Is this good enough to win the AL East?

    Buerhle, Johnson, Romero, Morrow, Happ

it's interesting. Hard to see a staff with better "stuff" than that one...

I think it is. The AL East is practically up for grabs as it is.

Funny that someone who watches games wanted to sign Juan Pierre. But whatever we have more important things to discuss, how in the world can we pull off that Rizzo trade?

Not sure. Johnson and Morrow are always health risks. Romeo is coming off a year in which he was one of the worst SPs in baseball and just had surgery to remove bone chips. Not sure how Buerhle's stuff will play in the AL East, especially in Toronto with an average fastball. And Happ isn't very good. There's just still a lot of IFs and question marks with the rotation. As far as simply raw "stuff" Johnson is an ace and Morrow is pretty good in his own right, who knows with Romeo but Buerhle's stuff just doesn't match up, his best asset is he's an innings eater and Happ is just a non-factor.

Like I said in another post somewhere on these boards, I think right now at the very best the Jays are the 3rd best team in the AL East. I still like the Yankees and Rays better and that's before factoring in any moves they make along with Boston and Baltimore.

I think Texas right now might have the best "stuff" in the AL right now though.

The Rays still play in the AL East.

Gotcha. I'd have to say the Rays. Price, Shields, Hellickson, Moore and Niemann are all still pretty good and AL East battle tested for numerous years already.

I think stuff-wise the Jays have a chance in the AL East. Were I betting, I probably wouldn't have them as the favorites, but they're in the mix.

I like their lineup though. We'll have to see how their bullpen shakes out.

Samphin he's in the running for the worst franchise owner ever. Serious on that.

He also is now p'offing his fellow owners as well. He just made it harder for Sternberg in Tampa to get a publically financed stadium, he also now will be collecting revenue sharing.

Before he didn't get the revenue from the stadium but he gets all of that now, and on top of that he's going to receive revenue sharing. So the next time you buy your Yankee, Dodger or Giants ticket, you'll be giving some to Loria

Donald Sterling is still probably worse.

Section can probably elaborate on that better than I can.

    Yes he is.

At least Loria has a ring, and actually spent money to try to win another one for a 3 year stint.

Donald Sterling is not only a loser, he is also a racist and a terrible human being.

Samson on Le Batard just tried to promote a possible free agent signing—I forget the player name—as "the great Cuban player signing of all time."

Yeah, this ownership actually thinks the fan base will turn out to see Hispanic players, not good players.

Okay, so I re-listened to the second half of Samson's segment with Le Batard.

First: screw you guys for making me listen to Samson again.

    Second:

Dan: "How active is the team going to be in free agency?"
Samson: "It depends. We just filled a bunch of holes on the team. [Skipping ahead slightly…] There's a shortstop being discussed, Hechavarria, who if he becomes a Marlin is one of the great Cuban signs of all time. A perennial All-Star."

So basically Samson is trying to tell us that we traded Jose Reyes for an even better shortstop, but is trying to sell us on the fact that he's Cuban because even Samson knows that the guy has only played FORTY ONE GAMES in MLB.

I think it's absolutely ridiculous we get nationalities thrown in our face to appease us. It's racism believe it or not in a fashion. I'm white and could not give a **** less what nationality a player on my team is. I don't like Brian Hartline because he's white for the Dolphins. I don't like Mike Miller for the Heat any extra.

If people are seriously rooting for someone or okay with losing because we have players that share a nationality they are racist along with being idiotic for being played like this.

Someone tried to pass it off on the political forum that i am on that people pull for people that "look like them".

Look at "Linsanity"... It didnt matter that this kid out of Harvard that no one gave a chance too the city by storm with his play its the fact that he did it in the NBA and *gasp* he is Asian!

    Frankly i dont get it.

The Mets just tried this experiment trying to sign ever latino player they could.... That didnt work out very well now did it. Fans want to come to see a winner they dont give a **** what color or what country a player comes from. It might make a better *story* but in the end production matters.

Not only that but his stat line in the minors is .272/.314/.381/.695 in 340 games. Yeah Samson must think Marlin fans don't have the internet at home.

This was the Dodgers main reason to trade for Adrian Gonzalez because there's a big Mexican population in So. Cal. It was also the Blue Jays reasoning to trade for Brett Lawrie (since he's Canadian) and their failed attempts to sign Jason Bay a few years ago. Numerous teams have tried this "strategy". Maybe it's just me but if the team is winning it doesn't matter what race, religion or gender is on the team. I really don't think at the end of the day stuff like that really matters when trying to draw fans to the ball park.

I thought we signed an international FA.

I actually like Hecchavaria. He's supposed to have a great glove, which is great. If you look at his Minor League Splits, he has a .823 OPS In Triple A. Past two seasons there he hit well. I think with his glove he could be an average SS even with a bad bat. If he hits, he's pretty good.

I'm not seeing a perennial All-Star in this. In fact, I feel dumber for having heard Samson claim that.

Even if he is a good SS the issue is....we already had one. It's not like we are spending the money elsewhere either.

It will be interesting to see where the Marlins rank in attendance this year. Last year, I remember seeing tickets on sale on Stub Hub for $0.05. Yes, FIVE CENTS. I wonder if they will go even lower this year.

He's alright. Certainly not an All Star type.

Color me unimpressed with an ~.800 OPS in the PCL. That's nothing to beat your chest about.

True but at least he showed something while there.

It's also worth nothing the average OPS of a SS for the past 3 seasons is .692. He'll hit below that but his defense will probably make him average. If he hits above that, which can happen, he'll be an above average SS. Sucks that we gave up a SS who crushes that line and can play good defense but whatever.

I think every team does super cheap pricing like that.

The attendance will bottom out, most likely. It'll be pretty embarrassing.

Regarding Hecchavaria scouts love his glove & arm, they rate it a 70 on the 20-80 scale, but don't like his bat. They don't think he will ever hit enough to be anything more than replacement level.

Funny how this front office keeps getting players who can't hit and then puts them in a pitchers' park.
