I want to give him points for trying. But addressing the need means actually doing something.

I think fans have to realize it isn't that easy. If it was every GM would have every player he wanted at every position.

You can't force a player to sign with you in free agency nor a team to trade you a stud WR without baggage.

C'mon now, magic wands exist. I'd get into it more, but me and Scarlett Johannsen are winning on every scratch off lottery ticket we play, as long as its after sex.

Not always. Marlon Moore was in the game on the TD pass play to Fasano. If they don't want to sign Gaffney, Crayton, et al, then I'd hope we use AA as the 3rd WR when we're in 3 wide, and if he's out like today, give Matthews some snaps. He cannot be worse than Naanee at presenting a viable target for Tanne.

The Skins saw a need on their roster for a veteran WR, and signed Josh Morgan and Pierre Garcon
The Chargers saw a similar need and signed Robert Meachem and Eddie Royal.
The 49ers saw a similar need and signed Randy Moss and Mario Manningham.
The Jags saw a need and signed Laurent Robinson.
The Dolphins we suppose saw a need too, and signed Naanee and Chad Johnson.

YMMV, all you folks in Dolphin Land, but from my own personal perspective, I see flaws in this picture.

Compared to Naanee, Ted Ginn is a 1st Team All Pro as a WR.

My issue is that who is to say any of those players wanted to sign here? None of them are long term answers either for the most part as a true #1

I don't see the big deal in missing out on those players.

Should we believe those are the only two WRs that he felt would upgrade our WR corps?

Do we need a true #1? I thought the design of our new offense was that it could be effective with a mix of 2s and 3s.
If you take that group of WRs, and rank them according to current ability, Naanee would be at the bottom. Chad would IMO be 2nd to last. He's become a moot point now anyway.
Can you honestly tell me you wouldn't have felt better about our WRs at the end of the off season, if Ireland had signed any other two out of that group, rather than Naanee and Chad? I can say with complete certainty that I would have.

I agree. I wasn't happy when he was traded for a 5th rounder. Though Carroll is turning out to be a decent player. Who's to say we couldn't have gotten him with one of our lower picks anyway? If you could replace Naanee with Ginn right now, our WRs would be better as a group too.

I never have and never will contend that any offense doesn't need play makers on the perimeter. A scheme may mask that deficiency well but no offense will ever be successful with a bunch of #3 guys. Not to say you need an elite receiver to be successful but you at the very least need a guy who can shoulder the load and make plays.

I would feel better about them sure, but I wouldn't consider the issue solved. And again who is to say any of them would have signed here anyway?

In my opinion people who say this offense doesn't need a #1 say that because they want to justify us not having it right now. I believe we can win without said receiver, but I definitely don't believe the offense will ever reach it's full potential without a #1 target.

I have been a fan for over 40 years. I do understand the issues, but probably not as well as Jeff or the front office. I also understand that bad decisions can become habits, with one bad decision affecting future decisions. I don't want Ireland to go out and just sign a "stud". I want him to seriously address the position. That means finding a skilled, competent, generally well grounded player. Baggage seems to come with the territory. The position Miami is in right now with receivers goes deep (no pun there),and is a reflections of a multitude of errors in judgement.

And by the way, as much as it hurts to say it, I don't blame a lot of players for not wanting to sign in Miami right now. But I have hope it will get better. And the actions of the front office may be the primary reason guys don't want to sign along with the obvious (they want to win and Miami wants guys that want to win, but those guys don't believe in Miami winning)

It was not about not needing #1 talent at WR. It was about how there isn't a design scheme to always throw X receiver the ball. For example, last year our passing game consisted of throwing BMarsh the ball as much as possible. In Philbin's offense there isn't a designated #1, it changes based on the game and who they are playing. BMarsh was too "throw me the damn ball" for him to work here.

That's all the "not needing a #1 WR" was about. People on both sides of the argument misunderstood it.

So, you're satisfied with the effort made to replace Marshall with at least reasonable and proven talent at that position? How many of those other UFA WRs from this past off season did the team even bring in for an interview? I suppose you could say maybe Ireland did bring some of them in, but since through the media we hear of so many players who do come to meet with the team during free agency, it's hard to believe that if any of those other WRs were brought in, it was done so secretively. I suppose you could buy into the theory espoused here in the past that most free agents aren't interested in signing with Miami, so the team is left to grovel for table scraps much of the time.
I seem to recall there being interest in Laurent Robinson, but after he met with the Jags before he was to come to Miami, they signed him without letting him get out of the building.

I never said the team would be successful with just a bunch of #3 guys. I said it was mentioned, or so I seem to recall, that this offense does not have a true #1 WR, and the design is for the ball to be distributed more evenly. Who's to say guys who had been #2s at best elsewhere could not be playmakers to some degree?

Bottom line for me is, the effort made to replace Marshall was unacceptable. Granted, there aren't many WRs of his talent level in the league, and none other than Vincent Jackson were available as free agents, and Tampa with their huge cap space paid a premium for him. There were several though who would have upgraded the remaining group of WRs, and if Naanee and Johnson were the best that Ireland could do in free agency, as well as not making the position a priority on draft day, then that's a pretty pathetic effort on his part.

Well, I am glad that at least you never misunderstood the argument.
Be that as it may, Ireland traded Marshall and his effort to bolster the position with some degree of proven talent after the trade was pathetic.

Well Mr. Clean my opinion is that you can't fix everything in one offseason. With our cap space next year we should be able to do something in regards to signing a play maker. If not we we have quite a few draft selections to either trade or acquire our own guy.

