hey guys I heard we needed another person to start a "my thoughts on the game" thread!

I was kind of surprised about how frequently the starting offense used the same 2x2 shotgun with a TE in the slot formation. They weren't game-planning this game, so it wasn't that, and I'd tend to think they'd want to practice more diverse things.

A decent amount of misfiring on offense nonetheless. Dropped passes, missed throws, blown run plays. Matt Moore isolated didn't look bad.

What I think I like the most about Ryan Tannehill's successes was that what he was doing was not extraordinary in terms of yardage or drama, he was making routine throws look very good.

The running game sans Bush was awful, ending up with 6 yards from 9 carries, and even then half of Bush's carries on the night went for negative yards.

Jorvorskie Lane looks like he improved a bit as a blocker from Texas A&M. He had a miss, but he had a nice lead block, and then had a special teams block as a wedge guy on one of Matthews returns where he kept his feet moving and took him 10+ yards.

Not much you can say about the starting wide receivers without dwelling too much on Chad Johnson's drop.

Roberto Wallace and Julius Pruitt moved pretty quickly to try and bury the other bottom of roster rookies. The fact that Pruitt plays in ST coverage units might almost be a nail in the coffin for Fuller/Cunningham/Matthews.

I was surprised about how little Charles Clay played with the starters, and when the Dolphins did go to 2-TE in the 1st unit, it was Jeron Mastrud who came on the field. Also a little bit interesting was Anthony Fasano lining up at fullback and throwing a pretty legitimate block on Reggie Bush's big draw play.

I was happy to see Charles Clay productive, but what I was happy to see was him being effective after the catch. That's going to be important with some of the fullback stuff he will be doing.

The offense line was hit or miss the entire night. Run blocking was not particularly good for any unit, and Jonathan Martin looked awkward. He didn't play well, but he wasn't awful, it just looked ugly and awkward.

The defense ended up being what it seemed like it would be schematically from camp. Mostly over/under fronts.

It was interesting they did very little in the way of substitutions on defense, and what they did do was almost by entire unit. Our starting defense played as a package, the only substitutes were either Soliai or Misi for Vontae Davis/Richard Marshall. Hated seeing Jared Odrick as a Nickel edge rusher with Paul Soliai as a DT, but it was only one snap.

That trend continued with the back-ups, too, they substituted entire front-7's out at a time later in a game mid-series.

I'm not sure what you'd call it, but Koa Misi and Jason Trusinik's position looks like it's going to be an interesting one. They were in my mind the stars of the defense last night, and the mix of traditional 4-3 and 3-4 duties seems to fit their skillsets.

Koa Misi also appears to be your starting Nickel DE again over Westerman/Vernon, which I like. Well, I'd like an overall stronger option, but I think Misi was reasonably good at it as a rookie and it didn't make a lot of sense to bench him last year in that regard.

Ryan Baker also played well and made a case for his continued existance. I think he had two tips at the line and stop.

Starting cornerbacks both gave up bad plays, but I think people are piling on a little bit. The deep Underwood interception was not indicative of everything horrible our defensive backs have ever done or whatever. Both Smith and Wilson were in good position and didn't make the play on the ball. It's hard to draw to many conclusions on that one.

    What the hell, Dan Carpenter?

The starters moved the ball a heck of a lot better than I thought they would. Theirs.

Looks like the roll-out with Clay dragging across will be a staple of the offense.
Charles gets across the field in such a hurry that I see it being a consistently positive clutch play for us IMO.

Also, gotta love Tannehill's playaction ability! Intrigued to see how that plays out with Gates on the field with him.

    Good observations.

I agree Smith and Davis are getting too much flak. Everyone knows Sean isn't a physical tackler and Mike Williams is a tough guy to bring down 1 on 1 anyway. I thought SS to a poor angle, giving Williams to much room to work back to the inside. He should've taken aim at the inside shoulder and used the sideline as a help defender. In any case, it was a heavy blitz and TB had a good play call (max protect) against it. We outnumbered them 5-2 in the secondary but Clemons, Dansby and Guyton were all in the middle of the field and effectively out of the play. I'm not gonna ***** about a missed tackle (or much of anything) in a preseason opener. On the post route SS was in trail technique and IMO the FS should have had an easy breakup/INT, would've been nice if SS had made the play but he had safety help and he was still in position.

