True, valuable opportunity to let the players know exactly how/what he expects of them handling their business. However, I go back to what I wasn't happy with in how Philbin handled things with Chad and Karlos. Players see Hard Knocks. You don't think they could feel the awkwardness in the difficult situations Philbin was forced to have to figure out a way to handle as a rookie coach? I think they would. I think a good percentage of them would look at what he said to Chad Johnson in that "scolding" and feel the same I did, the same way a PLURALITY of television viewers felt, that Philbin wasn't clear and came off non-confrontational. And now Karlos Dansby is going to hear that Joe Philbin told the press that he would prefer Karlos to keep those criticisms in-house. What do you think Karlos is going to think to himself when he hears that, IF Joe Philbin hasn't said that to him (which is what Karlos said after practice)? I know what he's thinking. He's thinking that seems contradictory. Karlos should've approached Philbin about his personal opinion on how things should be handled, rather than the media, yet Philbin is put in the same situation disapproving of how Karlos handled things, and he went to the media instead of directly to Karlos as well.

And all of that is just collateral damage from having to deal with a very difficult situation. I'm not saying Joe Philbin needed to be perfect. But it's sort of like a player, not putting a player on the field to handle things he's not prepared to handle yet. Rookie Head Coach and you've not only bitten off (what most consider to be) more than you can chew with Hard Knocks, you're going to be handed Chad Johnson on top of that? **** man. What are you thinking?

Really hard to know how Ireland-Ross-Philbin lined up re: Chad Johnson.

I mean, it's entirely possible Treland brought CJ's name up and Philbin told Ireland, "Sure, sign him! I won't have a problem handling him!"

But then you think about that for a second and realize, this is a rookie Head Coach who was just hired by this man, is there a chance he doesn;t want to admit he is concerned he *can't* handle Chad? Would I want my new boss to know I was unsure I could handle a challenging employee? Could that make them think I was doubting my ability?

So maybe Philbin was truly on board, or maybe he didn't want to say "No." If it is the latter, I guarantee he has learned his lesson and will speak out next time. If it's the former then... what the **** was he thinking?

    lol.

exactly, players could essentially disagree with Philbin's actions while simultaneously respecting him for them.... and perhaps respecting him more than they had prior to the incident. I'm sure there are some who are glad that Philbin doesn't treat individual players above the team, no matter how talented they are.

Basically, "whether you're on the bubble or a great talent, your actions have consequences".
Doesn't matter if you're Brandon Marshall, Chad Johnson, or if this had instead happened to Marlon Moore [who would've been cut in a heartbeat and no one would've complained about it]. IMO this type of consistency pays respect to the entire roster and might encourage guys in the bottom half of it to work that much harder b/c they know coach & GM don't play favorites, as well as helping to ensure proven vets don't become complacent, no?

To me it doesn't matter. Jeff Ireland's lines of authority are pretty clear. A player doesn't get signed unless he say he gets signed. Joe Philbin would welcome the challenge, but he's supposed to be up for any challenge, sort of like how a player would never say no to increased playing time and would be enthused about it, whether he was ready or not. It's Jeff Ireland that has to step back and have the wisdom and foresight to say I'm sorry but I don't think this is a good idea. Wouldn't you think?

I'd normally say yes, but I'd also think that a first year head coach and GM probably communicate even more than usual about who to get. I mean, it's about initiating t team identity and roster which, in some ways, only the new head coach really understands fully... and making sure they both get in sync.

Assuming they thought similarly and communicated a lot about how to lay the right foundation for this new era, I'd expect Ireland to not 'protect' the head coach out of something he shows any enthusiasm for or interest in having. Like I said, we just don;t know where the initial or main impetus came from for Chad, and that's a bigger question for me.

If Ireland brings CJ up becaue he's an option, and Philbin is all for it... then that's a lot on Philbin too.

If Ireland 'pitches' CJ to Philbin and Philbin agrees, that's on Ireland.

    No way to know.

I do know that since CJ was cut by the Patriots already it mitigates any PR damage of us potentially cutting him. That has to cross Ireland's mind if he and Ross have spent ANY time discussing our organization's image. If we ditch him, then we're fools but the PAtriots weren't?

Oh goody. Another bad personnel move made under the watch of our head of personnel that we can't mark in his column of whiffs because "we just don't know". My favorite.

Well, regardless of what one thinks of the CJ disaster, Mr. Dansby needs to shut up and figure out a way to lead a defense that was blistered in the running and passing game.
