Just being a smart ***. Apparently though Redmond told reporters Stanton was shutting it down for a few days, and then Stanton was out running, so now I'm confused.
15-10 in June. Best part is, it's the younger players playing well. Dietrich(lately), Ozuna, Stanton, Morrison, Turner, Fernandez, and Eovaldi. Also, in the minor leagues, certain prospects are stepping up. Things are really looking good for the future.
Jose Fernandez is really good. I have to give the Marlins credit, didn't think he was ready to be up but he is. He should be a priority signing along with Stanton.
I still think it was unwise to let him start the year at the MLB level as they lost an extra year of control, but yeah Fernandez is very good and it would be smart to try to buy out a year or two of free agency by extending him, of course Boras is his agent so that might be wishful thinking. Call me crazy but if the Marlins can get a big haul for Stanton it might be in their best interest to move him. His injury history worries me a tiny bit.
I still don't think Stanton is the type of player you build around to win a championship. So I agree with you. And once again I agree about Fernandez. Is TB the only team smart enough to keep a player down until they gain an extra year? I mean, everyone knows Miami isnt going anywhere yet they still decided a couple months was more important then the extra year of Control. I don't get it.
BTW, not trying to say you cant build around Stanton or you cant win with him. I just don't think the high strikeout, high HR total, is all that difficult to come around. Put that along with his injuries, and thats why I made the comment.
Stanton has had a lot of problems with his legs and shoulders and for a power hitter it should at least raise a red flag considering his age. He might be a Troy Tulo type where he never plays over 150 games due to injuries. He's a very good player don't get me wrong but being able to play each day is huge. No TB isn't the only team that uses the arbitration years to their advantage, most teams do. Which is why it was so confusing the Marlins didn't with Fernandez, especially since they weren't really going to be contending this year anyway. If the Marlins were suppose to be good and the division was going to be tight all year I could understand it better as an extra win or two might be the difference in making the playoffs or not but yeah didn't make sense then or now.
I wouldn't say that. With offense being down for a few years, guys that have 40 plus HR power are very rare. Someone like that has a lot of value to a team even with a high K rate, especially since everyone K's a ton now.
I understand that. But are those extra 10 HRs more important then lets say a 30 HR guy that plays every day and a stud pitcher? or another good position player? I don't think so.
Of course not but if a team has an everyday player that hits 30 HRs and a stud pitcher they're most likely not going to trade them for Stanton anyway.
I know you were, so was I. I don't think you'll see a team make a trade for Stanton if they have that type of player(s) in the system already. Teams are just way too in love with their prospects nowadays, for better or worse.
The Marlins could get a huge haul for Stanton and I really think they're considering a trade. An apparently unmotivated seller gets the best deal. There was an article on si.com about potential Stanton trades and the names were ridiculous. Becuase of the service time, even non-contenders might be interested, particularly teams like the Mets and seattle who want to contend in the next year or two. If you can turn Stanton into Profar and Olt for example, plus a few lesser prospects you should probably do it. The Marlins actually have a chance to be good in 2 years or so
He he had a .969 OPS last year with 37 homeruns in 123 games. This after hitting only 1 homerun in his first 21 games. Calling him just a "high homerun high strikeout" player is a really unfair and inaccurate characterization, in my opinion. There aren't many Stanton's in this league. The injury concerns are legitimate and I agree the Marlins should think about moving him for the right package. But he has unique potential.
I was never worried about Fernandez's service time because he's the type of player you sign before he reaches arbitration anyway. I know Boras is his agent but signing him is something you get done if you believe he was going to play well enough up here to call him up so early. I really didn't think he was ready but he's proven more than capable. Regarding Stanton to Texas, that deal is probably dead as Profar is the only legit prospect they have to trade for Stanton. Olt, Ramirez, Buckel have all struggled mightily. I think St. Louis could be a great trade partner. They won't part with Miller but Taveras could be a main part of the package. I would prefer to keep him because he is a great player but I can get on board for trading him because of his injury risk.
But the problem is you're assuming Fernandez will sign an extension. As a GM you can't assume anything, especially with Boras as his agent because Boras' track record for extending players before their 6th year of service time is up is Elvis Andrus, Jarred Weaver and then.......? So the Marlins could have make an unnecessary risk for what? Whether or not the Marlins utlimately extend Fernandez, the fact remains it still wasn't a smart baseball decision. As a non-contending team, whether you're a small, medium or big market, it makes almost no sense to risk losing an extra year of service time with a solid prospect.
