I liked how he said PIT didn't want Wallace. As if the contract that Antonio Brown accepted wasn't first offered to MW  He's drowning, not swimming.

Wow. A lot of you guys need to settle down, you are allowed to have a negative opinion about this team and have that opinion still be valid.

With that being said, Evans was mostly lukewarm regarding his opinions of this team, but he makes some interesting points.

First off, about the Dion Jordan pick, I'm not sure Evans or anybody but the coaching staff and especially Kevin Coyle know how Dion Jordan will be used this year given the fact that he cannot use the weight room due to the rehabilitation of his shoulder. Will he be staying at 245 when he healths up? Who knows. Evans doesn't, but we don't really know either. Dion Jordan is very athletic and is expected to do great things here in Miami, but he's just like any other draft pick in that only time will tell if he's going to live up to the expectations of being taken #3 overall.

The Mike Wallace discussion.. ehhh.. he talks about the Steeler way essentially and how Mike Tomlin operates, compares him to Santonio Holmes, but Mike Tomlin himself said a couple months ago that Mike Wallace is a good team guy. Other than that, he makes some fair points, points that posters like KB had been discussing before free agency started a couple months ago when he got into the route-running of Jennings versus Wallace. It is a knock against Wallace and is probably pretty legitimate. Will it damage the team? It might, but could Wallace's speed overall benefit the team in tremendous ways as well? It works both ways.

The Dannell Ellerbe for Karlos Dansby issue I agree with him on. You knew what you had with Dansby, you don't with Ellerbe, but you don't win in this league without taking risks. Evans could be homering a bit here considering both him and Dansby are Auburn guys, and because Dansby was a solid and consistent inside linebacker but NO WHERE NEAR the light in which Evans described him in this interview. Also thought it was interesting that he kept harping the Belicheck and Tomlin way but if Dansby had ran his mouth against those two coaches like he did to Philbin on that one radio interview, regarding the release of Ochocinco, he'd of been out the door in no time.

He remarks that the Pats can be beaten if you can match up man-to-man, but this is also contradictory. The Patriots' strengths are their tight ends, we have had good coverage linebackers in Burnett and Dansby, and now hopefully Ellerbe and Wheeler, but it might just be time to admit that their QB is really good and is probably going into the Hall of Fame at some point and that you might just need to play soundly all over the defensive side of the ball to defeat them. What? Oh, he's a sure-fire first ballot hall of famer? Ok then. I don't think there's a "trick" to beating the Patriots, you just have to be disciplined, and sound from the front back through the secondary.

There's a lot of question marks in regards to the changes that have been made this offseason, but any one of them could fall either way. It's alright to really like your team, but it's one thing to blind yourself to the potential negatives that your team may show throughout the regular season. "Cautiously optimistic."

what he said was Brady is not affected by pressure from the side and you have to get him from the middle and also that Brady wasn't bothered by Wake.

Jeff Ireland, respect him or not, the man had to retool this team, if you hadn't noticed it went 7 and 9 3 years strait, and he's got a new coach..he retooled the team with young players who have played well in their careers, and had good young experience, gotta respect the approach if anything.

Can we find negs and positives on every free agent signed by other teams, yes, but I don't think you can fu&$ with young talent he aquired.Grimes..Ellerbe..Wallace..Keller..Clabo...Wheeler..come on man, he had the best free agency pull out of the league..

Evans comments took nothing into account as it pertains to our team, not the salary cap, not the new coach's vision, not the production of the players that were here, not Parcells, not the needs we had, not that we are the youngest team in the league.

Yeah actually I'm pretty sure that's exactly what he was saying, that the Dolphins need to focus on getting more push up the middle with the DTs. And no that's not ridiculous.

LOL, let me get this straight. You want "stats or proof" that Dansby is as fast as Ellerbe, but you don't want a 40 time. In other words, you don't actually want "stats or proof", you just want to consider yourself right by default even if presented evidence hat you're not?

