    Awful.

On a historic day, where Jason Collins becomes the first active player in the big 4 sports to come out, Mike Wallace bashes him for doing so.

    FML.

This should not be in the rants forum.. In this day in age that level of ignorance should be called out and discussed. Not relegated to the back pages of the forum.

Hey, whaddya want? I will guarantee you that there are more people out there that have that reaction than think "Oh, that's great!" when they read the Jason Collins story. As long as he doesn't get in legal trouble, I don't care if he's an @$$hole.

This isn't Pittsburgh anymore. Wallace represents a city with a diverse landscape and needs to modify his behavior to reflect that.

Chill all of you. That comment wasn't bashing, and i cannot fathom how someone would interpret what he twitted as bashing.

That comment is a perfect example of how someone who is straight would feel about a homosexual. There was no hate, in there. He just cannot imagine how a guy can feel that way about another guy. Perfectly understandable for a straight man.

Yep, it's like the line from Victor Victoria when the women tells the gay man "..all you need is a good woman in your life.." to which he replies "..and I would say the same to you madam.."

EXACTLY. I'm a proponent of marriage equality. I don't see any reason why someone should be against it, but people are. They have just as much right to an opinion as I do, whether it's favorable or un-favorable. Conversely, Kobe Bryant supports gay marriage, but think of all the people, owners, agents, players, etc etc that aren't are thinking the same thing that many other people are - he's an idiot for positing his opinion.

I just think if that's his opinion, then that's his opinion. Jason Collins even admits that some people won't agree, that's their right. God Bless America. This is a non-issue in my opinion.

So, you think he should change his opinions to suit the opinions of a percentage of the people of Miami?

He doesn't need to change his opinion because he plays for another team. What he said was not bigoted. He didn't bash anyone. He just doesn't agree with it.

I can already tell this is going to be blown out of proportion.

Bill Burr did a bit about that where he was in a diner with a friend, turned and saw two men making out and had an "ugh" reaction and his friend called him homophobic. He responded by saying it wasn't homophobic, just not something he finds appealing, and that if a gay man turned his head and saw a vagina in front of him he'd have the same reaction.

The man is entitled to his preference and opinion, whether we agree with it or not.

Look. I didnt choose to be gay. It happened. If Wallace had said "I cant understand why people choose to be Jewish" would anyone be defending him? No.

So stop it. It is bigoted.

No he doesn't. He needs to play hard to earn his contract, while setting an example in the community by not getting in trouble, helping people, etc. His opinion is his opinion. Now, he's a big boy and has to deal with the heat of what he says, but as long as he's not blasting hate or ridiculous things, he's fine. And as someone who believes in marriage equality, what he said wasn't hate, it was merely an opinion.

Agreed. And those of you who think it's appropriate for Wallace to be expressing the opinion on TWITTER that homosexuality is something that should prompt a "head shake" are really out of touch. This will rightfully receive a lot of very negative media attention.

Putting aside whether Wallace is entitled to his own opinion, dumb as it may be, it is an incredibly stupid thing to tweet or otherwise express publically.

As if anyone cared what Mike Wallace had to say on this subject.

I am amazed at the depth to which people will reach to defend the "politically correct" trend of today.

The reaction here is staggering. Calling Wallace a douchebag, idiot, ignorant, etc; i'm just baffled.

If he would have twitted insults, i would understand the reaction, but he said no such thing. His twit is the exact reaction of a straight man to a homosexual, which is inability to understand how a man can love another man that way. He did not insult Collins.

It's crazy how far away we've gotten from what our country was built upon. The freedom to choose and express. I didn't think it was hateful at all. While I'm not an idiot, I imagine he has plenty of ignorance to the subject. However, he's free to have that opinion - just you do as a Democrat or Republic, for or against abortion, etc etc I don't agree with him, but I'm not upset at him expressing his opinion and it being different than mine. Not at all.

He tried to clarify with a second tweet 5 minutes later, and then deleted both tweets. Probably because someone let him know that his insensitivity probably wasn't the best thing to put on display.

He didn't say anything negative about gays or about being gay. Just said that he can't relate, which is perfectly understandable. I can't relate to anyone choosing to root for the Jets, but that doesn't mean I hate all Jets fans...

Why would that be offensive? I have my own religious beliefs, and can't relate to those that have a different one than mine. But that doesn't mean I hate people that dont share my religious beliefs.

Defending players, coaches, etc for poor performance based on homerism is one thing. But to defend bigotry out of homerism is sad. Some of you really need to put this in the right perspective. It is a bigoted viewpoint. And it's also incredibly stupid given the sensitivity of the topic.
