What is he smoking, time to pass. http://sports.yahoo.com/news/report-ot-albert-wants-50-143134012--nfl.html Negotiations between the Kansas City Chiefs and Miami Dolphins, who have interest in offensive tackle Branden Albert, hit a major snag when Albert's contract demands caught the Dolphins off guard. Albert, 28, reportedly has asked for a deal in line with Houston Texans' left tackle Duane Brown (six years, $53 million).
He can go find his "market value" elsewhere...or wait he has no other interest, so he can't. So how would that be his market value?
The Chargers are highly interested and willing to pay KC both a higher 2nd round pick and give Albert his deal.
And you know he has no other interested parties how? Because ESPN hasn't reported anyone but the dolphins yet.
You're possibly right, he may have other interest that hasn't been reported anywhere. But my gut feeling is he isn't getting that asking price, mostly because it's including a pick too. I could be totally wrong, time will tell.
They did that with the (correct) highly educated guess that McNabb was on a downward arc and about to fall apart. If KC is doing the same thing, all the more reason to pass.
Probably not far off his value, but higher than I would have thought he would ask for. Just another sign to me that points to us trading up, and taking an OT. LT is too valuable of a postion to Mr. Ireland (and I'd imagine Philbin also) to not take one of the top guys early, even if that means trading up.
If that is the case the Fins should trade a 3rd round pick for him and sign him… then trade him to the chargers for their 2nd… lol
I don't think he is really worried about his market value this season. He is the Chiefs, "franchise player" and he is already set to make nearly 10 million dollars this season. Albert will have plenty of interest from other teams after this coming season when he will once again be a free agent and no team will have to give the Chiefs a draft pick to sign him. I think that with the 9.8 million dollars he is scheduled to make this year, along with any contract he will sign with a new team after this season, he will easily end up making at least $50 million dollars over the next six years. If the Dolphins don't want to trade a draft pick to get him this season. I am sure another team will be happy to sign him after this coming season to a large contract when they won't have to give up anything for him.
Actually, if that's the market he's looking for, I hope the Chargers give it to him...anyone but us...
The more he wants in a contract, the less draft pick value he has to me. Only way I trade for him now is if its a deal for the value he wants with heavy injury protection and no more than a 4th rounder. Otherwise he can meet the San Diego media as the latest Charger acquisition.
No need to spend draft picks and offer a fat contract when we can trade up and get a player as good if not better for much less. Make a lukewarm and let them take it or leave it. The market for Albert, whatever it may be, will be significantly smaller come Thursday so the pressure is on KC not us.
I think Branden Albert is a good player. I'm just not sold on the fact that you need a Top 10 LT to be a really good football team. If Tannehill improves his pocket presence and runs a little more, then we're OK. Will there be more sacks? Sure. But, I'm just not willing to give up 54 and money to get him, when I'm fine seeing how Jonathon Martin performs over the course of a year first.
We'd have to spend 3 different high round picks to move up for a player who could be a bust or no better than Albert. That's crazy to me. Albert is a sure thing and won't cost us the opportunity to get other needed talent. The money can be finagled creatively while the lack of picks moving up would cause, cannot. Money and picks are both ultimately opportunity costs. The difference is there's way more flexibility with money than there is losing picks. You're basically saying you'd rather draft a top 3 OT and lose out on anyone we can grab at 12, top of 2 and top of 3, instead of Albert, #12 and top of 3.
Big difference. McNabb was going to make the Redskins worse and andy Reid knew it. Albert is actually a good player with his career ahead of him. Sent from my SPH-L710 using Tapatalk 2
Just wait until after Thursday. One of the top guys could land in our lap. KC will be more desperate then too.
Maybe I'm in the minority but I don't think his asking price is all that ridiculous. Maybe a tiny bit less, any more that you could shave off and it would be a no brainer to me... Trade 3 high/valuable picks for a question mark? Ehhh.... Load up his contract and work out the guaranteed money to reflect a test year. Would be a smart move.
It never ceases to amaze me how little most people would fork over for a proven commodity and how much they value an unknown commodity.
Money is way less important in the NFL than picks now that there's a rookie scale. People act like all this money for a proven vet is bad but the opportunity to get 2 more impact players on rookie wages makes less financial sense.
I'm on lovers Lane but not for that price. If we're that desperate for a tackle and can't trade down, reach for Fluker at 12 and pray Martin will succeed at his "natural" position. Albert's price is too high. If I'd think we can make a Super Bowl in 2 years, I'd seal the deal. We would need a miraculous first 2 days in this draft to be looking at a Super Bowl in 2 years. ***most I'd give up to move up is a 2 this year and a late rounder next year.***
not my money. I don't care. pay the man. draft eifert or austin. win games. let me gloat over fans of other teams.
Its the going price for Top 10 left tackles. What is your criteria for thinking that is too much money? Also, why draft Fluker to be a RT, when you can draft anyone else available #12 and sign Winston, a proven top 5 RT?
whatever, you get the point McNabb was as good as done, Albert still has some good football left in him
I have to congratulate the Chiefs for identifying a LT prospect out of a college G .NFL Draft: 2008 / Round: 1 / Pick: 15 .Why cant we do that .Why cant we identify a RT or a G who can be converted to LT .It seems like this is an economic way to find a LT. This was quite a common practice a dozen years or so ago .You would get your best 5 OL and plug them in to positions and let them develop at those positions. In todays game that would not happen after you try an OL in the LT position they dont want to try another position because of the differential of the contract amounts.
That we've spent a boat load of it already and while I am a believer in "the today and now heavens know if I will wake tomorrow" faith, if I do wake tomorrow ( meaning future), I may wake to a franchise starting all over again and is as broke as I am. Albert's talent at his prime, yeah, worth what any one else is getting. Worth it for us? Debatable. But I'm on board with the most truest line I have read today, "it's not my money." Good questions. Why not? If they are that desperate for a tackle in the draft I should have said.
That might actually work to our benefit. If SD gets their LT via a trade with KC, it betters our chance of landing Lane Johnson at #12 IMO.
Here's the kicker: It only happens when it involves a pick, too. When we signed Ellerbe to a 35 million contract, by and large it was considered a fine idea - even though Ellerbe has yet to play a full NFL season. Throw in a 2nd round selection, and 50 million dollars for a top left tackle inexplicably become too much money.
