What if we didn't draft Tannehill and instead signed Kevin Kolb as many on this board screamed for. What if? Where would be headed? I remember when people on this board where screaming about Kevin Kolb touring NFL clubs including the Miami Dolphins before being signed elsewhere. Some where pissed off and screaming for Ireland's head. The money was way over what he should have been offered and ole Jeff stood his ground. Seems maybe Jeff Ireland knew more then most given Kevin Kolb could find himself very quickly out of the NFL or at best warming the pine for a fraction of his hype money!!!! At the time of the signing, Kolb's contract was advertised as a "maximum" of $12 million to $13 million over two years. In reality, Kolb is guaranteed just $1 million. The difference is tied up in incentives and bonuses that will kick in only if Kolb does indeed win out as the starter -- and plays well. http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap10...kolbs-contract-reportedly-spells-bills-backup
This "What If" is a bit off base because the choice almost certainly would have been Kevin Kolb vs. Chad Henne. If we were interested in Kolb, based on his salary, we wouldn't have been looking at drafting a quarterback high and Tannehill would not have been involved at all. This is all compounded by the fact that Kolb was traded in 2011 and the conversation here would have been more Kolb vs. Mallet.
Every time there is a QB decision in the NFL, there are fans on both sides of the fence. No matter what happens, there is someone that can say, 'I told you so.' Kolb, Tannehill, Culpepper, Brees, Henne, blah, blah, blah. The Phins were (maybe still are) way overdue to find a franchise QB. I think they have. I could be wrong. Not to poo-poo on your post, because I totally feel ya, bro. But... I'm gonna move on.
Lot of revisionist history here. You make it sound like the majority of this board was clamoring for Kevin Kolb. Most were very lukewarm on him and saw him as a repeat of A.J. Feely. Same with Kyle Orton. Yeah people viewed him as an upgrade to Henne, but very few saw him as a long term solution to the position. Matt Flynn, also a similar story except fans saw a little more upside there. But clamoring? Nah. Peyton Manning? That's a different story. Fans were clamoring for him as well they should have been.
I'd love too see the statistical breakdown of Phins.com posters who wanted Kolb and who didnt. Guessing about 2 out of 10 people round here truely WANTED Kolb, obviously I wasn't one of them. Andy Reid already made our organization look stupid once.
Manning is special. IMO there are only a handful like him. Just got done watching a recap of his season last yr. Career high numbers. Denver has a legitimate shot at a title this yr.
Exactly what I was suggesting. If we would have went the Kolb way, Henne would have stayed, a compitition would have happened and we would not have drafted Tannehill. Is Tannehill a franchise QB? Maybe. Just pointing out, we could have been heading into this draft needing a QB which is pretty QB weak. This decision to stay away from the initial hype was a good decision. Coodoos to Jeff Ireland and thank god we have Tanne!!!
OR... Kolb could've led us to 0-16 and we could've selected Luck last year. Damn. Should've paid the man.
I'm no soothsayer, but I was never on the Kolb bandwagon....ever. Just another overrated Reid qb. But I'm glad we're where we are, even if we don't know for sure about Tanny....
I was really shocked at how quick he fell from a potential starting position. Kolb could find himself out of the league if not careful.
I'm still wondering why Manning, a southern guy with a long career thriving for an indoor team, chose Denver, where success in the regular season means playoff games with frozen hands and terrible conditions for a passer. I don't think the weather in Denver helped him a lot against Baltimore.
Elway is a car salesman now; he did a pretty good job selling Manning on cold weather playoff games, apparently.
And, in related news....If my Aunt had balls, she'd be my uncle..... Hell, if we had just picked Tammy Buttchin in the 5th, we would've been set for the last decade......
Where is the evidence that Tannehill will ever be any better than Kolb? I didn't want Kolb personally, but Christ, you make it sound like Ryan Tannehill's success is a done deal. The guy played like a typical rookie last year, and while sure we're all hopeful and expecting that to improve in the future, there's no guarantee it will. Let's talk about how the Kolb talk was such a tremendous mistake once Tannehill makes good on his potential, not beforehand. My lord.
Fixed it for you. True story. A friend landscaped Johnny Overthrow's house in Denver. Said that JE was one of the biggest A-holes he has ever met. The guy was just an arrogant A-hole. One of the worse Human Beings he has ever met.....and that is saying something cause he knows me
I'm not saying you aren't right Travis, and I honestly think and have always thought Kolb was just a flash in the pan...but what exactly are you referring to in regards to Tanny? The one GLARING number (Ratio actually) I see makes me think of a very underwhelming QB that plays for a division Rival. Of course, one year, his Freshman year, is not fair to pass judgement...but I am honestly asking what you see in him?
You can play what if all day. What if the Dolphins drafted Kaepernick in 2011? What if the Dolphins had decided to sign Brees instead of Culpepper? What if someone in the Dolphins front office had been smart enough to draft Rogers in the first round? Last but not least, what if Ireland and Parcells had decided to draft Matt Ryan instead of Jake Long in 2008? Every year you can always look back to see how any NFL team could have done a better job in player selection. While interesting to speculate what might have been, it really doesn't change the fact that Tannehill is now the QB of the Dolphins and we are still waiting to see if he can develop into a quality QB in the NFL. Hopefully he will turn out to be a better QB for the Dolphins than Kolb will be for the Bills.
It appears Kolb went from guaranteed decent money 3-4 mill a year to crap with one of the worst teams in the NFL. A million dollars guaranteed isnt crap in the NFL. It is just a interesting look at what could have been. No Jab at Tannehill or anything. Also a reminder we are not out of the water so to speak. I hope and pray Tanne does well this year. If we get a #1 receiver, it could very possibly mean going from the middle of the pack to top 8, and then we matter. Personally I hope they get Allen, not super fast, but Miami becomes a beast in the east if he teams up with Tannehill.
Look, he's just another guy, or so it appears...He's had chances to shine and has either gotten injured or just didn't live up to the hype... That's what I saw three years ago in Philly and what I see today... Either way, I'm still glad we're where we are....isn't it nice to go into a draft and NOT talking about QB ?? First time since the day the music died....(Marino retired)...
Just think, we could have had Brady Quinn and all of our trouble would have been resolved,....or maybe not.
with you on that. Saw the 94 jets dolphins highlights last night, man Marino was special. Damn it, if only I could reincarnate him. The plays that he made were absolutely amazing. Just watching that shuffle step that drove defenses crazy, made me want to see more. Hard to believe it was 14 years ago already, wow did I just type that??
a little. It was more any Qb that became available. From Kolb to Cassell and Jay Cutler. I think a lot of folks would have taken just about anybody. I am not down on Tannehill, I just hope if he doesn't improve we as fans do not become complacent, and demand excellence. I am just so tired of the mediocre teams we seem to put together.
It is not all women's tennis players. It was Serena alone, now it's her with Venus. Two does not equal all. I happen to be quite fond of the Williams sisters. If their image is offensive to you, I suppose I could remove it.... Then again, maybe not...
