If you don't want to read any spoilers on The Dark Night, then stop right HERE:

If you want to read a bad-*** description of the opening 6 minute scene and get really juiced up for the movie then read on:

Our pals over at Warner Bros. called us up this morning with the best Christmas gift ever…an exclusive IMAX screening of the first six minutes of The Dark Knight. Director Christopher Nolan was on hand to present the clip to roughly one hundred New Yorkers on this frigid Monday evening.

Before the clip ran, Nolan stood before us, dramatically lit from behind by the glowing 80-foot IMAX screen. He shot several scenes using the IMAX camera; a first for a feature length film. These six minutes introduce Heath Ledger’s interpretation of The Joker to the world and Nolan’s intention was for this introduction to stand alone as a “short film.†Easily the best short film I’ve seen since Hardware Wars.

Click below and I’ll spoil the whole thing for you. If you would rather not know, know that it is badass. Forget Nicholson, “The Laughing Fish,†Caesar Romero, Mark Hamill and The Killing Joke. Heath Ledger’s Joker is THE definitive Joker.

A bank heist is really the only way to introduce the Clown Prince of Crime.

It starts off with a breathtaking shot of Gotham City in broad daylight. The camera swoops into this big glass skyscraper the way only an IMAX movie can. It was stunning. Then BOOM! One of the windows in this big glass skyscraper is blown out. It then cut to two thugs in ugly clown masks (the ones we saw in the first publicity stills that were released months ago) shooting a zip line down to an adjacent rooftop.

Cut to the street as we see another thug waiting on a street corner with his clown mask in his hand. We’re looking at him from behind and can’t see his face. A van pulls up and the thug puts on his mask and jumps in to join the rest of the clowns. The clown who’s driving is *****ing about how this Joker guy who planned the heist didn’t even bother to show up and questions why they should cut him in on any of the loot. There’s an awesome line from one of the clowns about The Joker and how he wears make-up as “war paint†to scare the crap out of people. Very cool stuff.

The two clowns in the skyscraper dramatically swing down to the rooftop while the clowns in the van enter the bank guns a blazing.

One of the rooftop clowns disables the silent alarm and comments that the alarm isn’t going to the cops. Once the alarm is halted, his partner shoots him dead.

    Cut to William Fichtner.

I was so amped to see Fichtner’s creepy mug. He’s the new Brion James. He’s in everything the way Brion was back in the 80s and he’s as badass as ever. Brilliant casting, Mr. Nolan. Fichtner is the bank manager and he looks pissed.

Then cut to two clowns cracking the safe. Once the one clown gets the safe door open, his partner shoots him dead. We start to see a pattern here. The remaining clown starts to fill the gym bags with cash.

As the clowns in the bank lobby control the crowd, Fichtner goes to work. The bank manager pulls out a shotgun and starts hunting clowns. It was unexpected and super-freakin-awesome. Crazy-*** Fichtner is enraged and ranting on about how these clowns have no idea who they are messing with. You learn that much like the rest of Gotham City this bank is corrupt and run by the mob. Nice twist. Of course the silent alarm doesn’t go to the cops.

Too bad Fichtner runs out of shells and the remaining clowns shoot his angry ***. He’s down, but not dead.

Then the clowns start to argue with each other. One clown asks the other, “So, I guess the Joker told you to shoot me once we had the money?â€

The other clown tells him, “No, I’m supposed to shoot the bus driver.â€

“Bus driver?†WHAM! A school bus crashes through the front of the bank, running over the first clown.

The back of the bus opens and the bus driver clown jumps out and helps load up the loot. Then bus driver clown gets capped. One clown left.

Fichtner bank manager then mutters something about there once being honor in the underworld of Gotham and this gets the clown’s attention. The clown shoves a grenade in Fichtner’s mouth with a string attached to the pin. The clown takes off his mask and we get an 80-foot IMAX Heath Ledger Joker face telling us “whatever doesn’t kill us makes us stranger.†It’s chill inducing. People are going to lose their minds.

The Joker jumps into the school bus, closes the back door on the string, and drives off. The pin on the grenade is pulled as the bus pulls away. Instead of an explosion, pink gas is released. The school bus pulls into the street and joins a convoy of school buses loaded with children. The Joker escapes into Gotham City.

We were then treated to a montage of Batman shots before the lights went up.

I yelled out, “Play it again!†but Mr. Nolan explained that it takes about thirty minutes to set the whole thing up again and we all shuffled out into the lobby for some ****tails.

Looks amazing and how can someone not love the laugh of the joker its great.

E: No one will ever rival Jack Nicholsons role as the joker though.

Ledger's a good Joker but Nicholson is the master. Can't wait to see it. Though I'm not too enthusiastic about Maggie Gyllenhaal. You'd think they'd try to get a hotter chick to replace Holmes. And that shot of Bale with the Batman suit in his penthouse suite (?) sorta brought up images from his work in American Psycho.

