1-dimensional, previous TEs from same school struggled in NFL, and he had a down year from his JR year.

Deer in headlights is a gem. When you're getting chewed out it's really difficult not to shout back. You have to hold it in and do your best to look like it's not affecting you. These shows are edited in a way that they show an incident then edit the film to insert a look of how he looks lost. It adds drama.

His drops are concerning but I didn't think he had a problem at Missouri catching. He was very comfortable in Missouri's offense. His numbers dropped his senior year because Gabbert left. So yeah...i would seem like he needs a better QB to get him the ball with better placement etc. I can't remember him being a ball fighter though....he likes finesse type catches probably.

He's not adjusting well to the NFL yet. It's going to take some time for him to get used to the current offense. He gets open but he needs to focus better. He'll make the 53 and when it starts to click he'll get some playing time.

It almost sounds as though you're inferring a TE being drafted in the 3rd round is disappointing. ????
Apology in advance if I misunderstood.

The one problem I have with Egnew is this..why oh why can't we have a Rookie come in, and play above what anyone thought they could do from day 1?

How many times have we had this discussion?

The way Missouri uses their TEs they probably didn't want Egnew any bigger than currently is so to not interfere in the slightest with his role in the passing game.
With a year of NFL strength and conditioning, adding on 10 pounds, and a better understanding of the NFL game, Egnew stands a good chance to make an impact IMO.
There's no denying his natural talent & size, and he seems like he has some heart & fire to him. Lot of upside to this kid if he wants it bad enough.

No not at all. I was just curious as to what were his knocks from a scouting perspective, coming out of school.

Hard Knocks has had a terrible effect on fan attitudes towards certain players. They don't have any sense of context.

Fans are used to reacting a certain way when they hear a coach praise or criticize a player. For very good reason. Any time prior to Hard Knocks if you heard a coach criticizing or praising a player it was in a post game press conference. Under a guarded Sparano, these comments were carefully thought out.

Fans suddenly get hand selected fly on the wall moments, and they treat every comment they overhear as Gospel. As if something a TE coach yells on the sideline is equal to what Tony Sparano would calculatedly reveal in a press conference.

Hard Knocks is not journalism, they are not picking what they show to paint the truest picture. They do it ALL for dramatic effect, and to entertain.

Good analysis. Nice find. Really hope that our coaching staff has looked at this play in this manner as well. Im sure they have since this is the angle they usually view from, but it clearly does show this is on Devlin, and not Egnew in this instance.

IMO what hurt him a lot was being in a 2011 offense that ran the ball 200 more times than it passed after previously passing 51 more times in 2010. That and a 1st year starting sophomore QB contributed to 40 less receptions by Egnew. I didn't watch every game, but from what I saw and by looking at Egnew's yards per catch the past 2 years (9.2), it doesn't seem like he got a lot of work in the intermediate to deep range of the field.

I specifically remember him running combine drills and him popping out to me as a super athletic TE. I'm no scout, but the way he was moving wasn't slow or stiff by any means.

I think that's sure possible, but I think when you see coaches appear repeatedly exasperated with a player, it represents the kind of cumulative annoyance that crosses various contexts and allows you to see what's likely to be the big picture overall.

Kid looks entirely overwhelmed, mentally and emotionally.

But I think he has a chance of working past that to become a good layer... just not soon. I honestly don't think he starts to give us CONSISTENT play until November, and that's if he gets enough game action before then.

Before that I expect massive inconsistency from him.

I expect us to build his confidence. Give him a short pass about two yards up the field on a sort of "flat" route as he drags to the sideline. Let him make a few easy catches and get some yards after with his natural athleticism. Make him feel like "Hey I can do this NFL thing!"

    Has he?

Think about it, Garrard was with the #1's, it was not until he was injured that THill was then seen as doing well.

How many Jason Allen/Ted Ginn/Pat Turner/Pat White/John Jerry/John Martin "is not picking up the game well" threads have there been over the years?

    Dozens at least.

Tannehill was shining from his first day of practice, well before Garrard got hurt. I don’t think he would have beat out a healthy Garrard for the starting job… but that doesn’t mean he wasn’t playing well before Garrard got hurt.

Tannehill has played at a higher level than the expectation since day one. I thought the kid was going to need to be put in the oven at 350 for the season and just bake. But he looks far ahead of what most were projecting…

My biggest problem with Michael Egnew is not what he has done or hasn't done so far, it's that Charles Clay was already on the roster and is probably more likely to suceed than most/any draft picks.

But the context you don't have matters. You don't know how they are treating all the rookies. They seem to be equally exasperated with J Martin. And he is starting. You aren't getting a full beat all about Charles Clay, and seeing that Campbell has a completely different attitude towards him. So you really don't know whether the exasperation is genuine or just motivation

The show is for mass consumption. They aren't trying to make a show that feeds Dolphins fans inside info. People need to take everything with a grain of salt. Peter King comes into Dolphins camp and most fans would know to take his inside info as merely a snapshot of one day in a long camp. Peter King sees more in that one day than Hard Knocks has shown any of us.

