Beck isn't anywhere close to as athletic as Young was. Not sure why you'd make that comparison, other than they belong to the same religion and went to the same school.
Fin-D is right....I remember some comparisons. I'm not saying they were well founded....obviously they weren't.
Well, they both play QB, and throw the ball to receivers. Beck isn't even in the same universe as Steve Young when it comes to athleticism, scrambling ability or toughness. I doubt you can find even one other person here who would agree with you that John Beck is similar to Steve Young, other than being Mormon QBs from BYU.
Such a comparison, even if it were back in 2007, is one of the most preposterous comparisons I've ever heard of 2 quarterbacks.
You're too fixated on whether the comparisons were well founded and correct....obviously they sucked. They did exist though and some made sense at the time. Coming out people thought: 1) Beck was much more athletic than he ended up being against better athletes. 2) A tough guy. Can't say he is or isn't really....he certainly took a pounding he can't be too wimpy. 3) An effective leader. Those were the comparisons if I recall.
Right. It's a terrible comparison. I never saw it personally. However it was thrown around at least on the forums. Can't remember if it was here or FH.
Young was one of the most athletic, best running QBs ever. Beck was never a good runner. Even in college.
Looking back, I thought Jason Allen was going to be a stud if his hip didn't bother him going forward. That guy was a great athlete at his position with tremendous size.
Which would explain the terrible comparison I'm not sure running was the comparison exactly...I think it was more their athleticism within the pocket. Obviously I agree it was crazy. Just pointing out Fin-D isn't insane (okay he is but this isn't why).
IMO, whomever first put forth that comparison was being simplistic based on them both being Mormons from BYU. I think you could find a QB who moved well in the pocket but wasn't a good runner the way Young was. I guess we've all made some wild comparisons over the years, but that one just jumped out at me. Probably made too big a deal about it, considering it's long ago water under the bridge.
