***Offical 2013 New York Yankees Thread***

JT doesn't want to do it anymore, he thinks if we switch the author up of this maybe the team will win the World Series. It isn't going to happen as I am the biggest jinx in sports history. But lets go on here....

So the big news so far......they didnt hug.....

A-Rod that moron they told him to stay in New York and not go to Tampa; I am sure when the team breaks north for the season, he will "all of a sudden"
break south to Tampa for the remander of his rehab....Here is hoping he doesn't play this year :ffic:

GOING: Nick Swisher, Rafael Soriano, Russel Martin, Eric Chavez, and Raul Ibanez

STAYING/COMING: Andy Pettitte, Hiroki Kuroda, Ichiro Suzuki, and The Wizard aka God aka Mariano Rivera, Shaun Kelly, Travis Hafner

These thoughts are my own and sweet Jesus if you know me you know everybody A)disagrees with me and B)I am always right!!! (that was for you BDH )

Trying to keep to the "under 189" plan you had to know that the Yanks werent doing much this offseason and I am honestly glad they didnt. They kept their 1st round pick for the 2nd year in a row AND got some very nice comp picks looking forward to the June draft. As well, this past year's FA class was awful IMO, and they would have wasted their money anyway. I mean anybody that can throw the ball and had a heartbeat got over 10M dollars. I dont mean Dempster Fink, I am talking like E-Jax, Anibel Sanchez, etc etc....The media flirted with the idea of Josh Hamiliton, and I admit I thought of it too, but realistically you knew that wasnt happening. I like the signings they did remind me of the signings they have been doing in the recent past, good low risk, high reward players allocating minut money too.

    PROJECTED LINEUP:

    1)Jeter
    2)Gardy/Ichiro
    3)Cano
    4)Tex
    5)Youk
    6)Granderson
    7)Pronk/Nuneeeeeeeeez
    8)Gardy/Ichiro
    9)Stewart/Cervelli/Romine (eventually)

This certainly isn't the Bronx Bomber home run ladened lineup we are used to out of the Empire and honestly what a breathe of fresh air too. I am interested in seeing what this lineup produces as I like the potential of this lineup to do the more fundamental things that previous ones simply could not. Moving guys over, bunting, knowing how to hit with 2-strikes, going with the pitch. The reliance on "shooting for the porch" has again in my eyes made them an all or nothing type team. I like the prospect of actually having some OBP batters on here for a change. This team will as with other teams "bleed the pitch count" Gardy/Ich/Tex/Youk/Jeter all have good command of the strike zone. Grandy does too but he is wildly inconsistent, as with Cano but Cano is just such a damn good hitter that he makes up for 90K's a year with it. If Cano turned 90 K's into 50-60 he would most likely have his first of "multple" batting titles we are still waiting for. I expect Cano to go off this year in a walk year, and if Tex actually hits for some avg along with his power this lineup has the potential be better than last years ironically. Catching offense is a problem, they didnt replace Martin as he was a casualty of the 189 plan, all I want is defense and timely hitting out of that position, maybe they platoon and get it done who knows. Add in Nix, Dan Johnson, and Matt Diaz for hitting depth as well. People get enamored with how many runs are scored and scoring differential, which the Yanks have done very well over the past few years on only to mysteriously "lose" it 3 years in a row in the playoffs. It isn't a fluke or a mystery, the problem is clear.

Jeter (90) Cano (96) Martin (95) Tex (83) ARod (116) Swisher (141) Rob Deer aka Granderson (195!) this team when push came to shove was a swing and miss team...Christ even Andruw Jones K'd 71 times in 233 AB's. In order for this lineup to be successfull this stat has to clear up, make pop-ups or 2 hoppers to the SS I dont care, STOP SWINGING AND MISSING!!!! They wont be leading in runs scored at the end of the year like years past but they will be scoring more efficiently and consistantly which is the answer to winning; instead of blowing out 10-15 games a year by double digit runs skewing the stats when the team hits 5 home runs in one game.