I believe this is an incorrect recounting of what Heath said. He was SPECIFICALLY ASKED whether his disapproval of the pick was because Dion Jordan wasn't who the Dolphins needed, or because Dion Jordan is Dion Jordan. His EXACT response was, "both".

It only discredits the majority of the opinions if you were inclined to disagree with them anyway and you're looking for an excuse to discredit and disregard them. Otherwise, from a purely objective standpoint, you should be able to recognize he had a plausible point but picked the wrong number out of the air for a bit of commonly used hyperbole.

You only believe this because it is convenient and comforts the part of you that wants to believe the Dolphins are awesome every year. You'll keep believing they're awesome every year. Statistically speaking, you'll be right one of these years. Eventually.

I guess you miss read me as well, thinking and wanting them to be great every year is different. I guess my hope gets crossed with your definition of homerism, You don't hear me tooting superbowls or playoffs for that matter..this year I've stated That 9 and 7 is an appropriate plane for this young of team, with this coach in his 2nd year, and all the other variables I take into account before I project anything..

The dude hated on our offseason, the whole thing, coincidentally I haven't heard anything good coming from your end, and to me to not find positives in the job that was done by the gm position, considering what needed to be done, and taking into account a fair platform for which the rebuild happened, and the other coaching variables, seems to lack some objective perspective..

I'm going through the interview point by point.

    - Dion Jordan is a reach. he's a liability because of his size. Doesn't care if he gives the team 18 sacks next year, because him being on the field for true football situations is scary.
I think he's forgetting that every time Jordan speaks he talks about getting bigger. i think he forgets that the new successful trend is having a lower weight athletic freak as a nickle DE. I think this comes down to stopping the run in his mind.

    - We paid too much for Hartline. Doesn't think anyone else was going to pay him that much.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not the biggest Hartline fan, but its not like we broke the bank for the guy.

    - Doesn't think anyone else wanted to pay Mike Wallace that much. Says basically if Wallace was worth it, the Steelers would have kept him. Uses Holmes as an example, points out that Holmes is "the biggest cancer in the NFL". Says Mike Wallace is not as bad as a cancer. Says Mike Wallace is more talented...probably.
Of course no one wanted to pay Wallace the same amount of money, that's how you when a bid...pay more than the other guy, DUH. The Steelers did want him back and tried. Many players leave their team. Long left, we wanted him back. A player leaving is not automatically about not wanting the player. This is the first real stupid thing he's said other than acting like 18 sacks is not only meaningless but not a part of real football plays.

    - Doesn't like the Ellerbee for Dansby switch. Says its the old school, Bill Belicheck in him that says this might be a nightmare.
I honestly don't know what the hell he's talking about here. It was pretty incoherent.

    - Jesse asks him to clarify about Jordan being a reach. is it because of Jordan's talent or because of the Dolphin's needs. He said both. He again mentions size and says on 3rd and 3 the other team will run. Says patriots had the highest percentage of runs on 3rd down.
Saying Jordan is a reach at 3 because of Jordan's ability is incredibly stupid. He was a near lock Top 5 draft pick across the board and was pretty much the number 1 rated defender across the board. I'll get to the rest after the next point....

    - Says you must build to beat the Pats. Says Dion is not the type of player that frustrates Brady, middle pressure is. Its what Baltimore consistently does to him.
Brady crumbles under pressure. It does not have to be middle pressure. When JT had another competent pass rusher opposite him Brady would get his *** handed to him. We were the original blueprint on how to stop Brady. Because of that his previous point and next point are just stupid. Brady can handle pressure from one place, but if it comes from each end or 1 end and the middle he has problems.....

    - Says his opinions are different but we didn't get better or get closer to beating the Pats with the Dion pick.
....This is ridiculous. You must do 2 things to stop the Pats, pressure Brady and stop the screen. Dion gives us a chance to do both in one player.

