I found this article interesting because I have been finding myself openly wondering about whether to keep Clemons or not. He isn't really talked about when it comes to our impending free agents. I find myself leaning more on the side of keeping him and drafting a safety. I know he doesn't make the splash plays we all want but he is steady and like the article talks about does very well in coverage with only 6 first downs and TD's combined being attributed to him. Thoughts?

They also had him graded positively for the year so that's a big confusing. From my amateur eye test re-watching the Fins games and seeing how I felt about our free agents, I'm honestly okay with us delaying it for a season. Sign him to a 2 year 6 mil contract and be done with it.

Address the need next season. This safety class is somewhat deep in the upper-middle part, but unless I'm starting down Matt Elam with the Colt's 2nd rounder, I'm not really wanting to address it.

Clemons is a play it safe type of FS. He doesn't get beat deep much and he doesn't make many plays. That's fine for our defense IMO but I'm not at all against having a more dynamic player back there.

Have debated many folks about this kids game, especially ones that said he would be getting cut every year.. good for him..

I am interested in the Rambo connection with Jones, or maybe honey badger in the fourth or fifth, but if they don't fall, I'm good with CC..we got much bigger fish to fry..

Just let this dude work in the same scheme and position for a while, and he'll continue to show you that there is ceiling left.

His pursuit is sometimes a bit funny, but the guy does deep zone coverage well, and I think when you're pairing him with a guy like Reshad Jones that's pretty valuable.

I think CB is definitely a bigger need than S, so if you can re-sign Chris Clemons at a reasonable price, it's prudent to do so. However, with Jeff Ireland's recent comments about getting more playmakers and generating more turnovers, it wouldn't surprise me if the Dolphins looked at different free agent options and/or options in the draft.

really, your just gonna disregard this players game and these isolated stats..Chris Clemons is and has been a much better player than what the majority have given him credit for, Pff confirms.

We don't need to replace him, he does take a bit of time to feel comfortable in the scheme, and lord knows we haven't been stable in that dept since his arrival, I just think he's probabaly not the smartest player, but when he gets comfortable, the more his speed starts to show up and his nature becomes more nasty.

He was being sarcastic - not that I'd count PFF as the ultimate arbiter of good or bad play.

We need a developmental prospect, no question, and id like to get that young player in the draft, but we don't need to go high on the position..

You don't need to replace him. But if you can UPGRADE that position with someone more dynamic than him, why wouldn't you do it?

Because the only way your going to upgrade the position is to spend a high resource doing it, and I'm not willing to do that because of what he does do well..

We do need a prospect in that unit to develop, but not with the first 5 imo.

There are some very nice free agent options out there; I'm not just looking at draft picks. Even in the draft, you might be able to get a nice player with a 3rd or 4th round pick.

Well your gonna have to be more specific Ro, he's a free agent, so if you don't think his game is solid, then let him go and use your philosophy, if you do think he's solid, then sign him, and don't worry about the position unless a hi ceiling raw prospect drops to the fourth or later..jmo.

I've been saying for a long time that we'd be better off drafting or signing about 8 guys in FA that could easily replace Sean Smith....but people are too freaked out after losing Vontae also. Our corner situation was horrendous and just cause Sean Smith had a few games where guys didn't blow him up....we should suddenly hand him huge money? Screw that.

I also liked Clemons a lot in that first year (still robbed by the Refs on the Steelers fumble!) but between injuries and lack of flash it became hard to defend. He bounced back nicely albeit he's not flashy but I'll take that kind of hidden production any day over a guy who makes big plays but gives em up to. He's our defensive center fielder. Hopefully we find a way to re-sign him.

2 5th round safeties not only starting but playing well. That's value.

Keep our safeties...and bring in some new corners.

If that quote in their comments section is true..that's pretty damn impressive with the revolving door at CB.

They both have good size and speed, and I'm comfortable that if Rj got hurt, Chris could play near the LOS well.

That I don't think Carroll is a good CB aside, I think Wilson got shortchanged by position shuffles and injuries.

i think Clemons played 'ok' ... and think he should be resigned to a realistic contract ... Clemons made improvements this year -- not a noteable as Jones, but improvement none-the-less.'

still believe that our whole secondary lacked any real coaching the last couple years ... and we actually saw some this year. Regardless, CB is our area of need besides an impact player at RDE/ROLB to compliment Wake to improve our D ...

Which makes you wonder, were other teams picking on our corners because our safeties were that good or were are safeties stats padded because it was just too easy to go at our coners?

Well, to be more specific, I'd have to see who Miami re-signs of their own free agents. Let's say, hypothetically, they bring back Randy Starks and one of three between Sean Smith, Brian Hartline, and Jake Long. I think that gives you enough money left to still investigate trying to sign a Jairus Byrd, Dashon Goldson, or even Ed Reed on a 1 year deal. If you can't get them, then work on bringing back Chris Clemons.

In the draft, if you haven't signed Clemons or one of the above free agents, you can still land a solid prospect with out spending a 1st, 2nd, or 3rd. I'd think guys like Bacarri Rambo, D.J. Swearinger, Robert Lester and Duke Williams could be around in the 4th. If you do re-sign Clemons, then later on, you can look at Jonathan Cyprien, Shamarko Thomas, and Rashard Hall as developmental guys.

Simply re-signing Chris Clemons and calling the safety position done just doesn't cut it for me. There's more dynamism left to be had there.

The signs aren't looking good for him returning

    -SS wants big dollars
-Ireland wants turnovers (SS has 5 in 3 years)
-Tweets about wanting to play in a different system

Chris Clemons is good and all, but it is easy to be rated No. 1 in first downs against when his teammate Smith gives them up like they are going out of style. :shifty:

Chris Clemons doesn't make plays, he usually just prevents them. That's not exactly a bad quality to have so I think we should attempt to re-sign him depending on his asking price.
