The fact that Ireland and Philbin don't see eye to eye on some players is a good thing. Do we really want the GM and/or Coach simply to be a yes man to the other. Having a healthly debate on the pros and cons of a player while still respecting the other's opinion is IMO the best recipe for success.
I'm not sure that's true either. What is "average" in terms of free agent pick-ups? I haven't, and I'd go so far as to say most people here have not looked into that as far as they have the draft, but I'd be pretty shocked if the average free agent pick-up under-performed expectations.
Eric Winston. Initially I thought they didn't sing him because A) too much money wanted B) They were planning on making a splash elsewhere. I can't answer A. Not sure what the numbers were. But B never happened. That's where I got confused. We needed a RT desperately and it would've allowed us to go elsewhere at #42 overall in the draft (maybe WR)
Eric Winston has physical issues, though. He was released by the Texans because he failed a physical, and he signed pretty cheaply with the Chiefs seemingly in concession to Winston's physical issues.
Would've been nice for the Dolphins to sign him pretty cheaply and take a chance. Why Steinbach and not Winston? Winston was coming off a highly successful season. low risk, high reward type of move, IMO. Steinbach was more of a low risk, low reward move
I'm not sure anyone should have expected any of these guys to make much of an impact. These were low-level free agents brought in for competition. Richard Marshall was really the only one given any substantial money. Artis Hicks is really the only other guy that was expected to start, and I'm not sure in hindsight that is a move than warrants much criticism.
Debating the merits of value-added from free agency markets isn't the same as debating whether signing Tyrell Thomas to a minimum contract was a failure by management.
Because it wouldn't matter to you guys anyway. You'd just blast Ireland for trying to build through Free Agency. I wish there had been a sign just before the deep end warning you guys from going off it.
Get outta here man. Yes, I would've ripped Ireland for building through FA if he'd actually acquired a competent WR.
Again with the value stuff. Ireland is all about value. It's served him pretty well thus far, hasn't it? #VALUE
Yes, free agency has awful value. Winner's Curse has been discussed ad nauseum in relation to free agency.
Puhleaze. The second Marshall was traded, the same people who are predicting less than 5 wins are still making the same prediction. Its ridiculous. No cap room this year and Ireland sucks, **** ton of cap room next year and Ireland sucks. Vontae gets demoted and Irlenad sucks cause he wasted a first round pick on a guy who got pushed down the chart, trades the guy for solid value and he still sucks because he was the greatest CB we've had since Surtain.
Eric Winston was cheaper than his upside suggests, but you're still spending significant, starter-quality money over a 4-year deal for a guy who is a risk. Eric Steinbach was a one-year deal for a guy basically competing to be a back-up.
No one said you have to be the Redskins, but you can't ignore it as Ireland has done the last two years.
not trying to stir anything up here. But it's a risk I would've liked Jeff to have taken. Time will tell whether he should've taken that risk or not.
I don't know. It's not my favored way of doing things, but plenty of teams have been successful that way.
yet, Matt Moore. yet, Incognito. yet, Marshall (CB). yet, Wake. yet, Bess. Like i said, nothing that happens matters, you guys won't change your stance, you are zealots.
The question is, what will it take for you to change your stance? How many years of 7-9 and 6-10 will you be able to stomach before you realize that this team just doesn't have talent?
good job on Incognito, Bess, and Wake..... Marshall the jury is still out.... and this just in Matt Moore isn't good.....he isn't considered a positive move for Irish, at least not in my eyes... who else am I missing here?
lol and to further prove your zealotry you reinforce you have zero concept of what the other side is saying. I've said on more than one occasion, that Ireland didn't have the amount of time you say he did, because he had to follow Parcells blueprint. No one actually argues that, they just ignore it or say his title is GM. I've said you can gauge him on last year and this year because the data isn't tainted. I've said last year's draft is not looking so good at this point. I've felt we'll be...gasp....average. So what irrational crap do I need to change again?
The jury is out but he is starting. Moore is an excellent back up, which is what he was brought in to be, I don't know how you don't call that a success.
I'm sorry, I'll shed a tear for the guy who got paid Millions of dollars to be handcuffed by the "Parcells Blueprint." *Pours out Malt Liquor* This one's for you, Jeff.
How is Matt Moore not a positive. A good veteran back up QB? Who took over an 0-5 team and went 6-5 as the starter. Your going to throw all that away because of about 3 quarters of play with mostly back ups in preseason?
Cause that's my point...... I'm not saying feel sorry for anyone. I'm saying you're basing extreme hate on info you don't have. You are so purposely ravaged by your hate you think that's unreasonable.
who cares if he is starting....he could be another Vestee Jackson for all we know...somebody has to start, so yeah the jury is still out even though he is getting paid starter money... And Moore was supposed to be starting this year, he lost his job to a rookie who hasnt played a real down yet....but the truth is he lost his job when he lost Marshall, the guy who made him look better than he was...
Let's try this again. Marshall was startiung when Davis was here. Yes, the jury is out but he did win the job. You are implying that the saying, the jury is still out means its a negative pick up, when its a neutral one. Moore was picked up to be a back up. He was never supposed to start this year. That is just made up in your head. He competed for the job and lost, like a back up generally does.
Matt Moore isnt good, wont be the guy here, or ever will be....QB's who are good arent picked up right before training camp starts...QB's are a commodity IF any of them ever make it to free agency and are good, they are scooped up rather quickly after the free agent bell tolls.... People make so much about his record....go dig into the stats and tell me his record last year against teams with a .500 and above winning percentage...it may shock you...
I have my gripes with Jeff Ireland as much as the next guy, but how anyone can hold it against him for Eric Steinbach is beyond me. He brought him in a veteran, a guy Philbin knows, for a shot. It was pretty well chronicled on Hard Knocks and showed they were taking on a chance, with very high reward and very low risk. That risk being waiving Dennis. He retired. He wasn't healthy. End of story. He was brought in for depth with the hope of rediscovering something. It didn't happen.
I want to like Ireland, I really really do! For no other reason then I want to have some stability for this team, and see them build something special. But when you simply look at the facts, he is just not all that great at his job. It's not always as bad as it's been portrayed by some here, and elsewhere, but it's not good. Just too many bad draft picks, and this year's FA class, sheesh! But guys, we better hope he hit on this year's draft picks once the live bullets are flying, 'cause I gotta believe Ross is keeping him for at least another year, like it or not. He gets the rookie QB pass this year, and he'll be making the calls next April. You would think Ross would look at his FA record too, but apparently not. It is what it is, and we can only hope that somehow it gets better.
He won the job more of what Vontae didnt do to win it....to say Marshall is a better CB than Davis is foolish come on.... for the record I like the Davis trade as well.....Irish did well there finally...
There's no hate. His track record speaks for itself, as does the talent on this roster. A roster that's not in "re-building mode", according to the owner and GM. I'm not really for giving second and third chances to GM's. If that's your thing and you like mediocrity, cool.
Who was then going into this year lol? Absolutely it was his to lose, and he lost it.......THill?? Garrard?? nope it was Moore's job...stop it...
What scares me is this may be turning into a Matt Millen sort of thing. He just stays around to try and make up for his past mistakes, only to continually make things worse. Now, I think he hit on Tannehill, which MAY save his arse, but it sure would have been easier if Ross simply cut him off this past offseason and started completely new.
