Who needs players that actually fit what you run?

This is the fans' point of view on this. They see Reggie Bush, they see the big plays he makes, and they ignore the fact that he brings no consistency to the table and is a below average zone runner. "He makes big plays, so we have to keep him!"

It's the same fallacy in thinking that the team just absolutely has to sign Mike Wallace and overpay him to get him. "He makes big plays!" Yeah, but he's a bad fit for the offense because he does not run out patterns, dig patterns, or comebacks well at all. Guess what? Those routes just happen to be the major routes receivers run in this offense. $12 million for a one trick pony whose numbers have declined in each of the last three years. Those of us that understand statistics know that is a trend, and it is a trend that is unlikely to reverse course. When Mike Wallace's speed leaves him, he's got nothing to go on in the NFL. He's not quick. He's not physical. He's not going to win many battles in tight coverage for the ball. Really, all he can do is run by you, and this past year, he only caught 19.4% of the "deep passes" that went his way.

I'd like Reggie to give us a nice hometown discount. He wasn't perfect but I'd guess 80% of our offensive "highlight" plays were #22.

I think Detroit might be the best fit for him. That's where I thought he'd go all along.

Because with only ONE playmaker on the team, we're afraid, with our GM's allergy to drafting playmakers, we get rid of him and we don't have ANY for the next year or two.

I had seen enough of Reggie by midseason to say this would be the move, I think he's a hell of a worker, a great teammate, but he's a luxury player when we need a workhouse, downhill pounder, if he was willing to accept a role and have that contract reflect then ok, but if he views himself as the man in the backfield I believe it's the right move to let him go.

Eddie lacy is in play for me if he's at 2a.

Trust Ireland, just look at his track record!

Uhm, yeah, let's hope Miller is a durable workhorse, it worked with Daniel Thomas..wait what?

If Lamar Miller can learn the playbook, there is a good chance people won't even remember Reggie Bush was a dolphin in 2 years.

B/c he did not draft Bush and pretty much had to trade for him at a fire sale price to be sure to land him as otherwise he may never have landed in Miami as a FA?

And yet, the hope this offseason is, Ireland of course will sign FA's for the offense while losing the playmakers we already have on the roster..oh the irony.

That's the beauty of ireland. So incompetent he actually rids himself of the players he finds. Lol.

Except Wake. That's a good one.

Now, I love Miller. I don't trust Thomas. That's the gist of things. Bush isn't ideal, but we know what he is. We don't know what Miller is yet. We know what Thomas is and it isn't good.

If we let Bush leave, he leaves. It is what it is. But I just hope it doesn't bite us in the arse if Miller gets hurt/doesn't pan out and Thomas is Thomas.

So who gets credit for Lamar Miller? In Lamar's rookie season, 33.6% of his runs went for more than 15 yards. Reggie Bush had 37% of his runs go for more than 15 yards. Know what the difference between the two is? Lamar Miller averaged 3.5 yards per attempt on all other runs. Reggie Bush averaged 2.9 yards per rush. Even Daniel Thomas was more consistent than Reggie, averaging 3.2 yards per rush on all runs less than 15 yards. Lamar Miller also had the 5th best "Pulse Rate" in the NFL among all running backs with an average of 4.04 YPR on rushes that went for less than 10 yards.

Those numbers don't even address the fact that Lamar is a better fit for a zone blocking scheme like the Dolphins want to run. Unlike Reggie, Lamar is a runner that will put his foot in the ground and get down field. He's not going to waste time dancing in the backfield with a lot of east/west motion. He's going to read his blocks, see his cut back, put his foot in the ground, and hit the hole. The fact that he brings tremendous big play ability to boot is a plus.

This isn't so much related as it is some shoehorned bitterness that doesn't test a smell test.

Reggie Bush is a "playmaker" in the most worthless sense of the term. The occasional highlight reel play does not make up inability to handle the basics. Style points don't count for ****.

Good thing we drafted Brandon Marshall as well..oh wait.

At some point it may sink in that Ireland takes very few chances and would much rather trade for a playmaker then try to draft them.

Yeah, and we shall replace his production with bluster, that always works.

The other problem is the way the politics of football works, Miller will be the default, he will play, this with Thomas being injury prone and no other credible depth. Suspect Ireland wants to pay him to be depth behind Miller and Bush will go find greener pastures and a starting role..who can blame him?

Ireland has to have confidence in his draft choices, as fans and after watching them fail, we have every reason not to be confident, but that is how the NFL works.

Miami must be the only team in NFL history that let go of a starter to play a younger player that is a better fit for what they want to do then.

You have to be careful what you wish for. The rub here is Miller will be under a tremendous amount of pressure to live up.
We will need big plays from this guy immediately.

Once again, the focus is on big plays and not consistency in performance. That is misplaced focus, and it shows why it is a good thing fans don't make personnel decisions.

How many GM's and coaches are fired each offseason?

And it is about big plays, the league has changed Kb, 4 .2 ypa really does not mean as much as it once did.

I'm Lol'ing at your citing Thomas' runs outside of 15 yards. Conveniently left out his number of runs over 15%. So what was it? Daniel Thomas is consistently mediocre. and never hits home runs. Is that how far you have to reach to justify Daniel Thomas?

I said I like Lamar Miller. But we don't know if he is the guy yet. In a league when rookie RB's usually come in and start right away, he had chances in game 2 and 3 and then disappeared. Why is that? Is he dumb as a rock? Is he weak at blocking? What is it?

