I can't imagine too much either but I suppose the question is what do you REALLY gain in pass rush. I know what the PFF stats say but I'd be lying to you if I said I was able to isolate each of the 16 pass rush snaps he's had the first two games and analyze them to where I know he's rushing the passer competently. The PFF stats are impressive...4 QB Hurries on 16 tries.

I thought Dansby could've taken a better angle but Clemons was left out to dry by Carrol jumping inside and giving away the sideline.

And props to the OP for another great thread.

I think you're barking up the wrong tree in regards to Odrick.

The Dolphins typical 4-man rush in their base defense is the exact same 4-man rush that would frequently come in the 3-4 defense last year, and in a number of defenses around the league. They would most typically send Odrick/Soliai/Starks/Wake then, as they would now. Base defenses with a single real edge rusher aren't all that unique or regressive.

Sometimes Odrick is lined up in a wider position than he would be in a base 3-4, and he's not certainly not built like your typical edge rusher, but I don't see how it's problematic. Jared Odrick is probably not going to be most productive as a pass rusher wide of the tackle, but that positioning is going to be more conducive to productivity than lining up at a 5-technique with 2-gap responsibility.

You mean we won't see the genius of Cameron Wake covering Santonio Holmes this game?

Is this really a thing? Dropping Cameron Wake into coverage really isn't all that shocking or bad, and him covering Holmes was likely happenstance rather than design.

Don't you remember that play last season? Cameron Wake was actually LINED UP in man coverage on Santonio Holmes in a blitz package last season. Sanchez hit him on a drag across the field and he burned us for a TD.

It may not have been "designed" that way, but it was horrible coaching to even let that happen. Ever.

I'm about as big a fan of that as I am having Paul Soliai drop back over the middle trying to cover Andre Johnson on a drag route. Randy Starks MAYBE but Paul Soliai?!? Didn't produce an ounce of panic or confusion in Schaub. Just calmly and easily hit Andre for a nice gain.

The situation where I like that better is when the Raiders did it to us in the tight red zone...covering all 8 zones when they knew we were passing.

I'm not saying they should've assumed their teammates weren't going to do their jobs; I'm saying they should've witnessed their teammates' not doing their jobs and adjusted their play accordingly. If you see Koa Misi about to get blocked, you (Dansby) better hustle your *** over to the sideline and become the contain guy. Then Chris Clemons can make a tackle in the middle of the field instead of having to become a contain guy himself.

exactly. If Clemons takes the angle that a lot of people suggest and Carroll does his job, then Goodson has an easy cut back lane and most likely still scores.

I don't think the timing of the play happened in reality the way it's happening in your head. And by that I mean by the time you think Dansby should have recognized that Koa was going to be blocked, it was already too late for him to adjust his angle.

And the notion that Dansby was jogging, based on the film I saw from all the different angles, I thought was completely false.

What you have to understand is that Koa Misi was strafing at exactly the pace he should have been but he actually tightened down vertically to try and take on the offensive lineman in a strength match, aiming for an attempt to defeat the block and get free to the ball rather than outrunning the blocker to the perimeter and forcing the cutback.

There's no way Dansby recognizes that until it's too late.

I'm not saying Karlos is above criticism on the play. He should have recognized the screen earlier than he did. But the matter of him taking a wrong angle and all that noise...just not accurate, IMO.

The rush we're seeing right now is very different from last year. Soliai is coming from a one technique and a three technique for Starks.

The numbers speak for themselves on Jared Odrick.

He's playing defensive end and he's rushed the passer 64 times and come up with 0 sacks, 2 hits and 0 hurries. Rewind to last year, he was getting to the passer literally twice as often.

And you can't tell me that's some weird anomalous fluke if you actually watch the film and see him executing pass rush in quick sand over and over again.

He's never been able to move very quickly. It's his hands and explosiveness that have been his best weapon in rushing the passer. I don't see this lasting much longer, I think he'll be in the nickel rush soon where he produced six sacks last year. Randall will be the 4th guy. McDaniels traded for a large LE type defensive end.

No I don't, but I remember it being discussed strangely. That is questionable, but it's possible its also the bad outcome of a reasonable gamble, and the individual matchup was less harmful than taking a timeout giving the circumstances.

There are a lot of people who seem to think dropping Wake into coverage is a horrible decision on the face of it, and I assumed that is what you were going for- which is what I strenuously disagree with

"Teams that are executing better, could prove more of a challenge, as we saw against Houston. "

Yes but even given that 6 min before the half we held our own against that better Houston team. Take away that 6 min and it is a much closer game. We clearly can not give points to teams like them as we clearly can not make up that gap. We should beat the teams we should beat and lose to the better teams unlike the previous years that we simply could not beat anyone really. I can live with that as the team grows and develops.

Absolutely, but it's more conducive to pressure than less. Going more 1-gap with more aggressiveness and stunting aids rather than hinders the effectiveness of that rush.

We were moaning and *****ing for it for a long time. I couldn't stand Nolan for half of last year he just couldn't get it through his mind that with the exception of Langford none of these guys are made to two-gap.

If the Dolphins do decide to go with a 270lb end in Shelby as a starter, this will be a very similar line to 2002, except this time around instead of the ends creating pressure, the interior guys can as well with excellent depth all around.

I don't think you can take the 6 minutes away though. That's not a good way of looking at things. The defense still allowed them to score touchdowns. Offense turned the ball over. Take those 6 minutes away and our own offense still only scores 3 points.

Not an argument I would make.

