It was totally playful. Smith was grinning after he said it, so he took it as playful anyway.

I absolutely LOVE this guy and I think with Ryan and Philbin we have a winning combo.

We just need the right person helping in the personnel decisions. If we get that person I think we could be in for a playoff run for a few years.

 

Exactly the way I see him too. Such an upgrade over the last two it's not even funny. Actually it's sad, because it's taken 6 years to get this guy.

I don't think it was anything more than playful.

Does seem to be finding his stride, at least to us. We haven't seen a lot of mic'd up tape of him before now.

 

The Philbin-Smith exchange was definitely playful. Check Philbin's expression just before the video moves on to the next segment.

 

Also remember that the Dolphins have made a very organized and concerted effort to front Sean Smith as their #1 corner since well before they traded Vontae Davis. They talk about him, they put his picture on tickets and other things, they have him doing charity stuff on camera, on Hard Knocks they openly talked in front of the cameras about how Sean Smith has re-made himself while Vontae hasn't, etc. They're making a concerted effort to stand behind this guy for a reason. It would make a lot of sense if Philbin views him as one of the 'inner circle' type players he's comfortable making jokes like that with, along with Tannehill.

 

Philbin is definitely deadpan, but Tannehill is such a good soldier he was basically assuming he was serious until told otherwise.

 

Tannehill feels boy scoutish. Hopefully he'll loosen up with time. Brady was the same way.