Remember folks the dynasty years had one home run hitter (Tino) and the rest of the line-up single, doubled and walked you to death. But they all could hit 20 home runs...love it as it comes, don't rely on the home run, rely on the simple things singles, walks, and doubles....

    PROJECTED STARTING ROTATION

    1) CC
    2) Hiroki
    3) AP/Hughes
    4) Hughes/AP
    5) Phelps/Nova

They are old. They have question marks. What if they dont pitch well? Save it. EVERY rotation has question marks, it is baseball. You know what else they are IF they do stay healthy?? Real effing good okay. Please make an argument against it. People waited for this rotation to fall apart last year and it didnt as other teams did. And thats WITH what is to be considered a down year from CC. As well they have decent depth, Michael Pineda (down 20 pounds ) looks to be on track to come back in June and what a nice shot in the arm to this pitching staff that would be, plug him into that 5th spot and you have yourself the best 5th in the game, provided he is what he is supposed to be. Call me crazy I think they should hold off on Andy until mid-May or Memorial Day, the key is for him to be pitching in Sept and if they make the playoffs. I just dont see him getting 200IP on a full year so that means they will be pulling him back in Sept (5 inning starts) etc. Washington screwed up with Strasburgh by starting him right away and not waiting until May in hindsight (who knew they would make the playoffs), but that team is totally different in the playoffs with him, there is kind of a similarity here because IMO this Division is coming down to September. Again the goal is September.

CC I expect big things out of this year, the guy is an ace (wait for my he isn't one by May however) and the job he did with his elbow problem was nothing short of straight balls. He gets the operation, says it is clean and ready to go, gets 100% healthy and is going to be that horse in more than just the innings way hopefully. Would love to see him dominate this year, he is the lynch pin this year to that rotation. Hughes is developing into a good MLB starter, that HR rate has to come down but they are starting to get what they envisioned out of him. Phelps is such a luxary for being just a kid he is quite unflappable, spot starter, emergency guy, long inning reliever he does everything. He is like the ultility pitcher if there ever was such a term. Nova concerns me, he has an atittude that strikes me as confusing, some of the things he says is mindblogging. The tools are there, he has the pitches he just doesn't put it together however he is very young and hopefully the light shines on him and he gets it. Nova wasn't projected to be anything, so what they have got out of him thus far is pretty darn good if you ask me, but as a Yankee fans we are greedy and we want him here for good pitching well. Simply if he doesnt do well, he will watch Mariano's last year in the bully.

    PROJECTED BULLPEN

    Closer-Mariano
    RP-Robertson
    RP-Logan
    RP-Phelps/Nova
    RP-Robertson
    RP-Aardsma

Their buulpen IMO is one of the best along with Atlanta's and Boston's and it is a great fall back to have in days when their pitchers fail. Baltimore got to the playoffs strictly on their bullpen. I wish they had another LHP in there because especially in the AL East you need 2.

On Mariano, I am going to say this.....

Until he fails I am not concerned. The national media needs to quit questioning the guy, he deserves that much. Girardi joked the other day he isnt going to let him shag in KC, but he can every where else. A true professional, an icon, and if nothing else I will enjoy watching him this year the most of out every ballplayer in baseball.

Robertson, Nova/Phelps, Logan, have all been here and proved they are legit pitchers in a very elite hitting Division. I just get nervous that someday Roberston's arm is going to just quit the way he pitches in that frame. Lastly Aardsma is the hallmark of Cashman's signings lately and a great veteran presence to have in there, like Soriano if he pitches to potential he may actually be the next closer after this year. Pre-surgery he was one of the best CP in the game and he is back 100% and by years end I think he will have many appearance out og the pen for them. They made a trade a few days ago for a Shaun Kelley who possessed a 9.1 K/9IP last year. Just another quiet under the radar trade that could pay out this year. Not to mention Clay Rapada is back and showed last year he can pitch as well.

As with this year I am going to predict correctly that pitching won't be an issue, unless they go all Boston and get injured every other day or just eat alot of chicken and drink alot of beer in between appearances.

    CONCLUSION

This team is fine and they will be there in the end with a shot for the playoffs along with every team in the Division except Ba Bo Ba Bo Ba.......