Well no, the numbers suggest he's less effective as a pass rusher this year. Attributing it to playing a DE in four man fronts isnt a logical leap because he's no stranger to that, and he's less productive in that role than he was last year. I'm not even sure he's being asked to line up wide than he did last year, either- last year he was pretty commonly a Nickel RDE, and this year when he is a DE it's frequently at a more interior technique. There are other reasons why he isn't as productive

CK, I feel like you can really see Tannehill thinking out on the field on some plays. It seems like when you see him thinking or really reading the ball is just half a second late at times. I know this is to be expected as a rookie, but are you seeing that as well or is it just my imagination?? I also think he sometimes goes to the checkdown a little to quick when he could hold the ball and try and let one of the WR's get open and make a play or the defense to make a mistake. What do you think?

That's the point though I don't think his productivity came in that nickel last year. If I remember correctly he produced 4 sacks and it wasn't in that nickel pass rush role. He produced maybe 1-2 sacks off the edge.

I think the guy is literally waiting to take off but absolutely must be at the three tech.

I'm not sure. I was actually impressed with the speed of his reads and decision making. Particularly that TD to Fasano, MAN that was quick. Also quick his decision to run on the boot action. And come to think of it, his decision making process was very quick (in my mind) on the potential TD Hartline dropped.

I always pointed out before the Draft that his effectiveness near the goal line is particularly impressive due to his combination of physical gifts and decisiveness...and I think we're seeing that play out.

CK, wish I could give you two fist bumps, one for the writeup, one for the girl.

From reading your fine peice of work (the writeup), it gave me the impression that Clemons has the free safety roll and Jones the strong. There was a lot of talk about Coyle interchanging these position a lot. My question is, is that happening, or are Clemons and Jones mostly sticking to the free and strong safety rolls respectively?

I've really enjoyed these Finsnation All 22 articles you're doing.

I don't think they really have a FS/SS right now. Both guys are FS/SS and it's the same story with Nolan.

I wasn't trying to take them away but merely point out that if we execute as you have mentioned and not give the game away I think we can be in any game this year. Not saying we will win most of them but that we will be able to keep things close. Be able to truly be competitive and know we can win instead of hope.

That's all true, but my point is I don't think there's an argument he's being wasted. He didn't get any sacks as a 3-4 DE last year, got I believe 4 as a DT, and 2 as a Nickel DE. Putting aside the important nuance of pressures over just pure sacks, I don't think you can make an argument that Odrick was wasted as a 3-4 DE because he got no sacks. It's is a worthwhile pursuit, regardless.

I really don't know what the logic behind Odrick being hindered more now in the base defense than he was in the past is, either.

Depends on how you define it. Jones is spending way more time close to the line of scrimmage than Clemons. More than double as often.

This may sound weird, but if Burnett doesn't get better, Trunsik had a good camp, made some plays on backs in the flat, moved well, reacted quickly.

IMO what supports that argument is that the six minutes you're speaking of in Houston involved an extremely rare and improbable sequence of events. If it was six minutes of run-of-the-mill events that made the difference, this argument wouldn't have as much strength, if any.

But when you're basically saying we can be competitive with any team because the only time we haven't been competitive was when some freak series of events happened, that makes some sense, because that freak series of events is extremely unlikely to happen again.

Good write up CK. I got the coaches film too. It's great to see the whole field for the first time and see all the players.

Few things I noticed too. Tannehill can look off one wr and throw the other way. He's great at using his eyes and consistent as you said. I was impressed due to him only being a rookie. He is much further along than I expected.

I think other teams would expect the Dolphins to lean on Reggie so they are likely to stack the box with 8 or 9 defenders. In that case Philbin may try to counter that with a more spread offence

Safeties. Coyle would use either Jones or Clemons as the 4th LB half the time and other times they would both play a deep cover 2. He uses Jones more in the box as an aggressor.

CBs. Richard Marshall gives too much cushion on routes. He doesn't stick onto wrs hip pocket like Sean Smith does. Marshall lines up deep but keeps a generous cushion back pedalling while the wr runs a hitch. SS lets the wr come to him then breaks into the route. SS would leave himself more susceptible to double moves though so I'm wondering what intructions are given to the CBs.

I've been telling folks for a while now that Ryan Tannehill isn't the project he was made out to be by the experts prior to the draft. This guy is a natural quarterback who just has to get acclimated to the speed of the game.

Miami seems to be running some play actions and boots with him right now. What I hope they start doing is adding a little zone read option into the mix, and then packaging some plays like the inside zone/stick or the inside zone/bubble. There was one play in particular in the Raider game where they ran the inside zone, and Matt Shaugnessy came crashing hard down on the back. Ryan would have run all day long had he pulled that ball back and kept it.

I miss seeing Soliai dropping in coverage.

Odrick should suffice until we draft our edge rusher next year, move Odie inside.

Won't begrudge Reshad for playing it safe in first 3 1/2 quarters, he looks competent.

Still could be a complete mirage, due to the heat in the second half.

Execution already pretty good. Should only get better.

Oh ya no question as a 4-3 DE he's probably more likely to get sacks than as a 3-4 DE two-gapping. I never did understand one thing though, why is it that personnel managers and draft magazines don't have a damn clue when it comes to simple things predicting a player's success at particular techniques? I heard from who knows how many people Odrick would be a true 3-4 DE, I went and watched a little bit of him and I said three technique.

Next thing I hear Bush is a spread offense back. The vast majority of people in the football profession are really quite... well stupid.