    - Says Ellerbee isn't middle pressure but then suggests that Dansby was because he was an amazing athlete. Says we know nothing about Ellerbee other than the super natural talent around him. Have a decade of knowns with Dansby and 9 starts on Ellerbee.
This is just stupid. Its not stupid to question the switch, its stupid to tout Dansby's athletic prowess when it comes to making big plays like sacks. The lack of big plays is a big reason he's gone. Here we go again saying "unknown = worse". That is and always will be a stupid and lazy point.

    - Brings up money. Says he talks to many GMs and they all say this Ireland being Ireland playing with Monopoly money.
This to me proves he has an agenda. Say what you want about Ireland being a horrible person or talent evaluator, but we've never been in cap hell since he's been here. We are in amazing cap situation this year and next even with all our FAs. This is really the stupidest point yet.

    - Wants to know if Wallace is an intangible guy. is he still learning to run routes. Praises Tannehill. Says Wallace's floor is as low as the ceiling is high. He'll cause your QB to throw INTs and is lazy in his routes. Pittsburgh organization says they cannot count on him in crunch time. He knows if Tomlin and Rooney were getting a dependable and clutch player, there's no way they'd let him get away.
We don't need clutch. We need TDs period. Our top WRs last year scored 2 Tds between them. 2. Gibson was the most clutch WR last year. Wallace just needs to score. His Tannehill praise felt like the equivalent to a spoonful of sugar to make the strychnine go down.

    - Says he's spent 10 years building relationships with Super Bowl winning GMs and the numbers don't add up.
Again, don't really know what in the hell he's talking about here. This was pretty nebulous.

    - Then goes into a long discussion about 2 TEs that can block or catch and how that traps defenses into their base formation.
This to me is the best part. He spends a decent amount of time talking about 2 TE sets and how they are dangerous because of what they do to the other teams defense, yet has spent the majority of the interview ****ting all over a player with the ability to counter the threat these TEs possess...Jordan.

    A few more things.

    - Jesse didn't really debate him much while he was on the phone. He picked apart many of his points afterwards. I don't fault Jesse for this as he was clearly annoyed by Evans but was professional as he should be. But he did not debate or really challenge him at all.

    - Much of the defense of Heath I've read in this thread is based on taking what Heath actually said and trying to re-interpret it in a way that's justifiable.

    - He basically starts off the interview saying he was fine with the our offseason until the Jordan pick, then spends the rest of the interview blasting the moves we made before the Jordan pick.

    - Some of his points were so bizarre that it clearly points to an agenda of some kind. I'm not saying that is a bias against Miami, cause I don't know, but it could be something like Skip Bayless-like where he likes to be controversial. Again, I don't know, but if its not something like that, then the man is just flat out ignorant.

Lastly, this has nothing to do with a person not liking the moves we made as some would suggest. This is about a person not liking the moves for many dumb reasons, some lazy reasons and a couple of just bizarre reasons.

We have good pressure up the middle with Starks, Solai and Odrick if he gets moved inside, but you need balance. You have to get pressure off the edge. That will also help free up the middle a bit. Pretty simple. It's not one or the other. JT and Ogunleye did pretty good from the outside. Brady is good with taking those couple of steps up to avoid the outside pressure, but you have to have good outside pressure as well as inside, so he has nowhere to go. The D wasn't balanced. That was clear. We definitely needed more pressure coming off the edge than just Wake.

I think I can decode some of that blather:

-"old school" Bruschi played inside for them for years, Dansby is a better athlete with no unknowns about his game, Ellerbe is a gamble.

Eh, can live with that, it's a fair point but outdated now

-"patriots run more then anyone on third down"

Now this is misguided, it is not as if they play power football, they spread the formation then hand the ball to a quicker Rb or to their big back but out of the spread formation you need someone who can have a chance to either cover, or make the play in the backfield or short of the first down, in his opinion that is not Jordan. When I watched Oregon's stuff with him, he had no problem doing that even when he tore his shoulder up vs Colorado.

