    Nasty's Notes

Well, the day didnt get off to a great start, when I woke up at 7:52am in a panic. I somehow set my alarm for 7:15pm last night... so I had to quickly throw some dolphin gear on and rush to Nova. Turns out though that the first 30min was in the bubble... so I luckily got there in time! They ran out a few minutes after I got in my seat. (and man... do I want to hump those new sexy helmets. Amazing.)

When they came out of the bubble, they broke up into 3 packs. Skill players (RBs/WRs/TEs vs LBs/CBs/S) on the front left field, and OL v DL on the front right field. Special teams on the far field (where they belong!). The groups start out in 7v7 drills. Since they werent in pads today, I didnt spend a lot of time watching the linemen... as IMO its hard to really take much of significance away from watching linemen play in their pajamas.
So... on to the skill players.

    7 v 7s

    - First play of the day... Tannehill goes deep for Wallace down the right sideline beating Grimes... but was just overthrown off Wallace's finger tips. I didnt see the actual route (was looking opposite side for the first couple seconds of the play), it felt like a double move based on the timing. Wallace got Grimes there by a coulple yards.
    - Play action to Binns on a 10 yard out. Binns attempted to drag 2 feet, but hard to tell if he got them in from my view. It was close.
    - Tannehill targets Sims on an out route but misses him incomplete.
    - With Keller lined up on the right, Tannehill hit him on a play action pass on an in/crossing route for 8 yards or so... guarded by Reshad Jones.
    - Side note here. I feel like I saw a lot more of Sims today than Keller. Maybe I just missed Keller, but looking back, I didnt really see him much out there? I do know that Sims seemed to get some good reps with the 1s throughout the day.
    - Rishard Matthews lined up on the left side against Dimitri Patterson. Got him on a comeback for 5 yards.
    - Matt Moore comes in. Cant find anyone open and finally hits Hartline on what would be a long crossing route. I think it was probably a sack.
    - Matt Moore's 2nd play was much better, hitting Marvin McNutt on a crossing route from right to left (Sidenote - McNutt popped up a lot today. The quarterbacks were finding him all day).
    - Then threw a nice strike to Brandon Gibson. Gibson was lined up on the outside to the left, with a WR in the slot on his side. It was the typical combination where the slot runs a fly and the outside undercuts the slot WR on an in breaking route. Moore hits Gibson with a well timed strike over the middle.
    - Hartline runs a nice comeback on Richard Marshall to create a decent amount of seperation. Moore hits him with good timing, and Hartline gives a good juke with his back to Marshall, and shook him out of his shoes. Would have been a nice gain.
    - Tannehill back in. Binns lined up on the right side, and ran an in/crossing route for about 12 and made a nice diving catch over the middle.
    - Play action with Gibson lined up on the left, runs an in route for 10 yards.
    - Armon Binns catches a play action pass from Tannehill who beats Dimitri Patterson.

    - Teams break for individual technique drills. Pretty boring. The only thing that was kinda interesting to watch was that Jamar Taylor and Will Davis were lined up together in the individual drills. Jamar Talor has both a quicker back pedal and release than Davis... although who really knows if either player is going game speed in some individual practice drill.

    - Teams break for special teams drills. zzzzzzzzzz....