How many of his clients were In Jose Fernandez's position? I know his reputation as a agent but Fernandez's position seems to be an exception compared to his other clients. Maybe I'm wrong there I maintain it was stupid to call him up for developmental reasons. Service time didn't bother me as much because I do think they planned on signing him to an extension like the Rays did with Matt Moore. I would have liked for him to be up in June for the extra year of service but at least it seems like they have a plan.
Also, I wouldn't be upset if we trade Morrisson if he has a good year. He has injury issues, as well.
You didn't see Stephen Strasburg, Bryce Harper, Matt Wieters or Prince Fielder (to name a few recent big name players) sign extensions and they were billed as top superstar prospects and were in similar positions Fernandez is now, perhaps even in better positions for big pay days. I'm not saying it's impossible or Fernandez won't sign an extension, just saying it wasn't a smart baseball decision to have him start the year in the big leagues whether he was ready or not.
Yeah he's another guy that probably due to injury reasons just never developed like he was projected. Really anyone who's not figured to be on the team in 3 to 4 years should be on the block.
Right. He's also playing well at the moment. And we have his potential replacement In Yelich, or we can just acquire another first baseman if we deal him or Stanton. A lot of options but I'm actually excited as a Marlins fan. Didn't think I would be this season.
You should be. They have a brand new ballpark which from all accounts (plus/minus the left center thingy) is very well done and have a lot of young talent. Sometimes you need to take two steps back to go three steps forward. The Blue Jay trade was probably the best thing for that franchise for their long term outlook, after making many mistakes in signings in 2011/2012. Marlins are kind of in the Red Sox situation where they were able to rid themselves of some bad contracts all at once while taking in a few prospects/young players realizing it might hurt the team in the short term to better help in the long term.
I always liked him as a prospect, very good approach at the plate, so I hope he's finally fully healthy. My only concerns with him would be if his bat has enough pop at 1B and if he can stay healthy, obviously.
No surprise Nolasco was traded. I enjoyed his time down here and wish him well in LA. Glad this team is playing well finally and I am most happy for Mike Redmond - he has done a great job. Still hate Loria though.
So fun projected lineup and rotation for next year: LF Christian Yelich: He's hurt right now but he's our best hitting prospect. Supposedly is really athletic so I'm presuming he grades out as a plus LFer. Shown very good on base skills and has emerging power. Roughly projecting a .750 OPS from him in 2014. .850 in peak years. 2B Derrick Dietrich: Currently has a .700 OPS but that number is hurt by .653 OPS against RHP. Considering his minor league track record (career .880 RHP OPS, .950 over the last two minor league seasons). Like Yelich, has a really cool mix of on base skills and pop. Seems to be an average fielder at second base. Roughly projecting a .750 OPS from him in 2014. .850 in peak years. RF Giancarlo Stanton: Everyone knows about him. His biggest issue is health. Roughly projecting a .900 OPS from him in 2014. 1B Logan Morrison: He's finally healthy and showing why everyone was so high on him a few years ago. Average is a a little BABIP-inflated, but he's walking and showing really good power. Roughly projecting a .850 OPS from him in 2014. CF Marcell Ozuna/Jake Marisnick: Could end up being either of these guys. Both are classic boom or bust prospects, although I believe Marisnick's ceiling to be higher. Marisnick projects to have the better glove and gets on base at a higher clip, while Ozuna has shown more power. Roughly projecting a .750 OPS from them in 2014. .850 in peak years 3B Chris Coghlan: Coghlan was on his way to third before his injury so I imagine he'll play there when he gets back. D know what to expect either but he's cheap. Projecting anywhere from .500 to .800 OPS from him in 2014. C Rob Brantly: I think he sucks but he's young, cheap, and has some upside. Roughly projecting a .650 OPS from him in 2014. .750 in peak years SS Adeiny Hechavarria: Great glove. Can't hit. Roughly projecting a .650 OPS from him in 2014. .725 in peak years. Kind of tired. I'll do the rotation tomorrow.
I think Ozuna should have CF locked down, personally. He could be this type of performer for the rest of his career, and I'll be happy. He's an elite defender. I think LF should be a competition between Yelich and Marisnick.
I don't know if I'd call him elite yet. Marisnick is supposed to be extremely good as well and is having a really nice breakout season in Jacksonville. I imagine it'll be a free for all between all three of them.
Well at least you guys are having fun talking about this team. I'm still sick of this franchise right now.
