Couldn't Miami strike a new deal with him? He has to see that if he is cut by Miami that he isn't going to get a good deal at this point.
You can agree to a trade with the club who owns his rights, just like we did in trading Welker to NE. It doesn't have to be for our 2nd rd pick or above so long as they agree to it. Only if we sign him to an offer sheet and they don't match would we have to trade our 2nd rounder. We did a similar thing in getting Brandon Marshall.
Right, but that wasn't the discussion. The discussion was whether we could simply sign both and give up the 2nd rounders, which we can't. Also, not sure the other team would be willing to play ball since there is no leverage of signing the guy to an offer sheet. Plus on Welker, the only reason we traded him is that Bob Kraft had a friendship with Huizenga and didn't want to do a "poison pill" contract, so they threw in their 7th and made it a trade. Also was chepaer for them too. but if we had said no, they would have signed Welker
What makes him desirable though? There are still other free agents available. They've not all gone. Why should we want him on the team? We have a decent slot corner in Marshall, and he's got a better attitude.
Let me pose the opposite question to you. Since there's nothing keeping the Dolphins from cutting him (no dead weight), why invite him to training camp at all?
To compete. He wouldn't be on the roster now if they didn't see something in him that was worth keeping. Honestly, why not just cut him now? They could have easily tendered McCann if they just wanted to keep a roster spot.
I think the only reason he's not yet been cut is they've not yet addressed the position. He's an insurance policy.
Well the real problem here is...when was the last time a draft pick compensated RFA actually happened? NFLPA believes teams are colluding to avoid this now.
I'm conflicted between using the extra picks for restricted players or for trading up back into the first.
If you can pick up somebody you know will be a contributor, than IMO it is worth giving up the pick for an RFA. Who knows who will be available at your pick of if somebody is looking to trade out of the first.
I guess the question is whether he's worth testing out..... holding 4.5 on the books is the cost. Until we bring someone in.... he's worth holding onto.
Nice to see RFA's back in play. It's been a while. Patriots love their small guys though. 5'11"...180lbs.
looks like the pittsburgh post gazette was a little to early on that, schefter tweeted 2 hours ago that the pats still think about signing sanders to an offer sheet, nothing happened yet
I would be really happy if we got Brown. We did resign Clemons to only a 1 year deal. IMO this would be the most impactful and also the most probable