    11 v 11s

    - 1st and 10 scenarios from their own 20. Starting OL is what you'd expect - Martin, Richie, Pouncey, Jerry, Clabo. Charles Clay is lined up at FB with Miller in the backfield. Hartline on the left, with Gibson outside right and Wallace in the right slot (saw this a LOT today. The had Wallace lined up in the slot for a good chunck of his reps today when in 3 WR packages. Lined up outside in those packages too, but was just surprised at the amount of his slot usage).
    - Run play to set the tone a little (as much as you can with only helmets on).
    - Keller is in here lined up on the right side of the line, Gibson outside right with Wallace in the slot right and Hartline on the left. Playaction pass deep down the left sideline to Hartline but over threw him.
    - Wallace in the right slot with Sims lined up at TE on the right hand side. Daniel Thomas runs to the left for about 4 or so.
    - Wallace lines up by himself out wide, motions in before the snap and then keeps running inwards to take an end around of playaction around to the left for a decent gain.
    - McNutt lined up on the outside to the right with Matthews in the slot. McNutt, matching up with Nolan Carrol, took it deep. It was a floater and McNutt came back and out played Carrol for the ball by high pointing it well for a nice catch. Drew praise from the crowd.
    - Moore is in (just realized hes in. Dont know if this is his first play or not. Things were moving quick, lol). Lamar Miller with a solid run up the middle for a gain of 4ish
    - Bubble screen to the right for Armon Binns for a short gain
    - Real nice run by Miller here. Run up the middle and a nice hole opened up between the RG and RT... and Miller read it well, hit it quick, and got into the open field. Had a few of these breaking runs. Loved to see it. If he can occasionally get us those... while giving us more consistent production on his non-breaking runs than Reggie was able to... our run game could actually be better. However... players are in t-shirts and shorts... so nothing to get too excited about yet. Miller does look quick out there though man.
    - They move the field position to the 30 and turn on the crowd noise. The fans catch on and start trying to make noise to contribute. Moore still at QB. Sims lined up at TE. Hartline lined up against Marshall gets him on a comeback for a 4 yard gain..
    - Same play, this time defensive pass interference on Marshall guarding Hartline on that comeback.
    - Keller was lined up at FB on this play which caught my eye. He leaked out to the left. Gibson caught the pass on an in route from right to left... but I'm pretty sure Olivier Vernon got the sack before Moore could get it off. (another sidenote here. I didnt specifically watch Vernon during plays, b/c I dont watch linemen in t-shirts... but I saw him in the backfield a bunch today).
    - John Jerry almost gives up for a sack by getting blown up but Moore steps up quickly. and hits McNutt on a crossing route. The throw was kinda a duck though, as Moore threw it off balance.
    - Moore hits McNutt on a quick slant to the right, who beat Nolan Carrol.
    - Mike Wallace is a little confused as where to line up as he lines up to the right. Moore had to get him over to the left side for a run play.
    - Moore then fumbles the next shotgun snap. You could see him look up and take his eyes off of hit before he caught it. He just picked it up and chucked it deep incomplete.
    - Tannehill comes in. Read option run QB keeper wide open to the right for an easy 15 yard gain. I could hear DJ in the distance... how do you say... fapping? lol
    - Play action but sacked by Vernon
    - Sacked by Vernon again. Tannehill with no time back there.
...and then you see the starting o-line come back in, lol. I wasnt paying much attention to the lines, so I dont know exactly at what point they came out (maybe when Tannehill came in?)... but the coaches had seen enough of that nonsense.
    - Wake lined up against Sims... absolutely smoked him on an inside move. Guess Wake picked up on the rookie playing him outside and taught him a quick lesson. The back had to come over to help chip but it forced Tannehill to thorw it away.

    - Break into special teams work...

    - It was at this point I finally saw Dion Jordan. And I'll tell you what... that dude aint near as skinny as I was expecting. He isnt built like Wake or anything... but he had a much better build for his body than I was expecting. Dont know if he's bulked up (dont know how much of that you can do with a shoulder injury? But it wasnt fat) or whether I just had the wrong impression of his body type... but he was definitely built more than I was expecting. He looks good. DJ's in trouble... lol
    - During FG practice, they started doing some fire drills if there was a bad snap. One funny play, Pouncey had leaked out deep down the middle and was open. Fields chucked it deep (short/duck), and Josh Samuda was running deep looking at the ball and not seeing Pouncey... dived reaching out only getting a hand on it, essentially batting it down right in front of Pouncey. Pouncey was pissed and was yelling at him b/c he badly wanted to catch that for a TD, lol.

    11 v 11s

    - 1st and 10 from their own 21 moving from right to left.
    - Hartline to the left, Wallace out wide right and Gibson in the slot right. Wallace motions in and then runs and out route for 10 yards from Tannehill.
    - Gibson in the slot to the left, Miller has a sweet cutback run starting to the right and finishing left for a nice 15-20 yard gain. Saw it and hit it.
    - Rishard Matthews took an end around from left to right... but Wake blew the play up for probably a 10 yard loss.
    - Binns runs an end around this time frim right to left, this time Derrick Shelby killed it in the back field.
    - Marvin McNutt was in the slot, and had what appeared to possibly be an option route? He went out about 7 yards and turnd around and sat down and Tannehill found him in the hole of the defense.
    - Moore comes back in. Marcus Thigpen at RB (Side note - I wrote down 34 in my notes... not paying attention to who that was. That was Marcus Thigpen? Maybe I'm mis-remembering here now... but he seemed thick. Bigger than I remember him being?). Thigpen took a nice dive for 5 yards.
    - Hartline was lined up on the left matched up with Dimitri Patterson and ran a 12-15 yard in breaking route. Moore's throw was a little behind Hartline (that may have been forced due to the positioning of the LB, couldnt tell from sideline view), but Patterson broke it up from behind.
    - Play action designed roll out to the right, Moor hits Wallace on a 15 yard deep comeback matched up against Carroll.
    - Binns beats Carroll on an out to the right for 8 yards.

