Tough situation. I think they made the right call for the long haul (though it's not a cut and dried call every time). And, we really don't know what else had gone on behind closed doors with CJ (Or, how reliable the staff thought he would be; this may have just been the straw that broke the camel's back - a pretty significant straw, of course).

The reality is, with the lack of talent at WR (even with CJ), the team will not have a great record, imo, and will need to continue to build. They may not like Philbin right now (players are always more lenient with one another than management is). But, I remember when Belichick first went to the Pats - he was struggling to get players to buy into his ways or have confidence in him - and his personality has never been the greatest - and then, they just did and it clicked (he went 5-11 their 1st season - which is about where I think Miami will be after this year; even with the SB win BB was 25-23 after 3 seasons in NE).

The key will be a good core of players who play fundamentally sound at their positions who buy into the coach's system - and a good coach who has a good system. We haven't really had much of either - really since Shula, imo. If Philbin has a sound system and we get fundamentally sound players, it will work.

Hopefully Dansby wouldn't bump into Saban's moving-van on his way out the door. lol.

He certainly will make for a larger distraction in the near-term. However, over the course of the season, I think it eliminates a very large distraction.

It's common sense that when a player says he disagrees about a certain player being cut, it means that full on disrespect is coming in the future?

I don't call that common sense at all. And yes I think the onus is on you to prove this "slippery slope" theory of yours.

I need to go listen to the interview, since I'm taking such a strong stance on this. Context is really important. Which channel is Rosenberg on now?

The quote you have there definitely shows another side.

Let's hope that Philbins stops having private conversations in public that should be held in private.

Bill Belichick is not a great people person. But he also relies heavily on the leaders of the team to be the voice.

That, imo, is the way it should be. Joe is the coach, he needs to be the coach. He doesn't need to be their friends. He needs to get them to buy into the system, have leaders step up, and hopefully it moves from there in the right direction.

I'm not necessarily sure that a disconnect is a bad thing in this context. Its the coach's job to make tough, unpopular decisions. The players aren't responsible for that.

Lol. Because I have an opinion doesn't make it a 'theory' that needs proving. I am quite content to know what I know without converting the world with studies. What You're saying is like me declaring "Chris, prove your 'theory' that actions like Philbin's result in employees feeling there has been a message and new standard. Prove it empirically. The onus is on you because it is your theory." Seriously? My guess is, you are a grown man who has seen that when someone creates a consequence for an action, the other guys understand that there are consquences for those sorts of actions. I doubt you have a scientific or sociological study you referenced before you said that "Theory" in this discussion. It's just a common sense opinion man.

Now, it looks like the interview has more to it, and I may have judged Dansby's actions without hearing everything from him, including the context Rosenberg got him to talk in. So on that front, I definitely have to rexamine my position after listening to it. Wish I'd known it was available.

There must be a line, though, between how unpopular decisions are and still respecting the coaches decisions. That's all.

dansby needs to shut his mouth. its one thing for us fans to disaggree but for a team mate to disaggree with one of the head coaches decision is never a good sign. if i was philbin i would put dansby in with the 2nd string in the next pre season game just to see if he learns to shut up

Yea that will teach him. Will also teach your team something about priorities. Let's not play our LBs together when what we really should be doing is getting used to playing together in the new scheme, no, let's make sure he knows we don't answer questions here with the Miami Dolphins.

What BK is saying I believe is even though he might be saying things like this, it doesn't mean thats how he truly feels, and that bitterness can bleed into others, and affect focus, and the passion for his colors.?

I don't pretend to know the answer but I don't think Bks concerns are unreasonable..

For me I hope Philbin does not allow this conversation to be public, he must be on the same page with his leader, and it's up to Philbin to connect to him on that level imo

The difference is that while I have asserted that the theory that Joe Philbin just successfully sent a message to the team is MY PERSONAL OPINION, you clearly stated that Karlos Dansby's public disagreement leading into a slippery slope of disrespect is "common sense".

That's the difference. So yes, I think if you're going to assert that it's "common sense" then you should be able to cite at least one situation where something this mundane snowballed into full blown revolt.

So, having heard the interview... it's still not great that Karlos said what he did on the air instead of in house BUT he DID say that the organization probably had more information than him. He said that TWICE

He also said he doesn't get paid/it's not his job to make these decisions.

So, overall, not as big a deal as the media... and I... made it out to be. lol.

    -sigh- don't believe the hype!

context is everything. this is not a big deal at all IMO. there's some validity to Dansby's comments, but overall, you can tell by the interview that I just saw with Philbin on NFL network that Chad's overall routine and performance were not enough to overcome this.

lol. Sure. Let's look at the first few times under Cam and Beck that players started to question the coaches calls. Many argued that it was just players being 'frustrated' but others of us argued that beginning to question the coaching could be fractitious to the team and locker-room. Cam did not, to our public knowldege, snuff that out in it's early days. Once the losing compunded, we end up with guys like Porter openly dissing him in a meeting. Disrespect grows if left unchecked. It encourages bolder action when there is no consequence, or a consequence that makes for greater feelings of enmity.