-Mike Wallace, won't even bother with it, makes no mention of what Wallace will do for the offense, etc.

I heard a smaller version of the interview today and thought it was the entire thing, he at least admits his opinions are different, hell I base most of my opinions on being different. His problem is his were not based in reality save for Ellerbe and Dansby. Dansby was not a playmaker Ellerbe MAY be one, and he makes no mention of Wheeler for Burnett.

he picked the wrong number because he was coming from a place that didnt have objectivity, I mean who says " I don't care what he does, his liabilities in all football situations scares me "

Does Dion Jordan being on the field scare you as well?

"When I saw Gruden swallow a toad over not taking a left tackle at #3, I knew the game has passed him by"

Jordan played maybe 50% of defensive snaps, but like the old U teams, Oregon was loaded with talent they could afford to rotate him out.

Keep in mind Deej, the inside the NFL types are very very staid in their thinking and approach to the point when Kiper was asked about Wake his response was:

"..there are no draft do overs.."

Not going full blown Pat White here, as what I could not know was White was very very flakey, however when the man caught himself on fire, came back to play football, then tore his shoulder and played the rest of the year on it and did fine, we are not talking about a Flakey person here.

I've watched passrushing prospects for a long time, as just a passrusher he'd go top 5, add in forward and reverse gears and I'd easily take him over Orakpo or Miller or Kerrigan et al.

Man. CK...I get what you are saying but we could sit down in BW3 with wings and brew and you ain't gotta be a Dolphins fan or even a Dion Jordan fan to think a cat who's also drinking wings and brew went a lil too far. His point isn't different from a lot of folks who say Dion is light in the pants. But he just went a lil too far on those sack numbers. To me it said no matter his level of production his conclusion is likely already drawn. To me that's unfair and hardly objective. Again....nothing wrong with not liking Dion Jordan....but that cherry on top that he added makes people feel like his dislike is coming from a different place.

did you see his rant on day 2 of the draft when he was with Jamie Dukes (sigh) and they were asked what they thought about the pick (DJordin)? he went on a tirade about how bad our front office is and how bad all of our off season had been, I mean he was ranting and even stepped off the podium towards the camera in a clearly agitated state.. very clear and well thought out opinions indeed

Dang ner the whole premise is based on WWBBD (What Would Bill Bellichik Do). But then I dig deeper:

Then I go an review some of the guys the Patriots brought in for workouts/visits:
    - Jamar Taylor
    - Ezekial Ansah
    - Dion Jordan
    - Tank Carradine

So we are inline with BB on a couple of these guys and Heath Evans praised the Bill Bellichik way of playing football and how we deviate from that so much which makes our offseason suck so much. But then....in the draft we are looking at the same guys. Yeah...you can say smoke screen..but you don't visit with the 5 pass rushers and draft the 2nd lightest in the pats in Jamie Collins.

But somehow....we are off the reservation in our thinking....

Don't get me wrong I agree with you that he picked the wrong number. He was trying to use hyperbole and he went too far with it, which is extraordinarily common by the way. I just think it's foolish to say that makes his entire point worth ignoring. That's what several people are trying to say. That because he picked the wrong number or his hyperbole went too far, his entire point is worth ignoring, and furthermore his entire interview is worth ignoring. Personally, I think that's dumb. Much dumber than saying 18 sacks where he should've said 12.

Based on what I've heard I don't think he's a bad football analyst at all. In fact I think he's better than at least 80 percent of what I've heard from other "analysts" on NFL Network/ESPN, as well as our local guys. He clearly does RESEARCH, and he cites it appropriately. His arguments are well organized and fairly well thought out. I was impressed. I agreed with maybe only half of what he said but that didn't mean I wasn't impressed by the work he's clearly doing.

