Basically stealing Hiruma78's thunder, but here's a transcript of Philbin's press conference today:

    http://miamiherald.typepad.com/dolp...in-discusses-carolina-loss-upcoming-week.html

    A couple of interesting notes:

    On Davone Bess

    On injuries and defensive gameplanning

On why they're only running the ball about 20% of the time:

On focusing on evaluations over winning pre-season games:

I do like him as a head coach.

But then, I liked Saban. And Sparano.

Thankfully, Philbin handles himself far differently than those two...

The real questions are with the position coaches. Just how good are they? Particularily on the defensive side. Guys like Bowles are not around for first time in many years. That secondary is getting used to new personalities. I like Turner, but he comes from the college ranks. I am very interested in just how good the wr coach is. The qb coach and offensive coord. appear to be competent.

I have no hard feelings towards Tony S, thought he did okay. If he did not land on the Jest I'd wish him well.

As for Saban, and Cameron, uhm..how about no?

I got nothing against Tony, but he always seemed like the guy that knew he was in over his head and couldn't find a way out.
Saban is just a jerk. Cam is just Cam.

Satan can F*&^ himself like a corkscrew. I passionately hate that man and as an extention Alabama. I get that NFL wasnt for him and wouldnt blame him for leaving if he had a moticum of class in his body. If he would have said at the time. " Look guys I am the dolphins coach, thats my situation right now. If my agent has been approached by anyone, we have a deal that nothing is brought to my attention until my current season is done. After this season I will evaluate where I am at and what I am doing. Right now I am the Dolphins coach." We all know Wayne had to beg and overpay to get him. he didnt like the NFL so be it, but dont be a classles smuck and lie.

Cameron was too philosophical, I like him as an offensive mind but he isnt tough enough.

Sparano I liked alot but think he got caught playing a tuna puppet and an Ireland puppet. He didnt have time to be his own man, to run his own program, by teh time Parcells was done, the mistake was keeping him because by openly pursuing Harbaugh you cut him off at the knees. so while Sparano was maybe too tough and too loud, I wonder how much had to do with him trying too hard to show he was in control? Just a thought

Philbin I like his demeanor, who said a coach doesnt have to grow into his position? sure dealing with Ocho he may have fidgeted a little, it was a national audience he was in front of doing a high profile release for the first time. But he made the decision, he didnt sway from his belief. He is candid, confident and steadfast. We will see if he gets it done, like him tho

I don't assume anything with our OL.

If everyone's healthy then I could see closer to 20. My fear is that Bush gets hurt and Tannehill is getting blitzed every play from then on.

We have so many asst coaches who have never coached in the NFL before. OL, WRs, Asst WRs, Asst QBs, DB. The asst OL and asst DB coaches have very little experience as well. 2 years apiece I believe.

-Guru coaches come here to ruin their reputations
-Guru position coaches come here to ruin their reputations
-Running the ball is always bad
-No Qb will ever live up to so and so
-Salute the 1972 team at all times
    -Stadium will be half empty
-If we do develop a player, we will lose them in FA, or trade them

Cam Wake as well, usually though they have one good yr, you can see the talent, then they vanish.

I'm hoping if Tannehill turns out great, that Bess becomes the next Wes Welker (only let's not trade this one please). Like to see close to or even above 100 catches a season (doubtful this season but 2013 look out, IF we get a couple other WR's on the outside with speed and decent hands).

Interesting how he was protecting/conforting Vernon&Martin: he had kind words for them (even criticizing RT for one of the sack)

    on Martin:
    on Vernon:

interesting, about his preference for developing young WR:

but he was also quite honest about our difficulties, calling out names (and the part about not being a huge stat guy make me laugh:yes:) :

Idk if he is gonna be a good football coach, honestly, but I found very enjoyable&interesting hearing his analysis (even in the jungle of "you know"
), he seems in control and knowing what he wants (but only the future will tell)

PS- do you know when we'll know about the first 15 cuts?

It isn't comfort as it is being truthful. If it is the play I think he is referring to yes, Tannehill should have stepped up in the pocket. Martin had pushed his man wide and had enough depth that if Tannehill did take a step up in the pocket, Johnson would have been behind him. Martin didn't stonewall Johnson by any means, but he did ride him up the field enough so that his QB wouldn't be hit. That is if the QB had stepped up.

Its not a big thing, but most people would automatically blame Martin, when the reality was he did a decent job, and that most times when tackles block a defender the same way it doesn't typically result in a sack. And if it does it means the DE never stopped hustling because his path to the QB was elongated or that the QB held the ball too long without stepping up or out of the pocket in time.