Now, the variable in all this is winning and losing. When teams are winning, it can make a lot of this stuff disappear or at least hide it. A winning Dolphins team probably doesn;t have any issue with it, but a losing team could and would.

The difference between Cam and Philbin is 1) This is a better team talentwise, so we'll likely win more (we better!) and thus there is less chance of it snowballing. and 2) Cam did NOT seem to lay down consequences that demanded respect, whereas Philbin draws the line immediately and responds to it. You might even say Philbin also has the sense that these things can;t be left to gradually worsen.

Do you think he immediately pulled Dansby aside to talk to him because these things DON'T progress and it couldn;t lead anywhere? No, of course now. You have to nip these things in the bud or it becomes a very slippery slope.

We just see it different. That's fine. Let's move on.

Anyway, as I said from the start, I don't mind that Dansby stuck up in defense of a popular locker room personality...that's part of his role as a leader of the locker room.

But at the same time, I'm glad the locker room is upset because if they weren't upset it wouldn't have been a learning experience. I expect this was a learning experience, and whether they like it or not they did take note of it.

My only remaining beef is that he'd have been better off talking to Philbin in house than Sid on the radio, but it's a minor beef given that Karlos acknowledged his place in the hierarchy.

I'm curious how this team will shake it's mental and emotional funk over the next couple days. They need a 'moment'. SOmone else suggested bowling. lol. Not sure that's it.

I don't recall any of the instances you're referring to under Cam. To my recollection the first instance of insubordination under Cam Cameron was a FinHeaven poster who claimed he was at the Halloween party that Channing Crowder and Ronnie Brown and all the players go to every year, and that both Jason Taylor and Zach Thomas were talking major sh-t about Cameron and how they don't have any respect for him. I don't even know that you can call that an incident though, since it was word of mouth posted on a message board. The first REAL incident of insubordination was when Joey Porter publicly stood up in front of all the players and ripped Cam Cameron a new one for being 'gutless' and whatnot. And that's not a slippery slope, that was an avalanche.

I don't recall any instances of players publicly questioning Cameron or the other coaches, prior to that. So I don't see that in any way as fitting in your slippery slope theory.

I think Philbin did the right thing. You're assuming he pulled Dansby aside to tell Dansby not to go on record with the media like that disagreeing with their decisions. I very much doubt Joe Philbin told Dansby anything of the sort. I think Philbin had a discussion with Dansby because he was made aware that one of the leaders on his team personally disagreed with their decision on Chad Johnson and so wanted to explain his thought process. That's it. Communication is important.

Perhaps the issue is that guys in the locker room WILL stand behind their teammates even if they assault women and get arrested for DUI and SOMEONE has to be the voice of reason.

the team also takes note of whether its ok to question authority when they themselves have no authority in this matter. its never ok to publicly disaggree with the leader of any team. and its never ok to do nothing about it if u are the leader being publically questioned. if philbin does or says nothing things will get worse and more people than dansby will do the same. next thing u know we will be similar to the new york jets.

I could dig for the old post-practice interviews where I saw what I considered the first 'warning signs' but I don't have time and don't think they are on the site anymore. Anyways, Philbin is NOT Cam Cam and it wouldn;t go that way regardless. I kind of feel like this thread is becoming irrelevant now.

We're actually agreeing on the bold part, but in different ways. I agree with the content of the discussion (though I sure he told Karlos 'let's have these discussions in house'), but to me that communication is necessary to make sure everyone is on the same page and there are no issues. That's all we want out of this... to have the team move on from Chad being cut. And for us to move on from it too.

u can asks for links all you want, but i have an att go phone. its my only way to get online and its impossible to post a link with this phone. if dansby aggrees with philbins decicion he can speak about it all he wants to publicly. if he doesnt aggree he should say no comment or say nothing at all. any public disaggreeing with your leader is equal to questioning authority.

How do you measure that? Is it the amount of dog barks per team address, ala Ray Lewis or what? Or is it some sort of composite metric weighing say, players experience, your analysis of how well he plays, how "blue collar" he appears, etc?

I'm really curious how someone not on the team comes to these kind of conclusions.

A few quotes talking about how much they like Dom Capers doesn't constitute questioning Cam's hiring. If that's the case then I guess Nick Saban's tenure went down in flames because of a slippery slope of constant disrespect by the players who felt emboldened by their own ability to go on record saying they though Jim Bates should have been given more of a shot. But that didn't materialize.

And who DOESN'T question the Draft? Players included. Incidentally I don't recall that at all.

    CK, you'll like this.

They ask Rashad today if the players got a message out of Philbin's decision. Rashad says yeah, it did give the guys a different outlook on how they should carry themselves. Message received.
    http://www.miamidolphins.com/media/videos/Reshad-Jones-Media-Availability/355cd2ae-2a19-4e2b-8c7c-f9c14c05f1ed

Also asked if it's a distraction. Rashad says Yes it is. Also says it's troubling that he was released and shocking but he leaves that stuff up to the coaches, he's just a player (said that twice).

See that's what I'm thinking. The team just learned something about what is and is not going to be OK.

Nobody is questioning their authority to do this. Dansby stated several times they probably have more information than we do and he also echoed Reshad's statement that it's not their place to make those decisions.