I think sometimes it depends on the hyperbole used. When you go to an extreme, you can kill your argument I think because the audience can no longer validate that your argument is based upon facts or bias. I think once he made that last statement about the sack numbers, that result kind of was realized. I think you can recover from poor hyperbole depending on the argument. I think making projections when there is a such a ???? to have such a definite negative projection is telling. It's like me and Lebron James. I don't give a hoot how many rings Lebron James gets...he'll never be better than Jordan, Kobe, or Magic. Now...the first thing you think is...really...no matter how many rings? You'd prolly think I had a hardon for Lebron James and already had my mind made up. Which I do. Then from then on you know my opinion on discussions on Lebron James is really defunct because I'll be pretty biased in my opinions regardless of the outcome.

Well, he certainly achieved the goal of getting Fins fans dander up.

However, is it right for him to dwell only on the negative aspects of every FA and draft pick, rather than factor in the positives of those guys...

Wallace is not known as a route tactician...but he has speed and elusiveness and has been consistent in his production within his offense at Pitts... Even this past year, when his production was down from 2010, 2011, it was consistent with the teams overall drop in production in 2012... However, let it also be said that his TD production didn't change even tho his yards and catches decreased and the team's overall offensive production decreased... The reports in the media, from team mates and the staff in Pitts are that he is NOT a locker room problem even tho he's differed with the organization over his worth. The Stillers chose not to pay him elite money because they had Brown to fall back on and also because with the high number of productive veteran stars (Polomaolo, Harrison, Big Ben, Miller, Hampton, Woodley, etc) they simply had to choose over a guy on a contract and guys that were coming off contracts... It's called the business of football.

Jordan: We don't know what he will bring, exactly. He was drafted as a project. Our last DE/OLB project guy worked out pretty good (Cam Wake). They brought him along slowly the first year and he took off from there. We had a guy on the roster as late as last year that was physically a spitting image of Jordan who had been pretty danged productive at DE/OLB as 6'6", 244 Lb guy (Jason Taylor). I'm not comparing JT to Jordan, except in size. Now does Jordan need to improve his strength at the POA, yes. Is his weakness in college ball his rush defense...yes. Was he not exceptional in pass rush ability and decent in short pass coverage...yes. Is he a sure-fire HOFer...no. Can he be productive at this level...the indications are that he can. It seems that because EVERY talking head had us picking an OL high in the draft and we didn't that this move was a bad one. The fact is that Ireland was able to move up to #3, for a reasonable cost, and acquire a guy that has a lot of upside and potential. While you can question whether we should have taken an OL instead of Jordan, you can't argue that he has as much potential as a stud as any of the perceived 'top 5' guys in this draft. It's easy to knock any of the picks in the draft since none of us (including all the talking heads) have seen any of these guys line up and play yet...

Monopoly money: Yeah, Ireland threw money hand over fist this fa. He had to overcome the perception amongst FAs that Miami was a less than desirable place to come to. You can say he overpaid for Wallace, but some team was going to pay his price. Ellerbe would likely have been happy to stay in Balt for less than what we paid him, that, to me is why Irish had to blow him away. It achieved the desired results. And all the talk about how much money we spent speaks pretty highly of how Irish was able to control the cap when many teams were struggling to stay within the cap and keep guys who were in the higher paying years of their contracts. And to boot, the future of our cap looks very good as well...

Ellerbe/Wheeler vs Dansby/Burnett: We paid less for the FA pair and did two things...1) made the team younger without losing significant talent, in fact, I'd say we gained in talent. 2) improved the play-making ability of the D, the pass coverage ability of the D, something we'll use to combat the pasties, btw. This was a continuation of acquiring Coyle's guys. When there is a significant change in play scheme, like there has been here, there will be a turnover of players, this was a pair of those moves... Ellerbe only started 9 games, well it's actually 14 games (not all last season) plus playoff games, but even in starting only 7 games last year, he had 92 tackles, 4.5 sacks and couple of passes defensed... He's certainly overshadowed on that team with the stars of that D, that's no fault of his.

