Awesome.. Keep pilling on the picks. We are bound to hit on 2 or 3 that contribute immediately next year. Sprinkle in a few FA's and hopefully we will have something to play for week 17 next year.

The size of UFA contracts our former players sign elsewhere matters, but so does net gain/loss of system free agents. We were a -1 according to him. If that is right, it pretty much assures us of a pick.

I wonder though, why doesn't he figure Arizona receiving a comp pick, even a 6 or 7th rounder, for losing Marshall to us?

Playing time is part of the equation and Marshall only played 4 games.

Somewhat close to the draft. We're still at least a couple of months away from learning our compensatory picks, if any.

In the linked article, he says:
That would seem to pertain to Marshall too, since he got a 3 year deal. The delayed benefit part anyway. I left a comment for the guy who wrote it, asking the same question.

Could have something to do with the way contracts are structured. We can get out of Marshalls deal without much of a penalty this year. So essentially its a 1 year deal with 2 option years.

A 4th round compensatory pick would be awesome.

I generally expect to get screwed by the formulas one way or another. For example, I would expect the formulas to screw us by having Richard Marshall cancel out Kendall Langford, Artis Hicks to cancel out Chad Henne, and Legedu Naanee to cancel out Marvin Mitchell...something along those lines.

I will say this. I don't know that this particular blogger has a "great" record for predicting this stuff. It's decent. I know that AdamJT13 has the sterling rep in this regard, and this blogger is trying to re-create his work based on the rules that AdamJT13 posted, but there are clearly some things that this blogger doesn't understand about AdamJT13's process.

Just to give you an idea of how much disagreement there can be, this guy says Miami gets a 6th and a 7th.

The qualifying signings and losses would be the following, IMO:

    Projected Dolphins Signed qualifiers:
    Artis Hicks - (1 year, $2,000,000)
    Richard Marshall - (3 years, $16,000,000)

    Projected Dolphins Lost qualifiers:
    Chad Henne - (2 years, $6,750,000)
    Will Allen - (1 year, $1,000,000)
    Kendall Langford - (4 years, $24,000,000)

If what this CT guy says is true about signed plays canceling out guys with similar contracts or lower contracts, before higher contracts...then it would seem Richard Marshall would cancel out Chad Henne, Artis Hicks will cancel out Will Allen, and that would leave Kendall Langford uncanceled.

Can't trade a compensatory pick. We'd have to use our own.

It seemed to me that a few yeaars back we got screwed over after losing 5 or 6 players and we didnt get any picks but maybe i was wrong . wasn't it 07 or 08 that we lost some guys but we didnt gt any comp picks?

Right but what people forgot was that some of those loses were from released players who dont factor in the equation. Players who are released, RFA's who are untendered, dont factor in at all. The formula is players who entered the last year of their contracts and were not resigned by their original team vs players you signed via the same criteria (players in the same situation on other teams). Playing time, contract length and money given (particularly guaranteed money) are significant factors as well.

If we lose Jake Long for example and elect to not really utilize our cap space or strike out on all the big name FA's we would then be in line for a 3rd rounder next year. You'd probably get a 3rd or 4th rounder for Smith and Starks as well if we dont sign a CB (or anyone else for significant money). This is how teams like the Patriots have Stephen Gostkowski making 2.5M as their 4th highest paid player and still have a really good team. Not necessarily advocating that, just saying.

But of course if you've got a late 4th round compensatory pick sitting in your back pocket, suddenly your natural 4th or natural 5th round picks look easier to trade.

I would love a late 4th round pick but I would also like it if the other guy were correct about a 6th and 7th. I think this is a Draft where I would love to have a lot of 5th, 6th and 7th round picks to mop up guys that I have a lot more faith in than the rest of the market.

Who knows which players fall into that area of the Draft? If you're just going off Dane Brugler's stuff from NFL Draft Scout (which isn't nearly as reliable IMO as it used to be under Chad Reuter) then a LOT of favorites of mine will fall into the 6th to 7th rounds.

These include RB Ray Graham, RB Cierre Wood, RB Dennis Johnson, RB Kerwynn Williams, FB Kyle Juszczik, TE Justice Cunningham, TE Levine Toilolo, TE Joseph Fauria, TE Phil Lutzenkirchen, WR Denard Robinson, WR Aaron Mellette, WR Corey Fuller, WR Jasper Collins, WR Marquess Wilson, DE Cornelius Washington, DE Quanterus Smith, DE/LB Travis Johnson, LB Vince Williams, LB Tom Wort, LB Kenny Tate, LB Jake Knott, CB Terry Hawthorne, CB Brandon McGee, CB/S Sanders Commings, CB Travis Howard, CB Khalid Wooten, CB Kayvon Webster, CB Greg Reid, FS Josh Evans, FS Corey Broomfield, SS Shamarko Thomas, SS Earl Wolff and SS Duke Williams.

According to Brugler, all of them could/should fall at least to the 6th round. Which tells me I'd love to have 5 picks in the 6th and 7th rounds to snag some of these guys. Hell I feel like I could almost build a success 7-man Draft off those guys alone.

Agreed, plus having those extra picks become good players eases your cap situation for a year or two since their making peanuts by comparison. Opens up more options for you via the trade market or FA should one choose to spend some of that extra cap space.

Seriously just from the list I gave of guys that Brugler feels will be in the 6th or 7th rounds (or undrafted), if you give me:

    RB Dennis Johnson, Arkansas
    TE Joseph Fauria, UCLA
    TE Levine Toilolo, Stanford
    WR Marquess Wilson, Washington State
    DE Cornelius Washington, Georgia
    LB Jake Knott, Iowa State
    SS Shamarko Thomas, Syracuse

I think you'll have at the very least a "mediocre" draft. And that's all guys that are supposedly rated 6th or 7th round.

People are genuinely saying Wilson will fall to the 6th or 7th round? That's like the WR equivalent to Dennard falling to the Pats in the 7th. Wilson, from what I saw, is a legitimate 2nd rounder. His off the field stuff is THAT bad eh? Man. Talk about a theft if we were able to snag him in the 5th.

that is what I was thinking… Fasano as well. I wouldnt be surprised to see the four guys you mentioned walk. I could see the Fins bring in Jennings OL and DL. that would give us a net lose of one if contracts match up

That would be pretty awesome. Having 7 picks in the first 4 rounds would be a lot of fun come draft weekend. Especially when Ireland seems like he has no choice but to go after playmakers.
