I was wondering about this. glad you confirmed it. Are we sure KC won't use the franchise tag again? what's the rules on that? can a franchise use the tag forever on the same player? surely not but I don't know and I've been wondering.

Whose going to trade a WR in the middle of the season? It's pretty rare (outside of us ditching Chris Chambers).

The smart thing to do would be to ditch Legadu, sign Jabar Gaffney and promote Matthews to #4 and get him in the game somehow. Give Tanny some deeper depth targets.

Free agency I'm looking at CB (Considering Marshall's contract and his play in Arizona..a move to FS might be best). Who knows if we can get Smith re-signed and the question is........do we? We might be able to get a better veteran corner for the same price. So I'd sign a vet or re-sign Smith.......and still sign a modest contract for a 2nd CB to compete with draft picks.

In the draft I'm taking a pass rusher in the first. Then I'm doubling down on WR's/TE's and CB's.

Agreed, but in the offseason. Why give up a 2 for a wr you can sign for just money in the offseason?

People thought the same about Vincent Jackson in the offseason? If it takes 5/55 for Bowe, like it did for Jackson, im in. We need a WR that badly.

Yes, we should have drafted the guy a few years ago but this could rectify that mistake. BUt they will probably keep him because Locker will need targets

Considering Kevin Boss, Jake Ballard, Bear Pascoe, and now Martellus Bennett have all been pulled off the scrap heap or late round picks, Id be inclined to agree with them. They invested nothing but some time and effort in to molding those guys and came up aces.

Nelson and cobb were 2's and Jennings was an early 3.

Apparently there are plenty of passes to go around. Each players stats can go down some without hurting chemistry. For the good of a team a player should embrase that.

Don't give away a #2, we just need someone good enough to put Nannee on the bench. He makes me miss Gates.

Yeah because the Giants and Packers are prime examples of where teams got impatient waiting for their guys to developed and had Madden-style free agency splurges.

Don't think I would do a 2. I would do a pick though to avoid a bidding war.

    ah...no...you talked about "resources".

Those two devoted them to that position. The Dolphins would need to sign both Bowe and Jennings to approach the amount of resources those two teams paid. If you want, add Atlanta as well. They actually splurged on picks for a compliment to their highly paid #1. That was after devoting FA dollars to a TE and HB.

Look at his numbers with Cassel throwing him the ball.

Then realize that Tannehill is better than Cassel.

You could argue that Plaxico Burress was an integral part of their 2007 Superbowl championship.

Meh. He is solid but not a stud. If we're going to make a splash for a FA they need to be stud material like Wallace.

I don't really think it's the numbers as much as what he can do that matters. Bowe is a big guy who does a good job of winning when the pass is contested. He does a great job of giving the QB a nice target. He's consistent in his routes, meaning that he doesn't let the DB knock him off his route or destroy his timing. I don't think he's great at getting separation though, good enough, but not great. IMO he's a nice #1, but not elite (top 5 type). I would have no problem with him here. The question is at what cost, in terms of dollars and what it would cost to get him here.

No, they wouldn't. This wouldn't have been all that hard for you to check, either.

Greg Jennings is in the end of a 4-year, 26.8 million dollar contract. Jordy Nelson is a 2nd round pick in his rookie contract, James Jones is in the middle of a 3-year, 9.4 million dollar contract, and Donald Driver is on a one-year, 2.3 million dollar contract. Randall Cobbs is a 2nd round pick in the middle of his contract.

Victor Cruz has one year left on a rookie UDFA contract for 540,000$. Hakeem Nicks has two years left on a rookie contract. Domenik Hixon is on a one-year, 615,000$ contract. Ramses Barden is at the tail end of his rookie contract as a 3rd round pick.

The free agents you're advocating would almost certainly cost more than all the wide receivers on both the Packers and Giants rosters put together. What the Dolphins should be doing if they want to emulate the Giants and Packers is draft a wide receiver or two in the the 2nd and 3rd rounds. Not spend like a drunken Madden player.

That's not really how Jerry Reese does things though, that was Ernie Accorsi. I also believe that Coughlin has earned a bit more personnel power than he had at that time.

Green Bay is not going to trade Jennings when they are making another Super Bowl push.

Bowe, maybe. Given Ireland's history of drafting in the second round (small sample size, I know), I would be in favor of a trade.

Haven't read the whole thread.. but my take on this is that we're now 1 and 3. If we are two games or worse below 500 within a week of the trading deadline (week 8 now), I don't think we're going to make a trade. And personally I don't think we should make a trade at that point. Because you're likely giving up a pick and being that far behind in the standings, you're likely NOT making the playoffs. At this point, the only reason you make a trade is to propel you into the playoffs.

On another note, it's fascinating how many wr's around the league have been hurt this year. Really worries me if we give up a good resource and we get the next David Boston.

And trust me... I want this offense to have another option besides Bess and Hartline at wide receiver...

I agree that a trade is unlikely and probably ill-advised given our record. I could see us pursuing a FA WR in the off-season Bowe or Wallace maybe) and then taking a guy in the 2nd or 3rd. I could also see us picking up a guy like Swope in the 5th round or so. He's not considered elite physically, but he was RT's favorite target last year and IMO is a good football player.

You're correct, Jerry Reese doesn't splurge in free agency. Instead, he gets immediate high-level production from his draft picks, many of whom are WRs.

That depends. What advertisements are we talking about?

Manningham, Barden and Jernigan - three WRs taken by Reese since becoming a GM - all were not factors in rookie year. Only Nicks was.

Dwayne Bowe's work ethic history is significant. To me, it is frightening to give this guy tens of millions of dollars and expect him to work hard every week, run every route 110% effort and do everything else with a great effort. I am aware of his talent level; he is an exceptional talent. He can run routes with any WR in the league; he has violent breaks; strong hands; can deal with press coverage; can run by defensive backs. He can do it all.

But he doesn't want to. Not on a consistent basis at least.