Evan's inability to see any good of any move we've made speaks loudly of his disdain for anything that isn't his perceived mold of an NFL player. It doesn't show insight or forethought. He didn't make any startling insights into what we did. I don't see a guy who did his homework about the history of this regime and the weaknesses of this team and the reason we may have been interested in a certain type of player. Like most former players, he has a perception that a veteran player is automatically better for a team than a less veteran guy. I see a guy (Evans) who is so set in his ways of who/what/how much a football player should be that he can't see potential in anyone who isn't of that ilk. Kind of like the Quitcellian mantra that we've had to endure for 4 years... Maybe that is why it's struck such a chord with Fins fans...

No, lets not talk about such amazing charactisrics that are new rookie has inside, lets not not really figure out what that means, fu&$ing amazing by the way, and I keep telling folks about it, but don't get many partners..

If you notice Pod, Dion didnt leave his feet last year, nor try to swat passes..wait until that comes into his repertoire, good luck throwing the screen pass when this guy can get vertical and extend his arms...lol..we don't wanna talk about all the possibilities with this kid.

I think people are scared..their scared because of what they don't know..and noone has every seen a skillset like this before..

You know a comment like that could actually come back to haunt you, in his circles, I'm sure he's getting slack for it, maybe he"ll get embarrassed a few times because of the stupidity and anger.

Actually the whole "WWBB do" is a huge part of the problem in the way we had been doing things, if one wants to beat them, you have to have a dramatic difference from them in terms of explosive athletes making plays.

Why play chess with a chess master when you can play Go?

This was the Parcellian mistake, "oh our larger, well disciplined, and slow athletes will defeat their larger, well disciplined, and slower athletes led by a HoF caliber Qb"?

That is not going to work and has not worked, if one looks at how teams consistently defeat them they are more physical and making more impact plays.

Put it this way, the conventional wisdom was "take the LT", Ireland took an impact player prospect, in 3 yrs he could be the best passrushing DE/OLB in the NFL, all a LT can be is what?

The unspoken here is if Martin bonks again, or plays bottom 30% of LT's in the league, it is up to Tannehill to make it work, at the end of the day all roads lead to the 2013 Dolphins going as far as Tannehill carries the offense. That is what the Jordan over Johnson decision tells me.

Well, keep in mind he also has to show durability on the NFL level, injuries are the bane of young players, otherwise when I said once every 10 yrs type of player I was not B$ing.

Recall when I said Wake was better than Suggs and you were "hmm, don't know Pods Suggs is..."

I feel that strongly about Dion Jordan, especially once he learns how to couple all of that explosiveness to the proper use of leverage via hand placement

So CK...not being argumentative here, but I want to take this piece right here and ask a question. If he clearly does his research why did he do so very little research regarding the Miami Dolphins and make such definitive predictions based on that? He said we should be concerned about pressure up the middle when we have to 2 PB DTs, Ellerbe being one of the better blitzers from the Mike from our previous discussions on here and Mike Wallace being a cancer which there is no real evidence to support? Free Agency sucked. He said we played with Monopoly money when regardless of who we brought in, we'd have to spend just to get to the salary floor and are still in great shape right now. He said we should be more like BB, when in actuality we brought in similar players.

So...being Vincent Gambini here for a moment....why would a sharp guy...from South Florida....who by all appearances does his research more thoroughly and consistently than 80% of the analysts that work for the NFL Network....so definitively go against the grain on the Miami Dolphins based on research that doesn't exist because it is inaccurate or is based on heresay, refuted by direct sources? I'm not saying he's not a good analyst. I'm not saying he's an idiot. But there must be some reason as to why the Miami Dolphins are an aberration to his typical accuracy on matters concerning NFL Analysis.

Which would be the audience's mistake, not his.
