I tend to agree more with your first sentiment... If you don't have 'it' you don't have 'it'.

Demps strikes me as a track guy rather than a football player. He'd be great as a kick returner, but I doubt he'd make it as a back or WR. But similar things were said about Chris Johnson (I never watched him in college). I think he's worth a look, but I don't think he'd help us unless we have a spot for a return specialist.

DT is a 2nd string running back a la CJ Spiller, Joe McKnight, Stevan Ridley, if we're talking AFC East. I don't think there are many 2nd stringers in the league who are more talented/accomplished than what we have in DT. He's average as a runner, he can catch and he can block, already. We've yet to see what he can do when fully healthy which is about all we can say about Mikell Leshoure and Ryan Williams. He out rushed Mark Ingram as well, if you're counting.

The other argument is that he hasn't lived up to his draft status, which IMO is pretty ridiculous for a 2nd yr player. OK. But even so, that's a question to be directed at the personnel/scouting department, not the player.

I hate to sound like an apologist, I'm not a fan of DT and I never have been. But its hard not to come to a guy's defense given what's being said about him.

Who is "you"? If you want to blame Ireland for drafting him too early, be my guest. But I don't see how that is relevant in evaluating the player. It's not like he decided where he should be drafted on on his own.

I'm pretty sure he won a championship with the 2008 Florida Gators football team.

Anyone who thinks Jeff Demps is better than Chris Rainey is crazy. They didn't watch games and they didn't scout at all. Jeff Demps is a track guy playing football. Rainey was a football player that just happened to be small. Demps is not worth a roster spot at all. Period.

For anyone who thinks that he can be a returner on the team move a long from that too. Demps was not a good returner at Florida and won't be a good one on the nfl. Demps had a lot of injury issues as well.

Jeff Demps may have a better build and speed than Chris Rainey but the later has better tailback instincts and will have a better NFL career IMO.

He may be worth a look as a returner but it would have to be team that can afford a roster spot for a specialist.

It's not that they're really smart. It's that a bunch of other teams are fatally dumb.

I remember people saying that when they acquired Ocho Cinco and Haynesworth last year. I think we should see what Demps can do on the field before we declare the Pats geniuses.

There is only one of him to go around. He chose the Pats. Who knows how many teams made him offers just as good or even slightly better? Maybe Miami tried to get him too and he turned us down.
