I wouldn't mind Arkansas's hback Chris Gragg as a guy to develop behind Keller. Similar type of player IMO. Got all the intangibles.

Clay is right in that size too.

Great post. Austin brings crazy skills but you can get that from Wallace. Eifert can be that tony Gonzalez throw it to him high. He's covered but he'll grab it. The problem is, draft a te this high in this draft and you better freagin draft the next tony Gonzalez or at the very least a Winslow sr.

You can't get what Austin does out of Wallace. Wallace isn't close to being a quick laterally as Tavon Austin. Austin is an all around guy. Wallace is a straight line athlete whose only strong quality is speed.

Keller, Clay and Egnew, (or Gragg), all appear best suited for Joker or H-Back. We need an inline Y if we draft a TE. That would IMO point toward someone like Kelce in the late 2nd or anywhere in the 3rd, Dion Sims in the 4th-5th, or Michael Williams in the 5th-7th. IMO, no TE would help the run game better than Williams. This guy is Howard Cross all over again, but a little better pass catcher. He doesn't run good times, but he was able to get open and catch pretty well in the Senior Bowl. To me, all the tight ends appear to be more finesse blockers if they can block at all, except Williams. He locks on and just mauls defenders.

Imo absolutely unequivocally not as it pertains to your first question.

Tyler Eifert ran a 4.6 flat, his movement as a football player is that of a receiver, only bigger, stronger and taller..he's an absolute mismatch on the majority of linebackers, and he will exhaust one on one coverage.

true......but Clay doesn't have Gragg's 4.5 speed, and IMO isn't as good with the ball in his hands and isn't as good a blocker as Gragg.

No you cant. Wallace isn't a slot receiver. Different players, different skill set. They compliment each other, not duplicate each other.
Besides, there's no rule that says an offense can only have one receiver with playmaking ability, and it's tougher for a defense to focus on stopping our original playmaker (Wallace) if another one is present.

When you spend $60 million on Wallace it's imperative to maximize everything he brings to the table. Hartline & Gibson don't do that. Keller is a nice start. Lining up Austin next to him finishes it.

That could be quite possible.... although I wonder how much Philbin sticks to what he had/did in Green Bay b/c I don't recall any of his TEs being inline Y guys. I believe Egnew would qualify as the biggest among recent Packers tight ends.

Donald Lee was an in line guy, but he was replaced in Green Bay. I'm not sure if Andrew Quarles is an in line guy or not. I know Green Bay had him lining up in the backfield a lot. DJ Williams isn't an in line guy. Tom Crabtree isn't really an in line guy. I think there is a definite preference for the joker type of tight end by Joe Philbin, and if you look at what Mike Sherman had at Texas A&M, he also wanted tight ends that could be moved around.

I guess the Dolphins really need to hire you, because if you're right about the last line they are complete idiots.

I'm not taking a shot at you so much as hoping you're wrong btw...so don't take it wrong. I just mean having said they watched every snap of his career and determined he is an all around player not one dimensional....they are idiots if you're wrong.

Egnew maybe big, but he doesn't have the necessary skill set, yet anyway, to be effective tight in line. You maybe right in that Philbin wants or prefers all athletic tight ends, who play more in the slot or as an H-Back. When you think about it, by lining up in the slot they are taking one defender from the box to cover them, which could work about as well as blocking them in the box with an inline Y.

I think they are making a big mistake if they don't take a serious approach to Defensive End for a good bookend compliment to Wake. Wake is a disruptor and an impact player. His age should be kept in mind when considering compliments to his ability and play. Without Wake the defensive line becomes kind of vanilla and will need to be addressed if Wake went out for any reason.

True. Ultimately we're talking production and a touchdown, is a touchdown, is a touchdown- laterally, horizontally, diagonally.

how intriguing was it for you to hypothesize we were going offense with our first pick? I know you draft gurus like defense but a dolphin team that wasn't players in free agency demanded such a pick. Now they'd have more options. The intriguing pick is not Austin. Austin would be expected. Then because how short we were on receivers and now because we look like we want to put an exclamation point on the statement!

To me, the intruiging pick is either an olineman, which I am not excited about (who ever really is) or eifert. And the more I watch film on eifert the more I could forgive this team for drafting him so high. :)

Thank you and you make a great point but it comes to little more.

