I can always list more, ha. The key is that you learn from them. I feel like I have learned from each mistake and have improved each year. Of course, it helps that I have less to miss on because I now watch less prospects than I did before. There's not enough time in a day. Or a week. Or a year.
So the less I work, the less chance I have of making a mistake, the less mistakes I make the more awesome I am..... Therefore......The less I work the more awesome I am! Alen is a genius.
Aaron Curry for me, for sure. I thought there was no chance he'd be a bust. Safest pick in the draft, and worth #1. And Jimmy Williams (S, Virginia Tech) in 2006 I thought was going to be amazing. Nope.
If you click this link, there's a video of Jones running two 40's. Certainly looks like he's limping, so I'd tend to doubt that he's actually a 4.92-4.95 guy. http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap10...arvis-jones-lackluster-during-georgia-pro-day 28 sacks and 44 TFL's in the SEC the past two season pretty much speaks for itself.
Add me to the Aaron Curry group!.... Rolando McClain, too. Thought Torrey Smith was an athlete playing football. Wups.
Guys in the Surferosa hall of shame: QB: Patrick Ramsey - thought he was going to be a star coming out of Tulane. Huge arm, smarts. Yet nothing. RB: Leeland Mcelroy - the next Barry Sanders RB: Vernand Morency- the next Leeland Mcelroy WR: Ted Ginn - Devin Hester only faster WR: Mark Clayton - the one from Oklahoma drafted by the Ravens OL: Max Jean-Gilles - road grader OL: Toniu Fonoti - another road grader DE: Vernon Gholston - I was absolutely enamored with his tools DT: Brodrick Bunkley - lifetime journeyman DE: Everette Brown - Thought he would become an all pro pass rusher LB: Channing Crowder - thought hed have a 10 yr career as a MLB for the Dolphins DB: Philip Buchanon - the next great cover corner S: Stuart Schweigert - Hes big, hes fast, he can do it all!
I don't have much time these days to watch a lot of video as I used to. I watched every D play of Jones in three different games. The NFL player he reminds me of the most is James Harrison. He hits with a mean streak. He has what I would describe as "heaviness" when he hits. He also has a couple of good quick moves. There were some OTs that handled him a bit. That said, I don't think he'd really be as suited in a 4-3 as an OLB (certainly doesn't have the size for a 4-3 DE, except in a passing situation). But, I think he'd be ideal in the Steelers D as an OLB and would be another Harrison in that D. Even in those games, he didn't seem to show a lot of speed in pursuit and was not very good in pass cover in the few situations when he was called to. Just didn't have the elite open-field quickness to handle it. But, a 3-4 rush OLB is where he seems suited to me.
That's essentially what he'd be in Miami. I know everyone makes a big deal that Miami runs a "4-3" defense, but there are a lot of similarities to a 3-4 scheme in it; essentially it's an Under defense, just inverted because Cameron Wake plays on the left side. Jones would be that pass-rushing OLB on the opposite side, akin to Von Miller opposite Elvis Dumervil in Denver the past two years. He'd be replacing Koa Misi, assuming Miami drafts him. I don't think he'd necessarily be in coverage a lot given the skillsets of Ellerbe and Wheeler; they're good blitzers as opposed to pass-rushers. Jones would be a 3-down player and he's got plenty of experience rushing from the right side, which is opposite of Wake. Koa Misi was a really good 2-down guy, but you could certainly upgrade from him. I think he's going to give you more instant impact than trying to groom Vernon, Shelby, and Kaddu. But those 3 are pretty nice depth that can contribute as far as 2013 is concerned. Just my two cents, but I think he fits in Miami. He certainly fits in a 3-4 scheme, and I think the Dolphins' scheme is similar enough you could draft him and try and turn Koa Misi into another draft pick.
Ill tell you what though- the LB I really hated from that draft? Clay Matthews. Thought he was riding the coattails of Cushing..
I can see this. Both of the LB's we signed will likely play like ILBs (ala SF and even as our two released LBs played last year). At the same time, they are evidently exploring Osi Umenyiora (who is a bit more classic 4-3 DE). I can see Jones being a Dumervil type also. Maybe not as quick. But, give Jones a couple of off-seasons in the weight room and I think he'd be going about 250-255 and be a very physical, intimidating Harrison type. Which would be great to me.