As I said in another thread watch for Bowe. He's hinted at wanting to play here and it seems he won't be going back to KC. I think they may even trade him near the deadline if they continue to lose. I know mid--season trades are rare, but the entire reason they have kept him is that they thought they had legitimate playoff aspirations. Having started 0-2 those are fading slowly and they may decide to get value for Bowe while they can.

I guess my point is that if we do nothing this coming offseason I will be pissed, but Im not now because I actually like our core of talent.

I'd agree with that, but when you create a hole by trading away one of your best players, it seems logical to me to at least try to fill that hole with a more significant effort than signing Naanee and Johnson.
I find it hard to believe that none of Manningham, Lloyd, Garcon, Meachem, et al, would have signed with Miami had Ireland made a reasonable effort to do so.

The facts are we have Egnew inactive (a relatively high draft pick) and we drafted receivers in the 6th and 7th rounds. The 7th rounder may be a diamond in the rough. Then Miami signs Naanee and I won't go into that signing in that all of you know what I think about that. Chad was showing some promise, but we really don't know how much because that train derailed before it got started. Then your gm comes out on television and says he has a bunch of 4s,5s, and 6s. Is that supposed to be a defense from future criticism or a realistic view of the situation (for which I do appreciate his honesty)?
Now I realize no drafted receiver is likely to make a huge difference, especially if drafted after the 2nd round. But as Mr. Clean has pointed out, you have to believe Miami had some reasonable shot at some of the guys he mentioned (e.g, Manningham etc al.). Hey, Braylon Edwards has more skill, but is probably not a Philbin guy. How many games does Naanee have to perform in before his contributions are evident. 5, 8, the whole season? I don't know. What I do know is he has not been there the first two games.

Here is Dolphins offensive coordinator Mike Sherman's explanation of Legedu Naanee's disappearance.

"He wasn't targeted many times. Coverages dictates that because he's on one side and not another," Sherman said. "We have guys that work real hard and these are the guys we've got. They are going to help us win football games. We're excited about the guys we've got."

Ireland brought Edwards in for a meeting, as we saw on Hard Knocks, at the same time as Steinbach. We signed the latter instead, who proved to be washed up. Edwards signs with Seattle, and was able to make the roster on a team with a deeper more talented receivers corps, IMO. If we passed on Edwards because of a current ability concern, it appears to be a bad call by Ireland. If we passed on him because he isn't a Philbin type of player, well IMO, if a guy can play and keeps his nose clean off the field, a coach needs to be flexible when it comes to melding the various personalities that make up the roster. If it was a concern about having such a strong alpha personality type in the lineup with a rookie QB, well, it sure doesn't seem to be a problem with Russell Wilson. IMO, to suggest that Edwards wouldn't have made for a better top 3 with Bess and Hartline, than Naanee does, would be crazy talk.

I'm disappointed in both Naanee and Chad Johnson, but the others you listed off aren't exactly setting the world on fire:

Josh Morgan: 6 Catches, 71 Yards. Cost his team a chance at OT yesterday.
Pierre Garcon: 4 Catches, 109 Yards, 1 TD. Outside of an 88 yard TD, he's done nothing.
Robert Meachem: 2 Catches, 49 Yards.
Eddie Royal: 4 Catches, 22 Yards.
Randy Moss: 5 Catches, 61 Yards, 1 TD.
Mario Manningham: 7 Catches, 57 Yards.
Laurent Robinson: 8 Catches, 115 Yards.
Braylon Edwards: 5 Catches, 43 Yards.

Several on this list have a long history with dropped passes (Meachem, Edwards). Others are known to "play when they want to play." A few (Robinson, Garcon) are moving over from systems where they excelled as a third WR into more of feature role, and those are always a risk.

Out of all these the most consistent has been Robinson, who is on pace for 64 catches and around 920 yards. That's good production, but it's not worth what the Jaguars are paying for it (6 years, 32.5 million). We got that same level of production from Brian Hartline yesterday, and at a fraction of the cost. I'm not sure I would want anyone from your list on the team at this point, and that includes both Johnson and Nanee.

A coach does not have to be flexible when it comes to what he wants. If it was determined Braylon wasn't the type of player Philbin wanted, then it was the right call. Again, I think the old concept of wanting any player that produces is no longer the way the Dolphins are going to do things. That's good, that's change.

I was looking more at their entire body of work rather than just 2 weeks. Regardless of what any of them have done with their new teams in two games, I can't see how anyone wouldn't rather have any other WR from that group than Naanee.

I had no delusions of grandeur this year. I think we'd be an 8-8 with or without.....Mario Manningham/Braylon/Whoever the hell at WR.

I'm much more interested in things being done the correct way finally.

We've been flipped over and banged for so long we think its a problem when they don't balance their beer on our *** while we're getting reamed. I am perfectly fine with cementing the power structure of a GM then coach, plus that coach being one I believe in for once plus grooming a the future at QB plus changing the relationship with the media. That's all I'm looking for this year and any wins we get are gravy. I don't understand why I'm in the minority either. All anyone does is ***** about how long its been. Well, the only way we are going to change that, is to change everything from the ground up and its going to take a bit. We've waited this long, waiting a little bit longer now that things are being done right, should be a ****ing pleasure at this point.

I swear people act like BMarsh & Davis were the greatest to ever play the game.

Naanee is likely to make it through the year if Sherman is defending him. But if he is catchless by say the mid point of the season, then I find it difficult to defend his roster spot.

However, Gates went through most of last year without a catch. However, I wouldn't put Naanee as a developmental prospect.