I don't understand why everyone wants to have a debate on this. We won't know what we got until we see him play.

You used the word hope. It's a great word. That is all we can do.

The man was clearly the top free agent on the market and whether it was a terrible move or not, we got it done. Last year was an embarrassment if all of you have forgotten. Now, did Ross say this year we're making it known, doesn't matter who it is? Sure. That most definitely was a factor. But we got an explosive commodity which the coach made a public statement about studying as if he was taking the bar. So the great word hope should be a positive hope, a joyful hope, a shut da front door talking crap about the signing after years of not doing crap in free agency and rejoice for just a moment hope (not aimed at you specifically Alex).

The question is, can you get Austin at #12 and trade back into the 1st with the extra picks to nab Eifert. That would be a coup. Then you still have your regular 2nd- and 3rd-rounders with which to plug other holes, and there will be castoffs from other teams for that, as well.

That would be crazy insane awesome. To me, it's not out of the realm of possibility. I'm giving in to the obvious feeling some of us are having that Ireland is in his last, now second to last year and the man is going buck wild. In reality, we have way too many important (italics on that) holes to do as quoted. But it looks like Ireland is just trying to save his hole by putting anentertaing product on the field. I don't blame the guy. Who here would not fight to keep their job?

That would be great but I think it would take both 2nd rounders to get it done. I doubt we could get back into the first and still keep our second. Maybe one 2nd, and two 3rds? Doubtful though.

i could be wrong and i did not really looked at it but trading back with no pick left in the 1st round and only 2nd rounders could as well be worth a 1st the next year

This is not directed AT you. I quoted you on this because your post was the last example of a common angle about this.

I really believe some people are putting the wrong spin on our FA moves with regard to Ireland. I don't believe, even for a second, that his job is in jeopardy. He was just given a new coach, last year, and he is getting players for this new system. They have decided to jump start the change in personnel with FA instead of going exclusively with the draft, which would add years to the quest of a serious playoff run.

The more I think about it, the more I believe Ireland will go for playmakers in an effort to salvage his job. This won't be a meat and potatoes draft.

Whole new perspective I was too clouded to even consider. Thanks.

I think he's been planning for this year, though. Which doesn't even back up my feeling about trying to save his job. I don't think scheme matters much. He saved the loot and this year is the year. Hey, from an Ireland disliker, props to the man. Whether history will be kind is one thing. I very much appreciate the effort.

IMO the plan is to surround a quarterback who will be cheap to pay for the next few years with the players who can help him make a Super Bowl run. Notice the nucleus of good players is young, signed for the next three to four years, and is at important support positions around the QB.

IMO, Ireland has sat back and waited for his time. When he took the job, he essentially rode Bill Parcells's coat tails so he could get his foot in the door. I think it is pretty clear that Jeff did not have final say with Parcells around, and while I can't really prove anything with this statement, I do feel that Ireland has never been 100% on board with Parcells's overall philosophy. IMO, he used Parcells to advance his career. To be honest with you, Jeff may have been better off trying to make his name away from Parcells. Either way, Jeff did not get his choice of head coach when they started this process. I think Jeff went into the interview process with the intent on identifying the best candidate, while Parcells wanted to put on a show before he hired his hand picked guy in Tony Sparano. I remember at the time that there was buzz that Jeff was actually more impressed with Leslie Frazier out of all the candidates that were interviewed and would have hired him had he had the power to make that decision.

I also know that Jeff has been very interested in players that didn't fit the Parcells prototype when Bill was around. Players such as Percy Harvin and Dexter McCluster, plus even though Pat White was a Parcells "Fat Cat", I think Jeff is the guy that has been pushing for the dual threat quarterback behind the scenes.

Why do I get into it in every post? Some of you defend Austin so much he might as well be your mother. Look, please, for any possible future post, Austin has a very special ability unlike everyone else in this draft or on our team.

You are absolutely correct. But what team wants to go into a season without a possession receiver? Who will they throw it to when they call the worst play in football, the goalie jump ball.

Come on my friend, you'd rather have 2 show stoppers and no sure hands ( not that eifert is sure hands or that Austin is not)?

