Well we can't do that, because all Jeff Ireland does is draft players, and there are lots of folks here who could do just as good a job of that.
He also set a career high mark in carries today with 26. I think he has proved himself, as Deon says, PAY THE MAN.
But that's what I mean: THEY aren't using him as though they're concerned about his health or his workload, so when it comes time to pay him, they should sure realize that IMO.
Pay the Man now! Before he has a few more 100+ yard games with each 100 yard game i expect his price goes up by 500,000 ...tbh i feel the same way about Hartline as i do Bush. Pay that man too!
I'm actually not a fan of Hartline and today didn't change that. He was going up against guys who are dime corners at best....he should have won his matchups.
The main issue I have with Hartline is that he tends to not come back strongly enough to the ball. He'll either wait for it or very weakly come back. It didn't matter today and he did a little better job than usual but I don't know. I just don't have faith in him to ever be a threat on the outside. I'm not saying he sucks or we shouldn't resign him but I sure hope we upgrade next season.
I'm all for re-signing Bush for another 2-3 years if we can get roughly the same deal. 3 years $20 million with maybe $6 million in signing bonus as the max. Although I'm willing to wait to see what DT and LM do the rest of the season. If those 2 play well it may well be more prudent to let Reggie walk and take the compensatory pick. He might sign a deal that could get us a late 3rd the following year. But again......only that option if DT and LM step up and show they can play the rest of the season.
Reggie Bush has basically given everyone a huge "**** you" with his play the past year and a half. Most said he couldn't be a featured back, but man he's been terrific. Good for him and he deserves it all with how hard he works. What did we give up for him? A 5th? That's highway robbery.

A lot of us were mocking him last season after the 0-7 start.. Remember how he couldn't gain more than 3 yards a carry? Seems like a distant memory already.
Flip-side to that coin. If he doesn't re-sign him, he confirms that he is a incompetent goat-****ing son of a whore.
This point has been discussed already, but think it deserves a re-mention. Here is a guy busting his tail off, the consummate professional, and being a leader as described by Philbin himself - Bush is "leading by example". He stays late after every practice, gives his all in all aspects, physically, mentally, etc. He conducts himself very well for a high profile guy off the field as well. If we don't re-sign this guy, I think it sends a negative message to our locker room. Bush has done everything to deserve an extension from the Dolphins and if he doesn't get one, why would any other player on our roster give the Dolphins as much as Bush has? RB is a strength for this team? Fine. Trade DT and keep young Lamar Miller if you feel we have too much depth.
No, that's not how it works. If Reggie Bush wants too much money, or sucks the rest of the year, or doesn't stay healthy, or wants more money than he's worth, or any number of issues, there is good cause to not resign him.
I was most impressed by how he went about his business in the 4th quarter. There were a couple of occasions during the same drive where he gave the sideline a thumbs up. I think the coaches wanted to take him out but he insisted on staying in. I mean he almost stayed in that one entire drive where he was getting carry after carry. He was a friggin machine. He had that look on his face where he appeared to be testing himself, even pushing his own envelope just to prove that he could do it. I thought it was ironic that Bradshaw was knocked out of the game yesterday given how so many wanted us to sign him. And lets not even talk about Sproles. Ireland should absolutely get major credit for bringing him over for the limited value given up. I loved the trade then, defended it then, and I'm glad it's paid off.
Here's hoping he can give us a little hometown discount. How his relationship with the coaches progresses this year is going to be huge in that regard. He's only 27. I think he's got a good 2 to 3 years of prime left... maybe more.
too many if's. Every attempt must be made to re-sign him. If he signs elsewhere, then obviously, somebody saw value in signing him. Most teams keep their "keepers". All I ask is the same for our team, and that no excuses be made in the event that they don't.
No they don't. Every year there are good players that are allowed to go on the market, it really depends on the situation. Like could be applied to virtually every one of your posts, it's not that simple. Not if they have to tag Randy Starks or Jake Long.
Yes it is. It is that simple. You identify your signature players and you attempt to keep them. You don;t start listing all the reasons you won't. Like you did. The reason this sounds simple is because it is. You are paralyzing yourself by over-thinking this. No offense, you would make a terrible GM. I am not for being taken hostage, but I am for paying him commensurate with his production which would place him around 4th or 5th highest paid Back.
I would be pretty upset if they tagged Long or Starks over Bush....provided no deals are made on any of them...
I think people are being a little quick on the trigger here. It sounds like a lot of people here, if you had a choice, would pay the man tomorrow if you could. Reggie Bush had a fine day and is a fine play maker at tailback. However, this is his 7th year in the NFL, he has a history of nagging injuries, last year was the first one where he was really the main guy and even then he only averaged 14 carries a game. You have to remember that talent is not the main problem when it comes to resource allocation decisions in the tailback position. Durability is the biggest unknown. He hasn't really proven he can consistently handle this kind of load, and not many backs really can. He's in his 7th year. Don't be in a hurry to drop a lot of sunken, unrecoverable costs (i.e. signing bonus) into him, when in reality he could get hurt tomorrow and be out for half the year or the rest of the year. Don't fix something that isn't broken. Just enjoy the ride. Then if he makes it through the year and proves some more things to you on the durability front, you can begin smart negotiations for a smart deal. And you should always keep in mind that the franchise tag for that position is relatively cheap at only $7.7 million (2012). What would be so bad about keeping him one more year on the franchise tag? You'd have picked up his 26th, 27th and 28th years of age, his 6th, 7th and 8th years in the league, for an average of a little over $6 million per year. Then when it comes time to negotiate his price after the franchise year, he'll be 29 years old heading into his 9th season, and IF he's still not broken down yet, whatever contract he negotiates will have to assume it's coming, because 30 years old is that big age for tailbacks where they start going down hill. I also remember a time (think it was 2009) when Ronnie Brown was having great games and everyone was all about let's give him lots of money today, now, now now now, his contract is expiring this year. I cautioned the same thing back then that I'm cautioning now. Be patient. Let him play out the contract. Franchise him a year if necessary. What's the harm? You can franchise him and then revisit his contract when he's 29 years old and on the cusp of that dreaded 30 year age. Well, by 29 years old Ronnie was already pretty much done.
Good post....but I don;t think the Ronnie Brown thing is fair. The guy was headed for super stardom. He was Arian Foster before Arian Foster. Then He blew out his knee. Never regained that form.