See I like ledgers joker much better much more evil and crazy. Nicholson was good but I didnt like how the role was played by him how ledger does his I think is the it should have been a man completely out of his mind.

Plus the original joker maker the guy who invisioned him helped with this movie so the joker is being played the way it was originally visioned in the comics where it wasn't with jack nicholson. The only thing is joker is suppose to have bleach face not makeup but oh well.

ledger has done a real great job with doing a much darker joker. he has a lot of pressure cause jack set a high standard for him to live up to as joker.

anyone see the first 6 minutes of the movie!? WOW...that shows you right there ledger is the man for this. sorry dont have a link, they took it down from the spot i saw it.

I like this Joker, he's more sinister than Nicholson's. Christian Bale is, without doubt, the best Batman to have ever played the role. I really wish that he would be in Justice League. Screw all that this universe/that universe crap.

I don't think people should try to compare Heath's Joker to Jack's. Both are extremely different but judging from the trailers, pictures and first hand info how Heath's work, people are going to forget about Nicholason's Joker rather fast.

I can't wait until this movie comes out, it looks sweet as hell already and that's even before we see Harvey Dent's story line.

Save me a seat man, I'm seriously thinking about going to the midnight showing and blowing off work the next day. This movie looks like it might be not only the best superhero movie but also one of the best action movies too. Add to the fact a great cast (especially Bale who's one of the best actors in Hollywood and Nolan one of the best directors) I think it's going to blow everything else out of the water.

And yes I'm one of the biggest Batman, Christian Bale and Chris Nolan homers around.

I loved Batman Begins and the trailer here looks really good. I don't think anyone will do Joker better than Jack, he nailed the Joker dead on. This one looks darker, not sure about the makeup, can't wait to see the movie though. The Batman Animated Series Joker was one of the best ever IMO, Mark Hamil's voicing was amazing in those cartoons. Bale is the best Batman ever IMHO.

I understand if you liked nicholsons joker more but hard to understand how nailed it dead on. When the actual joker creator the guy who made the joker and designed him knows his attitude helped with this movie and make heath ledger the joker. I mean yes heath may not be better we won't know till movie is out but from knowing the actual joker creator helped with ledger I would think he does a better job capturing the true joker.

Actually The Batman Animated Series and its subsequent iterations (AB&R, JL, JLU, Batman Beyond) are IMO, the definitive Batman, Joker, Cat Woman, Penguin, Bane, Scarecrow, etc., far and away. Especially Batman. In this particular universe, everyone fears him and takes orders from him, including Superman, and he's even the only guy man enough to bang Wonder Woman.

Nah, the Nicholson Joker is the comic version, the Joker was not this dark in the comics that I grew up reading. The gaudy clothes, the jokes, the gags, all of that is straight from the comics. Jack was the Joker, he nailed it without a doubt. I grew up reading batman. Don't get wrong, this version looks great, I'm really looking forward to it. Thats the great thing about Batman is that the character(s) in the comics are open to different artists styles, writers, etc. I think theres room for Ledger to do his own thing and that the movie will be great.

Well they had eye candy in Katie Holmes in Batman Begins and she brought nothing to the table (much like the girls in Fantasic 4, The Hulk, Ghost Rider etc etc). Gyllenhall is a much better actress than Katie Holmes so I don't mind down grading in the looks department to get a better performance.

looks like ledger to me. Thing is Nicholson belongs in the Burton universe, mind you I love tim burton, three of his movies are amongst my favorite ever (and I am really excited about Sweeney Todd). Thing is, Batman... well it is not really a Batman movie. At least not as Batman has been reinvented after Miller's and Loeb's cracks at the comic.

We are living a wonderful resurgence of the comic book form (i mean, everyone should give Brian Michael Bendis' Daredevil comics a shot, they are simply freakign awesome... the paperbacks are available under the Marvel Knights collections) and the resurgence is because the people that used to really read them are now adults. So the characters have gotten progresively darker. NIcholson was a fun Joker, a good joker, a good 60's joker which was what Burton was trying to recreate, a darker image of this 60's innocence.

I just think they are going to be really different. But I think I am going to like Ledger more than I liked Nicholson, because I like the more twisted joker.

Its a comic series, written by Brian Michael Bendis. It is about a world where super heroes are fairly common, but they are still human and have faults. It actually begins when someone starts knocking off superheroes and a couple of police partners assigned to superhero related matters are investigating it. Think a very adult Incredibles mixed with Law & Order Criminal Intent, drawn in a style inspired by the Batman Animated Series.

Oh I'd agree if I'm watching a porno but if I want to see a good movie I'd rather see a good acting actress over a good looking actress (unless you're watching a Charlize Theron or Angelia Jolie movie which is the best of both worlds). But disagree with you about how with looks you can overlook a bad performance. Have you ever been able to sit through a whole Jessica Alba, Jessica Simpson or Jessica Biel movie?
