I have to laugh at the amateur psycho analysis that goes on in this place.

I don't see any validity in your reasoning for what Ireland is thinking. I think you're jumping to unreasonable conclusions. It is well documented that Harvin was an Ireland target and Austin is a very Harvin like talent.

Nothing to do with psycho analysis.

Only to do with how he has actually drafted and approached free agency in the past (I don't subscribe to the "Parcell made me do it" thinking that many others do).

I certainly hope I'm wrong! I just think that's how he is. I think he will think, "This is the position we will need - and can't afford to go with a kid like Austin."

I love Austin and would flip out if we drafted him (although it certainly is possible teams will get hyped about him and his stock will rise as the draft nears such that he'll go in the top 8-10).

Signing Mike Wallace was not a Parcells type of move. Also, Parcells would have focused on retaining Jake Long. I think it is very clear that as long as Parcells was around, the team would be built according to his vision.

Perhaps we're feigning interest in Austin, Patterson, and maybe Vaccaro as well to bait another team to bypass us for them, effectively pushing an extra top 11 player down to us that we might have more interest in. I think the interest in Austin is legit but if I were to make an argument against it that'd be it.

I thought the two most interesting things from that segment were:

    1. Seeing one of our coaches coaching up Tavon at his pro day.

    2. Charlie Casserly's Adolf Hitler look.

Also, this Ireland mind set of rigidity......I don't buy it. In terms of offensive linemen, Pouncey is a very sexy pick. A PULLING CENTER! If that isn't s statement of intent about your offense, then I don't know what is. And then he took a QB. 8th overall.

He's being tarred with Parcell's brush and say what you like about Ireland but it's not right.

There's nothing to subscribe to with Parcells. There is only fact. Fact is, Parcells valued different types of players and positions than Philbin does. Take WR as an example. Parcells likes big possession receivers. Always has. Ireland follows blueprints. He used to follow Parcells blueprint and is now following Philbins. That is fact.

Even without that, there's no discernible pattern in how Ireland has attacked FA or the draft. Especially, when you factor in the FA period we are currently in.

Running this up the flag pole to see if it flies.........

Maybe the Dolphins do try to move up...but to get Austin.

Greg Cossell believes Austin won't make it out of the Top 10 with Chip Kelly in Philly and Chud in Cleveland.

I notice the guy doing the #MockFour draft did exactly that, traded up to #8 with the Bills to pick Milliner when he was still available there. Gave up #82 to make the trade. I don't see it myself, and would rather we picked up a couple of the numerous talented corners that are going to be available when we pick in the 2nd/3rd rounds.

Just watched the segment. Isn't that Phil McGeoghan working with Austin in the clip?

Charlie Casserly looks awful with whatever he's got going on.

Cant believe either of those two are seriously considering taking Austin, the Eagles have massive holes on both lines and this is a draft to help them, Fisher or Jordan if he gets to 4 makes a lot of sense. The Browns are more likely to go defense as well i'd of thought, i'm not sold on all the Milliner talk with them but maybe a Sheldon Richardson to help with their transition to a 3-4.

I think the main threat to us taking Austin at 12 (assuming that's the way we want to go) is people looking to jump ahead of us, the Steelers and Rams are logical landing points for him and both have picks not too far away.

I agree. IMO, Ireland hooked up with Parcells to advance his career, not because he followed his philosophy lock, stock, and barrel.

Ireland recently said in an interview that within 5 minutes, he knew Joe Philbin shared his vision for the football team when he was going through the interview process. If that tells you anything.

Absolutely. You work for a boss that wants you to draft certain types of players and takes players off your board if they don't fit certain criteria. You also are getting players for a different system than you have now. These are facts. The idea that a GM in such a position must not have it in his nature to think any other way that's the fiction that's being ascribed here. He may or may not think a certain way, but basing it on picks made in those circumstances is really baseless.

Maybe so ... Honestly - I'd be very happy to be wrong. But, I am not as sure as you are that the jury is not still out on Ireland (whom I also like as a person and think the whole Dez Bryant stuff, was terribly one sided against him - esp. if the "context" later indicated was to be believed). Not trying to bash him. Just still wondering ...

And, after nearly 30 years of disappointment, I am still pessimistic, though I do have high hopes for what Philbin will bring (of course, this has helped, when my expectations about the Dolphins are low - and they surprise - I'm quite elated! :) ).

Amen. I've been preaching this for over a year now.

Its why i couldn't accurately judge Ireland and won't be until the end of this coming season. The differences between this offseason and the last two compared to the first three are night and day in types of players acquired...and I'm football stupid and can see it.

Not at all, the last draft that Ireland was credited with taking while Parcells was here consisted of:

    -Vontae Davis
-Pat White (who is largely on Dan Henning's clout)
-Traded back and took Sean Smith
    -Pat Turner
    -Brian Hartline
    -John Nalbone
    -Andrew Gardner
    --JD Folsom

Basically, he doubled up on Cb and Wr w/picks that mattered

    Took VD over:
    Hakeem Nicks
    Kenny Britt

He took Wr's later and hit on one, rather than using the #1 on a Wr and hoping to find the Cb later on.