This play to me anyways, was in some part due to Olivier Vernon not staying at home - coming too far down the line of scrimmage and basically removing himself from the play. If Vernon is home, then Williams would have Vernon on his left shoulder and Clemons in the hole trying to make the tackle. It would have been harder if not impossible for Williams to bounce the play outside like he did if that was the case. Little things like this can result in what looks like sheer in ability to make a play, when in many ways its a matter of doing your job and staying in your gap.

And this is the kind of play that illustrates why Tannehill shouldn't start IMO. The play involved a seven-step drop, which is what Tannehill would be taking on a regular basis if and when this team gets behind big on the scoreboard by virtue of its weak defense.

Notice how the combination of Martin's rookie inability to keep the LDE at bay past the first hit on him, and Tannehill's mistake of not stepping up from a seven-step drop, were evident on the kind of play you'd run when a team needs to pass to come back from large deficit.

Those are the kinds of situations Tannehill (and Martin) needs to be kept out of until he develops further and adjusts to the game IMO. You essentially have two key players on offense (the QB and RT) who aren't yet ready to execute that kind of offense.

Not in Philbin's press conference, but I thought it was interesting someone asked Kevin Coyle about the potential of using Richard Marshall at free safety. IMO, Coyle looked stunned for a split second, then said that he feels better with Richard working on the outside.

After that Carolina game, I came away with Vontae Davis being the best Dolphins CB, at least that night. If not for lack of depth after Davis, Marshall, and Smith, at CB, I wonder if Marshall would indeed have been looked at as a FS.

I think it's pretty clear Philbin was trying to protect two young players whom they will be counting on a lot this season, but who clearly performed poorly in the game. They're young and have fragile psyches, yet we're expecting things from them, so he's got to circle the wagons for them right now.

Exactly. It's not like it's easy for a RT or pass rusher to make an immediate impact. Those guys usually take some time. Especially the pass rushers. With Martin you got to ride out the preseason and hope he shows improvement. If he doesn't...then you make the first game move. Vernon your going to play that guy and hope he flashes. He may only be a 4-5 sack guy his rookie year and that first one might not hit till 4-5 games in but you play it patient. It's pretty rare for a first year DE to rip up the league and we all know Vernon was raw to begin with.

If I've said it once I've said it a hundred times. The role they should have Olivier Vernon fighting for should be Jared Odrick's two roles. They should have Vernon competing to start at Left End on base downs, and/or to come on the field in the nickel package and pass rush exclusively over a Guard from the interior.

He's not an outside pass rusher and I don't know if he's ever going to be an outside pass rusher. He's so young that he may develop into one. But I'm certainly not out there to excuse his lack of pass rush prowess. I see plenty of rookies go out and actually look competent in pass rush right away. Olivier Vernon didn't go out there and look inconsistent with his pass rush or anything like that. He looked incompetent, and there's a difference.

I did not have him actually get an advantage in pass rush a single time. Not once. Not a single win. And again I'm not talking about pressures or hits or sacks, I'm talking purely mano y mano, Olivier Vernon versus the offensive tackle, give that guy more than he can handle and make him look uncomfortable. Didn't do it a single time. That would scare the piss out of me if I were the Dolphins' coaches and my big plan this season was to have Olivier Vernon come on the field on nickel downs to rush from right end while Cam Wake rushes from left end.

They're experimenting with Koa Misi as that down pass rusher on nickel downs. That's how bad it's gotten. Koa Misi. As the PASS RUSH SPECIALIST.

Jamaal Westerman is actually the most competent outside pass rusher on roster right now, outside Cameron Wake. Probably followed by Derrick Shelby or Jacquies Smith.

Once the reg season begins and we run the ball on a more regular basis, things will be a tad easier for Martin. No question Fasano will be lined up next to him more than anyone would like but its a necessity.

They are part of HIS long term players . We should all be aware of that , he is molding them from their pro beginnings. Some vets may not be around nearly as long , if they don't produce and buy in , imo.

I think Vernon makes this play on his own if Jordan Gross doesn't grab his facemask and pull him out of the lane. At the very least he stays home and your scenario plays out.

I understand your point, but Martin did alright with his protection. Johnson did well to get past Martin initially but the rook stayed with him and kept him at a depth where if Tannehill steps up even slightly, Johnson could slide right on by. There he did alright. But having a QB fail to step up happens a bit more than you might think. It happens, it just does. As long as it doesn't become a lingering problem then the issue will resolve itself.

Martin does need to work on his technique, but I think one of his bigger issues is lack of base strength. Neither deficiency is insurmountable by any means. Let the lumps come now, we aren't really going anywhere right now anyways, so just get it out of the way now.