Baltimore. I dont believe in miracles happening every year, and honestly especially this year it will take a miracle for them to make the playoffs much less go 29-9 in one run games. Boston it wouldnt surprise me if they win 70 or 90 games. I truely believe most of them gave up on Bobby and then they just played for the draft pick after that. They love Farrell so we will see, as the talent is there. Toronto I mean on paper they are the Divison champs right? I remember when Balitmore years back was the first 200M (correct me if I am wrong) dollar team I believe and they were the paper champs and they tanked so the game is played on the field. I do know that they aren't head and shoulders more dominate than any other team in that Division. Lastly I believe TB took a MINOR step back (Shields and no real power hitter) however they in the end will be there in the end as their pitching will rule the day. Their problem again is where is there offense coming from besides Longo whom I love. Mr. Clutch right there.

This might be the last good year for a few if they plan to stick to this 189 plan because if they arent going to spend money and they lose potentially Hiro, AP, Mariano, Granderson, Youk and dont replace them it will get tricky....real tricky to compete going forward while they wait for some prospects to develop. Added onto that but the mafia team of Cano/Boras will literally hold up the team for every dollar they have, not to mention Hughes is a free agent and so is Joba. AJ's money comes off the books after this year I believe so that helps.

ARod what to do? ugh...I root for the guy because he is on my favorite team, but make no mistake I am and will ALWAYS be organization first. His act is tired, he is one of the biggest liars in sport today, the guy is such a turnoff to the hard working players on that team which is odd because HE himself works hard to get on the field, then he just effs off on the actual field. Whether it be this lastest roid thing in Florida, requesting ugly ho's numbers in the playoffs while his Captain breaks his ankle, to everything in between I am finding not much to like about him anymore. I would love the Yanks to do the right thing and break him a check for 100M right there on the spot and tell him to screw. There is talk of a 80% insurance plan that kicks in if he misses the whole season so I hope that happens. He is the ONLY reason they are cash strung, if they didnt have his contract they could live with CC and Tex's going forward. The guy is washed up, he isnt making the Hall ever (but evidence of the lastest HoF selection process), he isnt getting the HR title because he can't hit them at the rate he needs to. He is a distraction to everything on that team and is not worth the money. Not to mention he only hits singles and the occasionaly double now....30M dollar slap hitting ***%ole. Not to mention he gets HUGE money incentives for milestones he breaks that he is close to breaking, so why play the guy? I hope his leg falls off, ugh I take that back but you know what I am getting at. I put this on the fans going forward, they need to boo him upon sight, boo him every at bat, every appearance we all need to make it known his isn't welcome there anymore. Guys listen it is the only way, as Rick Pitino would say "the old A-Rod isn't walking through that door" as much as people think it is, be realistic here for a change.....make it unbearable so the brass cut him a buyout check and call it the day, because I just can't picture this lasting another 5 years. And if that doesnt work, bench him, make him pinch hitter. Jeter must want to kill him I swear, and when Youk plays next to him (regardless of the stat output Youk does) Jeter is going to love to go into games with a guy that gets dirty and doesnt give any aspect of the game away in both the field or in the box. /Rant....

Anyway hard decisions are going to be made but I believe you have to sign Cano and Hughes. I am sure this debate will rage all year and I look forward to it.

Thanks guys for listening, looking forward to getting yelled at some more and see ya'll at the ballpark!!!

if your a jinx start a Boston Red Sox 2013 thread! But you did a way better job then I could have in the 2013 Official Yankee thread. I am worried about this year team. We have made no big moves in the offseason and honestly I don't get the sense of winning being important to Hal and Hank as George had. I do like the fact that it looks like they will play more small ball and we still have players like Granderson, Cano, Tex, Jeter, and a solid pitching staff, if everyone can stay healthy we should win our division again. 28 in 13! Lets get this!

Thanks for the words bro...it is mostly just ramblings.....

I mean who knows what they have in mind you know? Maybe they ARE planning a buyout of A-Rod and need extra although I doubt it, could be they have a FA in mind in a few years....or it could be they simple don't like paying taxes as all businesses do....

