I'm not calling him great. I was just was echoing was said in the article by some Dolphin defensive players(s).
If the Dolphins finish 6-10 or worse this year. Attendance at home game and TV ratings will continue to decline next year, IF Ireland remains the teams GM. Going into this season, it was stated by many people on this forum that the problem wasn't that the team lacked talent. It was the coaching of Sparano which was the reason the Dolphins were a sub 500 team for the last three years. Now the Dolphins have a new coaching staff and they appear to be headed for their fourth consecutive sub 500 record in a row, against one of the easiest schedules in the entire NFL. So if it's not the coaching, it must be the lack of talent on the team. Guess who is responsible for this lack of talent? Ireland has got to go before this team can be expected to improve. I truly believe that only fans of other teams in the AFC East, and Ireland's relatives think he deserves to remain the Dolphins GM. I just don't see how any true Dolphin fan would want to see Ireland retained after this season. Because true Dolphin fans can clearly see that he is the real problem with the organization. He simply has no idea of how to build a playoff quality team. If you enjoy watching a mediocre team, year after year, Ireland is your man.
Now Jason La Canfora is reporting that Mike Sherman and Bill Polian have had a close relationship for a long time, that they lived close to one another or something like that. Explains why Bill Polian seems so pro-Tannehill (which would be a requirement IMO for Ross to consider hiring him in Miami) in those latest "off air" comments to Barry Jackson...to the point where Polian is lamenting that the Dolphins aren't protecting him with the OL or giving him any play makers in the receivers unit. Mike Sherman is an x factor in all this. He's held the big whistle at multiple levels, and even been the GM when he was the head coach at Green Bay. I feel like Joe Philbin is a little more copacetic than Sherman is likely to be. You're not going to expect a Joe Philbin to go behind Ireland's back and make inroads on a new GM. He's too focused on doing his best with a guy that is, essentially, his partner. Mike Sherman though, I could see him getting his hands dirty on Philbin's behalf.
Bill Polian is exactly what this fanbase deserves. A guy anyone who has paid the slightest bit of attention will know has done one of the worst jobs as a GM in recent memory, but will have popular appeal based on the name and "not Ireland". Regardless of the fact he's way worse than Ireland.
Forgive me if you regard this as a straw man, but there is no small amount of discrepency in on one hand regarding Bill Parcells as past his prime, but Bill Polian's history as in the tangible past.
If Polian does come here expect that 1st pick to be a WR and maybe two more in the draft. In an offensive minded league having a great offense that can score will hide the defense better than we can at this point.
Seriously, you might wanna take a brief look at his draft history. He drafted one wide receiver high in the last decade and they was not real good. He was real fond of drafting bad defensive backs and offensive linemen, though.
How is it a strawman? You did say Polian is a worse GM then Ireland which is the same as you saying that Ireland is a better GM then Polian. Comparing thier records is fair game.
If you want to replace Ireland, the worst thing you can do is hire someone based off their reputation.
He didn't need to take another first round WR with Harrison and Wayne on the team. He drafted Garcon in the middle rounds before Harrison left. I think it's funny that a GM that has been to multiple SB's is considered worse than a GM who wishes he could make multiple playoffs. Sent from my Samsung Epic 4G using Tapatalk.
He did build a great team in the worst place in buffalo.drafted great payers with excellent character..he also built multiple champioships in Canada, whipped together an expansion team into a Super Bowl team faster than anyone.. The concern for me is age..he's 70 years old, can the eyes catch subtle athletic movements that are important in evaluation, idk. If Philbin and Sherman want him, I'm not gonna argue.
His age is a concern to me. does he still have the energy and the focus to keep doing it, or was he pushed out of Indy because the organization could see that his skills were diminishing?
Ross is responsible for that rating as much as anyone else. His Stewardship of the team so far has been almost nothing but mistake after mistake for 4 years now. That number also reflects the changed market in Miami. Miami's ratings will always be lower than the rest of the country for a number of reasons that have been debated here ad nauseum.
Agreed. I'm not convinced I want Polian, (I think I'd like to hire a younger up-and-comer instead) but the Ireland boot-licking is hitting an all-time high in this thread.
It's pretty funny what happens when you actually sit down and look at what a GM has done instead of going by name recognition. PS- He drafted Anthony Gonzalez high, and he was terrible during that time period.