Not so, Tannehill was struggling at first with the speed of the game.

In fact, we have yet to see him play against a real defense and what that speed is like, which is fine, just don't romanticize that stuff.

And he probably needed to go into the oven and bake, with a rebuild here there is no reason to bother with that, toss him out there and let him take the bullets even if it costs us games at first, that was the decision that was made imo.

You said "why oh why can't we have a Rookie come in, and play above what anyone thought they could do from day 1?"

Everyone thought Tannehill was going to struggle a lot, especially initially, and that he was raw and was going to need a lot of work... and he has definitely played at a higher level what most expected him to be playing at this stage.

I was at his first practice, and from the get go, he has looked better than expected...

There were reports of him struggling in Camps with the speed. Zero concern about it from his first practice on. This is one of the things that should have been super excited. Kid is progressing at a very high rate right now. I did not think he was going to be ready for a year or two myself. But its clear as day, hes ready, and hes our best option.

Like Egnew, you have to see him play and give him a chance before anything can be said one way or another.

Tannehill could be Aaron Rodgers, he could be Gabbert, until he actually plays neither one is true, the other guys who this has come up with, Allen/Ginn and co. were disappointments every yr, and at this time of yr it was all about "this is the year so and so turns the corner!!"

No, they never did, but at least they had a chance to play first.

If Tannehill doesn't count because we haven't seen him play against real NFL competition, then that is true for every rookie on our team. If its true for every rookie on our team, then you cannot say no one is exceeding expectations, because it would be impossible at this point to know one way or the other, based on your own qualifiers.

I understand your point of view. My question still remains, why are you talking about him then? If you can not take anything at all from anything he is done, why are you talking on here about Ryan Tannehill or like Fin D points out, any rookie at all?

You're trying to have it both ways. You can't complain you never hear Dolphin rookies praised as ahead of the curve then say praise doesn't matter because it is not the real thing.

Not really, what happens is the rookie being praised then goes out in the preseason and shows why they were praise worthy.

For example, the staff was thrilled with Martin, he played like doggie pooh, and they were surprised. Specifically Jim Turner said he thought he was on drugs watching how poorly Martin was playing, that is more of the norm then the exception in Miami.

A fine example of binary thinking FinD, why aren't they praised during practices then play well during games, is that such a high bar to meet?

Nope, for example it was crystal clear Cam Wake had both in 09, but who can that be said of since then?

One could watch Wake blow bye Tony Pashos on 3 consecutive plays, this along with JT and Porter saying he can play, since then no one really has had both, not even Pouncey as a Rook.

You keep redefining what the "real thing" is though. Is it the 2nd preseason game or the regular season? You seem to take the negative from preseason as real, but the positive as nothing because it is still just preseason.

Not at all, what is needed is actual praise from staff and vets, then seeing it for myself when they have opportunities to show it out on the field, preseason, regular season, it has to show up.

Egnew for his part, has never been praised by the staff, and has not had positive mentions very often during practices and is relatively quiet during preseason games.

I'd love to see him take a crossing route 60 yds to the house for example.

As for Tannehill, if one recalls Bush and a couple of other offensive players did say positive things about him however for me I've not seen anything rave worthy, as of yet, let's see how he does tonight.

Is Tannehill ahead of the curve? I did a poll at the beginning of preseason, and over 75% thought Tannehill would be 3rd string or behind Moore on opening day.

    He has exceeded expectations.

But now you take that for granted, and want "rave worthy!"

Look, because your definitions are at best fluid and at worst nebulous doesn't mean I'm under-thinking your stance.

Tannehill comes out in preseason games and blows people away (even playing near the level of Luck) but you say that doesn't count. Then you say that you want to see someone blow you away in preseason games. Forget binary thinking or even abstract thinking, that's just spin.

Disgus, I don't have a problem with it TBH.
I think Egnew was drafted to phase Fasano out eventually, making it independent of Clay's role as the Hback/#2 TE.

Michael Egnew is the 4th most productive rookie tight end of preseason right now with 43 receiving yards. The only guys more productive have been Evan Rodriguez of Chicago (49 yards), LaMark Brown of Atlanta (47 yards), and James Hanna of Dallas (46 yards). Of those, clearly LaMark Brown may have trouble even making his own team.

Egnew's production is ahead of Coby Fleener who has 38 receiving yards, ahead of Dwayne Allen who has 18 receiving yards, and ahead of Orson Charles who has 26 receiving yards.

Michael Egnew's 31 yard catch, which was a really impressive catch because it was off a tip while he was diving to the ground, is the biggest play any rookie tight end has made this preseason.

Stop ****ting on the guy because he has a placid, asian-looking face. He got yelled at in the Carolina game for a play that wasn't that bad at all, and he came back out there and responded.