I don't think we ignore the obvious. The past two years, and honestly, I could say the past 3 years, the draft picks have been relatively predictable. Last year, I think everyone and their mother knew that Ryan Tannehill was going to be the pick, but there were a few that were completely convinced that Jeff Ireland would not "reach" for a quarterback with that pick. Two years ago, Mike Pouncey was the obvious pick. Three years ago, their interest in Jared Odrick was at least obvious to me and a few others leading up to the draft. I remember telling folks before that draft to keep an eye on him, that he was the type of player the front office would be all over at that time. The one draft pick that I didn't see coming was Vontae Davis. I didn't think they would take him because of the character risk, and I honestly thought they would go for Clay Matthews Jr. Just keep in the back of your mind though that had he been available, Jeff Ireland was prepared to roll the dice with Percy Harvin in that draft. At this point in time, all the tea leaves are reading Tavon Austin, and that is the one that seems to be getting ignored a lot similar to last year with this idea that Jeff will not draft a receiver high after investing in Mike Wallace. Personally, I think Jeff probably learned from the Brandon Marshall situation that you don't bring in one guy and suddenly have an improved receiving corps. Some may think Brandon Gibson may keep them from drafting a receiver, but Gibson's contract make it as likely that he will get cut after one year as it is that he will be a key part of the offense.
Definitely agree. Mayock said he weighed-in at 248lbs at is Pro Day today. At 6'2.5" and 248lbs, he's almost the same size Koa Misi was coming out of Utah. He's clearly a pretty solid athlete and has a wide array of moves and is very disruptive - 7 FF and 1 INT in 2012. He's not quite a finished product, but I think he's about as close as you're going to get when compared to the likes of Dion Jordan, Tank Carradine, Alex Okafor, and Corey Lemonier. I think Bjoern Werner is pretty close, and maybe closer than Jones, but that's about it.
The one trait that stands out from watching Jones' games is his hands. They're absolutely heavy and violent, which is impressive for his size.
I agree with everything you've said here. I just want to take notice that I never thought I'd see the day that you had not 1, but 2 WRs in your sig as the guys you like for the Dolphins at 12. And yes, I completely understand Austin is more than simply a WR.
Jarvis is a finisher, his hands at the finish are instinctually special in terms of how he strips for the ball while he attacks the Qb..uncanny knack to turn over the football..
Exactly! Jarvis is a finisher, and that is what makes him a better prospect than the guys who are better athletes in this draft. Those players include Dion Jordan and Barkevious Mingo as the two that really stand out. The fact of the matter is, if you are wanting a pass rusher, Jarvis Jones is the best in this draft along with Bjorn Werner. If you take Jordan or Mingo, you might get them to develop into pass rushers. They aren't there yet though. Jones has 28 sacks in the past two years along with 44 TFLs. Dion Jordan and Keke Mingo have between 12-14 sacks during that time span And yes, I know that there is more to rushing the passer than getting sacks. Jones is legitimate though.
Do you think Jones could be a 4-3 end eventually? Obviously he'd be a situational pass rusher early, but do you see him more as a DE or OLB a la Von Miller?
An avid Georgia follower, I did observe some weaknesses in Jones's game. He is not as stout against the run as you would like. Both ends from Florida St. are better all around against the run and pass, but Jones is dynamic in the pass rush component. He will need to get stronger if he lines up at DE, and to some extent at linebacker. He can be a game changer, but he does have areas that need improvement as does any player.
He'd be an OLB a la Von Miller. I believe he'd take on Koa Misi's role from last season from day one if Miami drafted him. He's a 3-down player.
Isolating Aaron Curry as your big mistake is like heading into a job interview and saying your biggest flaw is that you're a perfectionist.
The biggest shock in this post is not the names you missed on. It's that surferosa is still lurking around and I didn't know it until just now.
lol, thats funny. I had the same thought about Torrey Smith. Didn't think he would translate. at. all.
Well I had others, he was just the 1st to spring to mind because I was way off. Jimmy Kennedy is another one, and Courtney Brown.
Same. If you look at his skill set, it didn't really at the time. In most cases, he doesn't. But I had no idea about his mentality, which you can't really grade.
Not that he turned out to be as great as his draft stock, but in that draft I seriously thought beforehand the Browns should take Arrington.
