I guess Kyle Skipworth went the way of Legadu Naanee.

I think he's a bust in terms of where he was drafted but he can still contribute in the big leagues IMO. He can be our Jarrod Saltalamacchia. He hits well vs righties.

    He's not close to Saltalanacchia.

He can maybe be a worse Brett Hayes with pop that plays exclusively against RHP.

A WORSE Brett Hayes? I don't agree with that. He's closer to a Saltalamacchia than Hayes, IMO.

How is he closer to Saltalamacchia? Skipworth currently holds a minor league batting line of .219/.282/.377/.660. Saltamacchia was a career .271/.366/.458/.823 hitter in the minors and was in the major leagues by age 22. Skipworth has just come off 2 straight disappointing seasons at Double A, after 3 disappointing ones in A ball. I think he'd kill to have a Brett Hayes career right now. Hayes minor league numbers are .255/.305/.376/.681 so numbers wise Skipworth is definitely closer to him than Saltalamacchia.

I'm assuming, and I apologize if I'm wrong, that you're looking at Saltalamacchia's major league stats and comparing them to Skipworth but that wouldn't be right. Projection wise Skipworth is probably at best is a back up catcher (depending on how good his defense is) but that might be wishful thinking right now. It's entirely fair to say that if Skipworth wasn't a former 1st rounder or a catcher he might have been released after this past season.

There's not a chance in hell he's Salty. He has a career .660! MiLB OPS and strikes out in a third of his at-bats in the freakin' minor leagues. How the heck is going to hit MLB pitching.

Yes, worse Brett Hayes, if he's lucky.

Salty is a platoon catcher than hits RHP well. Specifically for power. Skipworth is built the same way. He struggles vs lefties but against righties, he hits well. Especially last season in Double A. He had a .768 OPS against righties.

He has NOTHING in common with Hayes. That's a poor comparison.

Way too many pixels have been wasted on Saltalamacchia in this thread.

Because Saltalamacchia is a platoon catcher vs Righties. He hits for good power against them. That's similar to Skipworth. He's a power hitter vs Righties.

Again, Skip isn't going to be anything near Salty. Okay, they are both RH Platoon hitters with pop. One is a good hitter, and one strikes out in a third of his at bats and put up one acceptable one acceptable RHP split in a repeat of AA. The strikeouts are going to eat him alive.

Also, I'm not comparing skillsets of Hayes and Skip, I'm comparing them both as ****ty back up catchers.

One respectable RHP split is wrong. He showed the same ability to hit RHP before this level, too.

The K rate is worrisome. His career isn't over, though. He's 22. It is definitely something he has to work on. But again, the comparisons to Salty are there.

Ok because they're both catchers and hit RHPers better than LHPers yes they're similar, I guess. But I don't think Skipworth ever becomes "Saltalamacchia Lite" if he ever reaches the majors, nothing in his minor league numbers suggest that. So thinking Skipworth can be the Marlins version of Saltamacchia is probably going to leave you disappointed.

A split line of .242/.300/.468/.768 vs. RHP for a player repeating the same level in the minors is respectable or give you any hope he can be a major leaguer? Yes he's young but it doesn't look like he's made any improvements or adjustments since he's been drafted.

Again I think it's fair to suggest that if he wasn't a 1st round pick or a catcher he would have been released after the season.

I actually wonder if the Marlins will even bother putting Skipworth on their 40 man roster since he's eligible for the Rule 5 draft in December.

It's not just because they hit right handers better than left handers. It's because both have good power vs righties.

Never said he will be Salty. I said could be. The possibility is still there given his age. He has work to do but that is his best chance as a Major Leaguer to contribute.

I'll agree that it's probably his best and only way to contribute in the MLs.

Just goes to show you how hard baseball really is to play.

I wouldn't say hope. Just projection on what he can do at the next level based on his minor league numbers. Again, he has work to do but that's his best chance at the majors.

This was his first year above .750 for that split.

They are bad comparisons. We'll see I guess.

Where did you get that number?

Also, 2010 was his repeat year in Greensboro. When you account for park and league factors and adjust his numbers accordingly, it was just average power.

Its being reported that the Marlins payroll will be around 16 million after this trade. Loria will get much more then that from Revenue sharing. The guy can not sell a single ticket and make money.

Surprised he dares show his face in Florida

Well they totally robbed the city of Miami!

They should have done a big time renovation of the Orange Bowl like Chicago did with Soldier Field, moved the Dolphins back into it, and left the Marlins to fend for themselves in the giant cavern of Sun Life Stadium.

What the Marlins owner has done to baseball fans in south Florida is a disgrace. I don't know if I would even wish this stuff on Mets fans.
