Ok here is my take on this and I have spent the last few hours trying to find information that validates my thinking.. I believe Davone Bess will make the team and be a high impact player for us this year here is a comparrison that will BLOW everyone mind. Eventhough Bess had a 4.69 40 yard dash which was slow he also was the ONLY reciever to catch all of the balls thrown to him in a 6 Quarterback shuttle.. Ok here is the stat regarding a slow 40 time and why I believe that it's irrevelant JERRY RICE Rice was selected in 1986 and he went to 13 probowls However many souts passed on him becasue of his speed (reportedly only 4.7 in the 40-yard dash)!!!! Yes we have a diamond in the rough! IMO:hi5
How many of these mini camp/ training camp wonders have we been through the last couple of years? Kerry Reed comes to mind. I like Bess, but Jayson Foster is the one I have my eyes on, 4.2 is nothing to sneeze at, with Tab Perry being cut (tough break for him btw) we may be looking at Kick Returners as well, and Bess doesn't have that extra gear that Foster has...
That is bad news about Perry. But I think this does open the door a little more for UDFAs like Bess and Foster. I just hope they really show their stuff in camp and can contribute next season.
I don't like it when people always bring up the Jerry Rice stat... Yeah he ran a 4.7 alot of WRs run horrible at the forty and don't do anything Rice does. I believe Bess will be solid for us just no where near an impact Rice made.
What separates Jerry Rice from everyone else is his ability to find holes in the defense and the little things to shake coverage. That's what many WR's outside of the elite ones lack.
And he ran like a running back after the catch, I wouldn't say he was fast, he was a powerful runner though, arm tackles would not do the job on him.
These days that's a bit harder to do and you'd have to be pretty strong, almost TE strength with the improvements over the years with the defense, especially the safety spots.
Bess and Babers.... Babers and Bess!!!! Cash and Tango... Tango and Cash!!! How shall we be stopped with these ultimate weapons on our side!? Seriously, though, Davone looks pretty good. We might be oversellling him juuuuuuust a smidge with the Hall of Fame, record breaking Jerry Rice comparison. Babers has to be good... because I want that name on my jersey SO badly!!!! Babers and Bess, Bess and Babers.... the old B&B
What separates Jerry Rice from most other receivers was Joe Montana, Roger Craig, later Steve Young, Bill Walsh, George Seifert, Randy Cross, Don Griffin, Charles Haley, Tom Rathman, John Taylor, Bill Romanowski, Dan Stubbs and the rest of the talent those teams had. I'm not taking away anything from his accomplishments, it's just that given the talent that was around him for his entire career at SF and coupled with his ability, he couldn't help but be great....
In other words, if we can find anyone who runs a 4.7, they're going to be the next Jerry Rice? I didn't know it was that easy. The NFL has been doing it wrong all these years.
Oh com'on, first off there is alot more to Bess's game, like his sharp routes and glue like hands and second no one is trying to saying he will become the second coming of Jerry Rice but that Rice proved you don't need good speed to be a great WR.
I like Bess a lot but lets not get carried away here, lets see what happens and if he makes the team i wish only the best for him
What I'm saying is that if I'm rooting for Bess to make the team and become our slot receiver, I'm going to talk about how great his hands are and how crisp his routes are and not how much his 40 time is compared to Jerry Rice.
