Nothing's changed since writing this: http://blogs.thescore.com/nfl/2012/...tannehill-doesnt-have-good-first-round-value/
Do you think those issues are a function of experience? If you do, what bothers me about that is that -- and I was thinking about this earlier today -- this team has a VERY inexperienced QBs coach. If you're drafting a guy who needs a ton of work, why wouldn't you make damn sure you got an experienced QBs coach?
Good read. If you don't think his problems are a function of experience, then why do you call him a long-term project player? I can definitely see the touch problems. Every throw is a laser.
Cheers. Because he still has room to develop with his mechanics. That doesn't necessarily mean, in my opine, that he'll be of high quality. Just my two cents. Could be way wrong.
Ah yes. I can see that. Also, it's amazing how often Tom Brady just stands back there flat-footed, almost totally motionless, when he has time to throw, and then the whole motion just unwinds from there.
Yeah, that sometimes becomes an issue for him though. When Brady has time, he gets flat footed, as you note, then gets lazy mechanically. He's done that more recently than in past years from what I can remember. Andrew Luck tends to do that as well; it was obvious at Stanford. Same with Robert Griffin III at Baylor. But with Brady, he has to have consistent mechanics because he doesn't necessarily have the extraordinary physical skills to overcome lack of proper form like, say, Aaron Rodgers does. Rodgers can throw without setting his feet and you wouldn't be able to tell the difference.
Quality. It's hard to say otherwise, really, because of what he's done. I know it looks simple and that's because it is; the Washington coaches have really done a great job of gameplanning to his strengths and incorporating stuff that he's truly comfortable with. I think they should receive more credit than they have been getting. Typically, the only commentary that the Shanahan's get is negative but thus far, it should be positive. Griffin's making the plays they have asked and need him to make. I know its early but I think its visible what kind of talent he is and why he was a no-brainer No. 2 pick. I think the same goes for Luck, whose stat line is not as pretty but he has more on his shoulders.
I never knew time as member of forum had anything to do with how much someone may post. Just think how he'd feel if he'd been here since 2007.
I didn't. I'm feeling a bit better. He does strike me so far as a bit sanchez esque. But that's probably more paranoia then reality.
I'm not so big on the retro-active "I told ya so" posts, but way to come in and rescue the OP from further embarrassment . Obviously, there are a lot of players who could've helped us out this season. There are also 31 other teams who covet good players/value as well, its not like any GM gets to have whoever he wants. My issue is that it's pretty obvious (to me) that Ireland decided to go the cheap route this season, with an eye towards stacking his chips for 2013 and he's done a good job of doing so IMO. If you think he should have gone all in to win big this season then fine, I'd think you were crazy, but that's besides the point. Point is, people are judging him as if he WAS going all in to win this year when clearly he is not. Pointing out the high-mid priced FAs, past their prime vets, has beens and never weres that he could've signed who would have "made this team better right now" isn't all that useful for a GM who's building for the future.
I think he's being taken care of a bit more then I care for. With the run game and all. I will say, however, I don't recall Sanchez audibling in his first year. So I take some comfort in that. His stat line at the moment also strikes me as comparable.
My concerns for Tannehill Predraft still exist, but I'm hopin. My problem is always comparing him to what RG, Russell Wilson and Weeden are doing, those are the guys I wanted before Tannehill.
I've never been a big Tanne fan but he has far exceeded my expectations. I didn't expect him to come in and compete for the start, he did. I didn't expect him to win the job, he did. He's only made one or two "wtf" are you doing throws, very important considering how well we run the ball and play defense. I like the arm talent, the athleticism, he needs to do a better job negotiating the pocket to extend plays and his accuracy could be better but overall he's been a pleasant surprise. Also, why are Lane, Thigpen, and Shelby not being included in the FA acquisitions list? Those are some pretty good bang for buck signings.
I see. You and others defend Jeff Ireland by shrugging off his failures and this teams lack of success in recent years, but I'M the one was getting embarrassed. Makes total sense.
I'm not sure that you do, or that you're even trying to. You framed the thread as an attack on Ireland's FA acquisitions and it's pretty clear that you didn't put much thought into it.
Overpaid FAs. I don't see anyone on that list at WR that would of been a good idea for us, save for Wayne and he didn't seem too interested in leaving Indy.
Looking at this year's WR list and comparing it to next year's group, there's no comparison. Wallace, Bowe, Jennings are all better options and we will also be better positioned to pursue them, cap wise. And with our draft position we'll be able to upgrade via that route as well. None of that helps this year's team but I think waiting was a good choice. Obviously having patience doesn't sit well with some of us...
I agree. I just have my doubts about Wallace getting out of PIT and Jennings with his injuries. I think Bowe's the guy right now.
Agreed. Jennings is pushing 30 and Wallace isn't a high volume guy. With our running game even a modest upgrade would pay off exponentially. I'm cautiously optimistic b/c we have a solid nucleus, we just need to put the finishing touches on this mofo. And because Brady will 35 soon.
I think he could be a somewhat high volume guy though. He can run way more routes than people give him credit for. Assuming Reggie Bush doesn't fall apart and Lamar Miller learns how to block we def have a solid nucleus. That and whatever happens at LT.
You think it was on purpose GM?.. I means it's not outlandish to think that Philbin wanted a year to assess?
I'm not disagreeing with you at all, really. It just seemed like everyone was getting up on the whole "nobody was available" kick and that's just weird to me because of course there were guys available in FA that could be helping the team. But you're right there was definitely a choice by Ireland not to get heavily involved. He went for a bunch of long shots and they all for the most part came up snake eyes. The one I want to criticize is the one signing that was more than just a long shot, that being Richard Marshall. But evidently there's some dispute as to whether he's doing poorly as a perimeter corner or not. I wouldn't have thought so but there you have it. I think he's struggling as a true corner and I thought he would've been a good signing as a safety. But now that they've kept him at corner suddenly it looks like they overpaid for a guy the Cardinals didn't want anymore. And when you think back to Marshall's admission that the Dolphins and Cardinals were his only offers and the Cardinals were offering much, much less...I've heard the phrase "the Dolphins outbid themselves" with respect to Marshall, and it kind of fits. I mean, I think we should be able to get beyond the side-taking and nitpicking and just admit that generally speaking, this appears to have been a negative free agency for the Dolphins. Shouldn't we? You took long shots and none of them panned out, and you took a guy with bigger money that is under performing? Shouldn't we be able to agree on that much even if we don't agree on the significance of it?
The question has to be how much better would the defense be if instead of re-signing Paul Soliai(2 year, $12 million) you sign a John Abraham (3 year, $18 million) and you play *Richard Marshall at his prime position at FS and have still have Vontae Davis holding down a CB. *Even though that might have been the plan all along but got scrapped with Vontae Davis' demise.
Most of it should go to guys that are already on this team. There will probably be a couple of mid-level signings along the same lines as Richard Marshall. Maybe we could see one high priced FA. But if anyone is expecting some type of free agency sining frenzy, they will likely be disappointed.
I would add Andy dalton to that list, one of the very few who wanted to draft him, so I put him in there in comparison as well.
Dont feel like thumbing through 10 plus pages but here is more info on artis hicks...he is filing a grievance http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2012/09/30/fight-looming-between-dolphins-artis-hicks/