This "what could be" factor has clouded the mind of the lot you. This is for all of the posters- Austin is a luxury. Whomever can't come to terms with that FACT, have a coke and a smile and (those of you who know stand up know the rest). Hey, he's a luxury I'd love to have so please get off of my back as if I hated the guy or dont know or respect the ability. He's not critical. Not even a little. Not to this dolphin team. Not anymore. If you can't admit to that, I don't know what to tell you.

What's critical is the tall tight end who can snag the ball out of the air down the middle and be a red zone threat for a developing QB with relatively little experience at his position.

Brian Hartline and Brandon Gibson, the guy who led the NFL in 3rd down & TD conversion%, say hello.

They rest of your post I'll continue to disagree with as the outside the box thinking mentality argues Tavon is definitely more than a luxury, and he functionally serves to maximize the $60 million we just dumped into Wallace which heavily contradicts your "He's not even a little critical" theory.

Leslie Frazier... How cool would hat have been? I lean more towards Le Batard's opinion of a head coach, he just not that important. Whether that is true or not, I have no idea. All I know is my little league coach didn't teach me to be a home run champ. I could just hit the ball.

That scares me a lot that you think that about Ireland. I don't agree with this new football philosophy at all and kapernick(?) did everything except win to put an exclamation point on this new age. It doesn't matter much any more. No matter how you cut it, he has 2 years left. Just my opinion but I think it's one that makes sense. If by this this time next year we're not talking about who we don't want to see in the playoffs, the following year we'll be arguing about our new gm.

But isn't the 60 mil we "dumped" (come on brotha get a better word at least be a little positive) the exact thing that heavily contradicts your heavy contradiction?

Don't know if your making fun of me or not but yes I agree with you... I think. Rofl I'm buzzed at he moment so it's all good.

I really don't know how we justify going offensive weapon in this draft after the free agency that we've had which is what blows my mind about people's opinion on Austin. I'm not that smart and I think it's pretty smart to consider that we shouldn't consider an offensive weapon with our first pick in the daft but then again I just admitted to not being that smart.

Any way, it's a fun time and what's great about it is that we're definitely seeing an anything goes Ireland.

Not necessarily b/c you can also read it as Ireland is serious about upgrading the receiving corps, so in that regard why would he stop short of addressing the slot (the position that could see the most targets) when there's an explosive Xfactor available? Plus the reduced rookie salary makes Tavon affordable.

Not even remotely close to a crazy standpoint. Like I said, it's an interesting time to be a fan. It should be considered crazy, though. Unless I've missed some piece of news this weekend, we don't have a freagin left tackle, Phins. We're talkin blind side here.

I haven't seem much of lane Johnson but from what I have seen, I really like the guy- a lot. Take a look at some of the stuff on YouTube. It doesn't do him justice IMO but it gets the point across.

The thing is, as much as I ***** about needs much more important than Austin, i am not going to enjoy this draft if we go oline or even de on this pick. Werner(sp?) looks like there's not a rocky in the world to avenge their friend on ths man but I'm just not going to enjoy it.

I don't know that there's a star in this draft. I knew Calvin Johnson when I saw him. I knew Peterson when I saw him. I can't see a star in this draft which means I can't see a lack of a star quality either. Listen, you didn't have to be a guru to know we messed (bcuz i cant curse) up big time with Jason Allen. Even, especially the layman, was like "who? What? Who?" I really don't know what a hit or miss will look like in this draft but what makes sense to draft isn't what I'm excited to see. And I get bashed on Austin... As if that doesn't make my nips hard. Just don't think it makes sense. Am I so off?

It would depend on my other options.

For example Austin or Patterson at 12 while using the 2A on a corner, followed by a RT with our 2B would be more appealing to me than a lot of other options.

In my opinion our WR crew is still nowhere close to where it should be. I'd especially like Patterson because he could eventually push Hartline out of the #2 spot.

i just fist bumped all your posts, thank you.. People masterbate to Austin likes he's the greatest thing to come out of college ever. Honestly, we have bess and there will probably be another, short, laterally quick, "tavon Austin" next year. I think we have done enough with our receiving core for now, possibly add another later in the draft... And before someone jumps my bones in regards to who I've stated my man crush is this year in the draft, I can give you 7 picks I would not mind having at 12

I guess that depends on how much you like Hartline. Personally I don't think anything of him as as a WR and see Mike Wallace as our ONLY offensive weapon aside from Keller.