I like what I see from Miller, and do agree he's our future. I just think Bush/Miller is 100000x better than Miller/Thomas.

By the way, 3.5 and 2.9 ain't such a huge difference I'm sitting here with my jaw on the ground or anything. For a guy who fits our system to a T, I'd expect more than half a yard difference.

Let's not also forget neither Miller or Thomas has railed off home runs either with very long runs.

Thank you. I am so sick of people saying he is our only "playmaker." Yes he scored some touchdowns and has some big runs; he also killed numerous drives by being inconsistent and going for too much. I'd much rather have a runningback who gets consistent yardage to go along with the occasional "play."

I think we too often forget those drive killing runs because there aren't any highlight reels of them. I can still remember one play clearly that perfectly encapsulates why I'm not a huge fan of Bush.

It was 2nd and 3. Reggie runs to the left and had any easy three yards if he just went forward (there was an obvious hole), but instead he bounced it to the outside and lost five yards. Instead of a first down, it was now 3rd and 9, which Miami failed to convert.

Those are the types of plays I'd like to avoid.

I'm Lol'ing cause you completely missed the point. He isn't defending Thomas....he's using Thomas to point out how idiotically bad Reggie was last season because he was always trying to make a home run when he should have been taking the double that was there.

Lets put it in perspective since folks around here LOVE PFF. Reggie Bush was a -2.6 player this season. Lamar Miller was our only positive running back this past season.

Sure his big plays were nice.....it was nice to see someone score TD's...but just cause he was the only guy..doesn't mean it's right to keep him. He was a drive killer also.

    Srsly?

The OL was poor last yr, the same PFF you quote also ranked us the worst OL in the AFCE, but let's just skip over that little fact.

I dont see him going to the Bengals for sure because of the deal that they just gave Benjarvus last year. Oakland and San Diego are interesting because they both have talented RBs (McFadden and Matthews) however they both tend to get hurt. At the end of the day I would say that he ends up in Detroit. If you were watching NFL network last week there was actually a player from the lions (can't think of his name atm) but he was publicly urging reggie bush to come to Detroit. In the end regardless, I think its safe to say that he will not be on the Fins next year.

I refuse to bother getting into a debate over the state of the offense because based on your other posts you've clearly got a specific beef that you can't let go of to have a rational debate.

FYI I only quoted PFF cause those same folks who think Bush actually did well (Sorry folks..but I seriously question if you have an f'n clue about football if you think Bush did well) swear by PFF. Myself...I'm in the middle ground with them. For example they couldn't grade their way out of a paper bag when it comes to zone blocking OL.

The simple fact is that Bush is barely a 1000 yard feature back. Being in the realm of 4.0 avg carry as a feature back means crap...it's the equivalent of being a 1000 yard #1 back. That was great...............in the 70's. The fact is Bush killed a crap load of drives dancing around and when he wasn't pulling off those chunk yards he sucked ***. Call it the line all you want.........but gee the line sure looked good when Miller was running.

If we weren't trying to run a zone blocking OL I'd welcome him back in a reduced role as the clear #2 guy. But the fact is he's not a good fit for Sherman's offense and with all the cap room, picks and a generally ok crop of FA's..I'd rather find someone different.

I'd look into Danny Woodhead. Now here's a guy who had 7 TD's as a "complimentary" player. Question with him...is whether he can do that outside of NE. Not sure what type of blocking scheme the Rams use but I'd be curious about Stephen Jackson splitting duties with Miller (If he would even go for that). Would give us a tough in between the tackles runner to compliment Miller. Then of course there is Bradshaw. Him and Miller combined would be deadly...but again the risk there is health.

Nobody is saying that. A 4.1 ypc would not be very good. What people want out of Bush is for him to be a consistent yardage gainer instead of a boom or bust runner. Unless you're an Adrian Peterson type boom or bust runner, I'd much rather take a consistent gainer.

Footballoutsiders had Reggie Ranker 30th this past season. They've done numerous studies showing that boom or bust is not good. A series of runs like (4, 5, 7, 4) yards is more valuable than (1, 20, -2, 3) yards even though the second set actually gained two more yards overall.

I don't know what you were reading, but I wasn't trying to justify Daniel Thomas.

There's not a huge difference between 3.5 YPC and 2.9 YPC? Really? 3 rushes of 3.5 YPC is a first down. 3 rushes of 2.9 YPC is a punt. So, tell me how can there not be much difference when on results in keeping the ball, and one results in giving it to the other team? Particularly when the one averaging 3.5 YPC is a rookie and the one averaging 2.9 YPC is a 7 year veteran.

Do you actually read what you are posting, or do you just post without thinking?

This isn't about averaging 4.1 YPC without big plays to averaging 2.9 YPC with big plays. This is about getting a guy on the field that can give you both the big plays and consistency. That's not Reggie Bush.

It is so obvious to me that the majority of you have no background in football, as you don't have a clue about scheme fits.

Cincinnati's rumored to be interested because they want a compliment to Green-Ellis. He had a good year, but he's limited in what he does. They were using Bernard Scott as a change of pace back, but he's been injured a lot. Brian Leonard is more of pseudo-fullback/3rd down pass catcher for them. They'd find some creative ways to fit Reggie in and he'd still get 12-15 touches per game there.

He'd do well in that offense with Green, Sanu, Jones all on the outside, Hawkins in the slot and Gresham at TE. He'd be one more weapon for Andy Dalton, who surprisingly, a lot of Bengals fans are starting to sour on (can't beat good defenses).
