thatms pretty amazing. Imagine how much we will improve once we draft a pass rushing DE and ball hawking S.
That INT stat is the one that jumps out at me the most. Not used to seeing that out of the dolphins, LOVE IT!
I cringed when I saw that. Actually, we recovered 1 of those 8 (just none from ones caused against the rush). Either way, it's still not bouncing our way. Didn't we have a couple that were taken away from us that shouldn't have?
Honestly do not know each fumble off hand, do know it is surprising the number of times we get the ball out and it does not go our way.
I'm fond of the 3rd down conversion rate at a tiny 26%, which is now tied with Houston after their game tonight. For comparison, Balt is 37%, Seattle 39%, NE 44%, Buffalo 48%, Jets 49%, and Oakland pulling up the rear with 53%.
Didn't last year at this time Miami have 1 or 2 interceptions? I remember it being really crappy. Plus the year before was 15 dropped interceptions or something crappy like that.
More or less: -3rd downs -turnovers -pts allowed -sacks Are my standard metrics, with tackle numbers in the secondary, especially with the cornerbacks. Hesitate to mention this, but our ST unit is regressing, first 2 games it was a strength, last 3 it seems like their is a blunder every game: -Jets..first down on a snap to Tebow out of the punt formation -Missed FG -AZ missed FG -Cinci..the turnover off of Jones' leg -missed FG ST needs to look in the mirror or it will cost us more than 2 games this season.
i think we were 1-12 in FR last year and this was a stat i thought thats impossible to do again....damn the ball just doesn´t bounce our way
Notable offensive stat aka the reason Gaffney will help our WRs. Miami wideouts are 55 for 891 yards. All but 4 catches and 31 yards are owned by White Ninja and Bess.
That is not quite the whole story as now they are using Bush as a sort of 3rd Wr. Agree on the whole, as much as I like Anthony Armstrong, fact is our #3 and #4 Wr's have given us nothing.
philbin gave some credit to Jones for disguising where he lined up and for Coyle in mixing coverages, twists and pressures on 3rd down.
Our defense has been playing well as of late, no doubt. I'm interested to see how we play against NE, who seems to have found a rushing attack against their aerial assault. That will be a true test.
I think our run defense can make them one dimensional again, although that dimension is still pretty scary. Although the Cincy game hurt our run defense numbers, giving up 80 yards or so, about half of those yards were on 2 non-conventional running plays -- a 12 yard scramble by Dalton and the 29 yard option run by Bernard Scott. There was some mis-tackling on the Scott option run and it counts, but its not really a "regular" running play. Although QB scrambles count as rushing yards, I don't think they really reflect on a run defense. Without those two plays the Bengals had just around 40 yards with a ypc of just over 2.
One of the Football Outsiders' tennants (right or wrong) is that fumble recovery is 100% luck. There is no skill involved because once a ball is fumbled, where it bounces is completely random. The fact that we've forced 8 and only recovered 1 is a statistical anomaly. It should even out over time. I'm beginning to really love this defense. Especially the front 7.
Even when it does bounce our way the refs don't care. Who knew that pinning the ball to your shoulder pad with your wrist after already fumbling was "possession"
I'm loving the execution on 3rd down, and disguising coverages with blitz looks... If we can clean up the problem with screens, NE is goin' down! But firstly, the universe will align with a W in Jests land.
Well, let's say we pull off a 9-7/10-6 season, unlike in 08 or 05, we have a Qb to build around instead of a scheme or running back. We won't have the same talent at Qb but a tougher schedule, which is what happened in 09 especially after Pennington went down.
I think our future is bright.
If anything we should have a better QB next season when you factor in progression from year to year. I agree with this post 100%
Front 7 is playing very well but I still wish we had a good compliment to Wake on the other side, like Ogunleye was to Taylor in their prime. Can you imagine if we had two outstanding outside rushers with the maulers we have on the inside?
I wonder what we'd look like verse passing teams with Jones as a S/LB hybrid whom we could move all around the field with Clemons going to SS and Marshall to FS (provided we hypothetically had better depth at corner to allow it).
I get what you're saying, but if we had a full time strong side DE replacing Odrick then we'd lose our ability to truly make offenses 1 dimensional. We'd still be good vs the run, but it wouldn't be in dominant fashion like it currently is. IMO it'd be better to find an extremely talented situational pass rusher who has the potential to develop into Wake's heir over the next few years considering many DEs take a few years to become impact players. By that time, an aging Wake can take over the situational pass rush role while his protege becomes the starter. Either you do it that way or do it via the OLB/hybrid approach where we can get a good run-stuffing/pass-rushing OLB who simply moves to DE in nickel. With the OLB/hybrid approach we always have the option of rushing 5 or blitzing him on 1st & 2nd down (which is essentially what Houston does with Reed & Barwin when they use them on a 5 man front), especially if we bolster our coverage with another solid corner.
The 3rd down statistic is particularly fantastic in my opinion. How many years have we been screaming "get off the damn field" about our defense? There is a reason "9 and out" was hoped for and a relief when it happened. We aren't getting bounces on fumbles, we have had ****ty luck in that regard for years. One day it will turn our way. I think our pass defense statistics are staggering. I look at our secondary and shudder. Kevin Coyle, who I continually question regarding his love of zones and his odd substitution patterns, is doing a damn good job in my opinion. All that said, we have been healthy (knock on wood). We are paper thin everywhere. That will wear this crew down eventually. If they can stay healthy, stop the run and keep getting off the field on 3rd down that will mitigate the lack of depth and keep the injuries to a minimum. We need another draft to shore up the depth and add to the secondary.
Well, they'll identify multiple but typically do an extraordinary job of isolating a single, significant weakness and exposing it schematically.
30 banger....don't worry, with this guys body, genes, quick twitch musculature, and progressive training style, he's good for another four years.
Can you take out Rob Gronkowski... to Mexico the night before the game and leave him in a ditch in the middle of the desert?