I won't redetail the passing on more explosive players for more blue collar types in 2010 and 2011

You are asking for explosive players from an era where Ireland followed Parcells blueprint. Parcells hated explosive players.

I was watching this one. It's like 7:30 long, but the stuff about Tavon Austin is in the last few minutes. They showed a snippet from his Pro Day and I'm pretty sure Phil McGeoghan is talking with him.

MrClean, that might be a different video then. This one clearly isn't Philbin.

    And, well, Charlie Casserly...yikes.

That's definitely McGeoghan, they are doing their due diligence for sure. I just keep dreaming that John Jerry loses a bunch of weight and is swung out to RT, freeing us up to stand pat and pick up another position at 12.

IMO, this is more than due diligence. Bringing in Geno Smith and Ryan Nassib is due diligence. The interest level in Tavon Austin is serious.

I highly doubt the Dolphins spend this high of a pick on a right tackle. They drafted Jonathan Martin last year with the intention that he was going to take over for Jake Long at left tackle. That may not make some feel easy, but the guy is going to get the opportunity to improve. I also think they like Will Yeatman's potential at right tackle and will likely sign someone like Eric Winston to bridge to him when Winston comes down to the Dolphins asking price.

At this stage the favorite for the pick has to be Austin, he's the one there's the most buzz on and the one that makes the most sense when you consider what Philbin wants for his offense and how we reportedly fell in love with Harvin. They could trade up to get a LT but that would really shut the door on Martin who is not a long term RT, and to be honest one season is not long enough to make that a smart decision. The interest in Winston is also an indicator that they'd prefer to sort out the line in free agency and leave the draft for the best player available.

I don't see us falling in love with Rhodes the way some drafts do, he looks a good corner and our situation there is dire but i think we're more likely to go with Grimes and draft someone later though i wouldn't be as upset as some if he was the choice. People forget just how much the cb play dragged our defense down last season imo.

IMO there is a small chance that Smith or Nassib make it to the 3rd round. If they are in the 3rd round, why not take them? The chance might be small, however it is better to bring them in just in case, instead of not bringining them in.

Agreed. I see this recent quote from Ireland as an indicator that we're not finished with the WR position and that we'll address it in the draft.

"I like the receiver position as it is building up right now, and we still have the draft to go," Ireland said.

    http://www.sun-sentinel.com/sports/...t-expensive-positions-20130327,0,262439.story

The term about "building" clearly indicates that he's not done and the reference to draft implies that's where the additional work will be done. Obviously that doesn't guarantee we're targeting Austin. It could easily be about Swope or Bailey. Ireland personally saw both Austin and Bailey play multiple times. I don't think that can be dismissed. And obviously Swope has all those connections with RT, Sherman and our system. The above doesn't guarantee which players we're targeting, but I do think it should negate the argument that our salary cap expenditure at the WR position means that we're done there.

At cornerback, I think they are looking for a player that can play off coverage and has the ability to read the play and make a jump on the ball in front of them. This was Sean Smith's biggest problem.

I'm with you completely i'm just sick of hearing that our scheme doesn't require talented corners, it does they just need to have different skills to press man. Frankly the corners we have at the moment aren't good enough to play in any scheme with the possible exception of Patterson as an overpaid slot guy.

In terms of draft corners i think Banks has got to be worth a look in the 2nd despite his 40 time, the guy can read plays and react as well and go up and get the ball when its needed. The best zone corner in the draft may well be Trufant (though Rhodes and Milliner are both better prospects overall), but i think 12 is much too high for him and he wont get into the 2nd.

I agree. That's exactly what they're looking for. They want instinctive, smart players above all. Players who play off coverage don't tend to be drafted as high as press corners. That's why we don't need to reach for CB high. There will be undervalued players that will be able to do what we need available later.

uggg, you don't listen very well. It was still Parcells' blueprint for players to fit Sparano's team & Henning's offense. No matter who was running the draft room, the entire draft process/strategy/philosophy was set up to adhere to Parcells' vision. IE: WAS NOT IRELAND'S.

We took Davis b/c a) Ireland's preferred choice, Percy Harvin, was gone and b/c b) we HAD to have a starting corner. White was mostly on Parcells' shoulders, as was Nalbone BTW. Ireland also stated something to the affect of Pat Turner was predetermined to be taken in the 3rd round. That sounds eerily like a Parcells' type move, just as he did it with White & Nalbone.

Given what happened with Ellerbe and Wheeler, as much as I'd like Tavon, I think the interest, whilst genuine, might be something of a smokescreen for their true target. Dunno who that is, but I suspect there's more to all this than meets the eye.

We need an opposite end pass rusher, two or three corners, another safety prospect, a tackle and a guard. Another defensive tackle and middle linebacker wouldn't hurt either.

I'm as confident as a couch potato can be saying that we are NOT drafting Tavon Austin at 12.

Essentially I heard from two separate sources that everyone in the Dolphins building is talking about Tavon Austin...and they don't seem to mind who knows it. Literally, heard exactly that, both parts, from two different unrelated sources.