I think the point is pretty clear though as they have done it the past few years now, that they can compete without spending on every high priced FA available....in the 90's they didnt do that, it was mostly homegrown talent and very smart trades that got them the core of the 5 modern days rings.....

Also I dont think you aren't going to see 10 year contracts from the Yanks much anymore unless it is a 23 year old phenom like Jeter.....

I sit down with Boras and say this simply.......7/171 and not a penny more, and let us know by mid-June....because if Cano says no they got to deal him...if Cano says it is NOT all about the money at age 30......7 years 171M is a very very very very one more time......very good offer....if of course that is if he wants to be a Yankee as he said he does

"Hi Brian, this is Scott again. I see your rotation is currently CC, Pettitte, Kuroda, Ivan Nova and David Phelps. The AL East could be decided by 1 game. 1 game could be the difference between making the playoffs or being the 2011 Red Sox. Do you really want to risk it and pass on my client, Kyle Lohse, and count on a guy coming off of surgery, an over 40 year old, a 38 year old, a guy coming off of his worst MLB and an unknown? And a guy with a bad back in February? You have my number, call me."

And yes I agree I'd pass on Lohse too, just trying to have some fun.

Yankees thinking about switching Brett Gardner to CF and Granderson to LF, they're already having Granderson get fly balls from LF. Would be a smart move defensively although Granderson would be costing himself possibly a lot of money moving out of CF.

Tough break.... (see what I did there?).

Seriously though you have to wonder how effective he'll be when he returns and when he actually will return, as often times breaking a hand/wrist/forearm vaps a hitter's power. With all 5 AL East teams pretty evenly matched for the most part having him out for that extended period of time but make a huge difference. Unfortunately for the Yankees they don't have a lot of depth if a player goes down for an extended period of time like this.

Yankees made 'significant offer' to Robinson Cano

Yankees usually wait until their contract is up before talking extension. I think they are afraid of the New "Spenders" in baseball the Dodgers swooping in on Cano after the season is over. I hope they can get a deal done soon!

He won't sign it, Boras won't let him. This is the point of why I hate Boras, whatever the Yankees put on the table is most definately an awesome offer that far exceeds others, and that jerk will hold up the team for more for no reason.

Ultimately it's on the player though. The agent works for them, not the other way around. Sure Boras gives the players his advice and guidance but if Cano likes the offer and wants to stay he will.

Another Yankee Injury, Brian Cashmen is out 3-4 weeks with a broken ankle from skydiving with the U.S. Army, Ive been skydiving twice, and you are suppose to pick your feet up before you land, so he probably did it the wrong way. I guess if you are going to get a Sky Diving injury, a broken ankle aint bad

I think the AL East will be pretty close, I think any of the 5 teams has just as much of a chance to finish 1st as they are to finish 5th. I do think the Blue Jays are getting too much love from everyone though, they have just as many question marks as the other 4 teams but it never gets brought up because "they won the winter". Should be a fun year though.

"It started as a Twitter rumor, as these things tend to do. Yesterday afternoon, word spread that Robinson Cano had failed a drug test, and his PED suspension would be announced soon. Because similar rumors have recently turned out to be correct, and because Cano is a superstar and a Yankee and playoff bound, this one got traction.

Peter Gammons said he'd heard the rumor, and wasn't willing to dismiss them out of hand. Cano was forced to deny it. His agent Scott Boras did too. Even an MLB official came out and said there was nothing to it.

Usually, these things stay confined to the internet. But this story made the jump to mainstream, appearing in the New York papers and national outlets today. Why? Because the source wasn't some anonymous message board poster, or untraceable crowdsourced Twitter whispers, but an actual reporter.

Dan Tordjman of WSOC in Charlotte is not a sports reporter, but he is a Mets fan and describes himself on his Twitter account as a "keen observer of NY sports." And yesterday, he went on a tweet spree that was somehow as assured as it was equivocal:"

Why i ****ing hate Twitter. Some idiot reporter who doesnt even cover Sports and is also a Mets fan spews some bull**** on Twitter and eventually even MLB has to respond to his accusations with ZERO proof.