I don't have a problem with Vontae on the play he was "beaten". The Bucs had 1 WR to his side and VD had safety help. As soon as the back to that side stayed in to block, the S (Jones) should have been sliding over to double the WR. VD overplayed the short route and was fooled on the double move, but with S help I would prefer he be more aggressive in that spot anyway. IMO Jones was late getting over and took a poor angle as well, VD actually recovered in time to make the tackle.

But whatever, its preseason week 1 so we're basically talking about a scrimmage.

    Just finished the game..

I thought Matt Moore played pretty good, showed command of the offense, threw the ball with confidence, not always perfectly accurate, but I don't mind giving him the first 6 games of the season to get us to 4 and 2, anything less, it's RTs time.

I thought Ryan Tannehill played good for his rookie debut, ( better than the three other rookies)no sacks, no untimely timeouts because of confusion, tucked the ball when the play wasn't there instead of forcing it, showed very good rhythm when he had time, and good accuracy..Kid should of had two Tds.

Kia Misi looks nice and active, with A quicker skillset.

I thought Wallace and Pruitt cemented their spots, especially Wallace, he made some hand catches that were nice, considering the velocity of the ball, and the patterns.

Chad is demonstrating the perfect example of someone who needs to learn to play his best, before he opens his mouth..He's a lighter version of his old self, so he might be making some adjustments to his game on the fly so maybe his mind is messin with him a bit..The quickness on the route was good, and he was complaining that he didn't see the ball to whoever would listen..

I thought Bj flashed in his limited reps, while he may have small hands, they are strong ones..

Our 7 th rounder Randall played a nice game, rewinded on him a couple of times, being very strong taking on the block, moving down the Los, and making the play on the back with one hand behind the Los.

Olivier Vernon hits people hard, moves people with his hands..strong *** mother grabber..

I agree with Dpate that Misi and Trunsik were the highlights defensively..

    Shelby made a few plays.

I didn't see Westerman flash for 4 days of camp, still haven't.

Eyes are always on SS..not gonna roast him, just would like him to know that there is more to playing corner than getting beat in coverage, you actually have to tackle and not be afraid of contact when you play on that side of the ball..If your not gonna be great at coverage than you better step up your game in other areas..I expect him to rebound, that hard work he has been doing in practice should at least improve his play.

Josh samuda played well, he's smart and in control of his line calls, seems to move and anchor well..and what I like about him most, he's intense.

Isaako Aaitui made an excellent play, pulled off a Swim move on the center and exploded to the qb, made him rush his throw inc.

Jon Martin struggled in pass protection, had some balance issues, some mental mistakes, he looked like a 2nd round picks first game..

Looks like we got ourselves a qb competition now..Tannehill does what an offense needs from the QB, threatens every inch of the field with arm strength and accuracy.

Yes indeed. I thought Vernon, Shelby and Randall all played well. Actually the 2nd D looked good as a whole. Good news depth wise.

Misi looked OK in coverage, which is a sigh of relief for me. I still want to see him chasing plays down from the back side like a WLB should. Gotta figure he'll be unblocked on lots of run plays given the talent we have in front 7. Wake was out of position on a few runs, the starting D was a bit lackluster overall, but IMO if your spot in the lineup is cemented then your #1 job in the preseason is to stay healthy.

Looking forward to seeing the WRs more though, I think that's the only position that is top to bottom still up in the air.

There was one playfake in particular by Tannehill during one of his drives that was such a thing of beauty. It was a big time play.

Anyone else disappointed with the lack or QB pressure from the 1st teamers?

Well, and with this defensive backfield, that's going to have to change at some point.