    5 v 7s

    - Nice catch by Sims over the middle
    - Matthews beats Marshall deep along the left sideline, but it looked like he stopped running for a second on the play and ended up getting over thrown.
    - Marshall all over Hartline on a come back incomplete.
    - Moore chucks it to a complete empty portion of the field. It didnt look intentional... so there was some miscommunication here.
    - Maybe it was on Moore's part? B/c Tannehill comes in. Wallace inthe slot, no one open and hechecks down after a while.
    - Wallace runs a deep out from the right slot. Tannehill did a nice job dropping it in over 1 defender and short the safety... Wallace leaves his feet and goes up but drops it.
    - Tannehill taking too long not finding anyone open. runs.
    - Rolls to the right to Keller on an out or crossing route (didnt see where he lined up) but drops it.
    - Tannehill cant find anyone and runs.
    - That group of plays was sloppy for Tannehill. Wasnt getting rid of the ball quick enough here.

    11 v 11s

    - Crowd noise is turned back on. Tannehill rolls out right off a play action fake stretch to the right with Miller. Miller flares out to the right and Tannehill hits him for a 10-15 yard gain.
    - Run started to the left and Miller cuts it back up the middle for around 5-6 yards.
    - Play action pass to Gibson over the middle who was on an in breaking route for about 10 yards.
    - Binns was lined up out Right and Brent Grimes was laying off him with about a 10 yard cushion, and Tannehill quickly turned and hit him with a pass for about a 5 yard gain.
    - Odrick gets the sack off the left side (either LDE or LDT, didnt see his alignment presnap).
    - Moore comes in. Thigpen has a solid run to the right for about 4-5 yards.
    - Jonas Gray gets stuffed up the middle
    - Marvin McNutt lined up on RJ Stanford in the right slot, ran a post and Moor found him over the middle for 10 yards.
    - Get to finally get a look at both Jamar Taylor and Will Davis. I feel like they were getting the reps of the 5th/6th CBs today in their first practice.
    - Moore gets sacked with both Tristan Okpalaugo and Emeka Onyenekwu (did I really just type all that? lol) in the back field, but I think Tristan got there first.
    - Run to the right for about 4 yards (didnt catch the RB, sorry)
    - Pass play, and both the rooks actually had great coverage. Will davis was lined up on the right side of the defense and his man ran a fly route down the slideline and he was step for step. Jamar on the left side, his man ran a post and he too was step for step. Moore checks it down with no one open.
    - At this point it seemed like the offense went with some bigger packages, 2 WR and 1 WR packages.
    - RB Cameron Marshall with a nice run to the right for 5 yards.
    - Then he gets stuffed the next play.
    - Under pressure... Moore throws it away.
    - Pat Devlin comes in. Mike Gillislee up the middle gets stuffed.
    - Gillislee then takes the next run play and has a big gain. Took it up the middle, and then broke it outside to the right once he got through the line and took it down the sideline. Big play for him.
    - Last play of the day... was a great pass deflection by Lee Robinson over the middle that was targeting Dion Sims.

And that was practice. The final horn sounded and practice was over and I bolted out of there to try to beat traffice, lol. While in the parking lot, I did see Tannehill and Wallace working together after practice, and Jamar Taylor was on his own running 50 yard sprints across the field.

And thats all I got. I know I know... TL;DR. Wife is calling me to grill lunch...

    Oh, and...

Curious about the Wallace overthrow. It seems the impression was made that he could NOT be overthrown. From your report it was missed by inches, do you remember this as being the QB's overthrow, or maybe a play by the DB to hold Wallace up, or what?

There has been some criticism of Wallace of dropping easily catch-able balls this practice. Is that the impression you have as well, and maybe it's just practice man.

Ya, like I was saying, I missed the initial route of the WR b/c I was watching the other side of the field. However, it felt like it took Wallace too long to get down where he was based on the timing. I looked over that way once Tannehill released it. Either it was a double move, or he got grabbed by Grimes as Wallace ran by.

Thanks Bro, that was a good fix, Seems as though Vern is just overpowering dudes, his weight is up, he's more agile than Odrick on the edge so he can cover more ground in the flat, and I think I'd rather have him on the end in pass rush..hmmm, we have ourselves a pretty serious comp it seems.

Dion Jordan..been saying it all offseason, his body is different than the perception tells you, it has the potential with its symmetry and length combined with good width in his joints to be the best in the NFl, with his rare genetics the weight that he adds as he gets older will always distribute evenly, remember this kid trained for the combine hard before the shoulder surgery, but with a busted shoulder, weighed in at 250 lbs and killed it athletically for a man that size..260 will not be a problem in a coup,e years..

You wrote the name Binns a lot..

Ryan and miller running the read option against buffalo in their last meeting of the regular season..10/100..

Don't like seeing you point out about Ryan holding the ball to long, imo last year there was a delay in the ability to react to the pressure and transition/engage his athleticism to escape, if its not there don't wait in the same spot, shuffle, reset, just a lil spot to watch out for..

Any idea who was playing nickel corner bro?

Hard to know about Vernon without pads on. I didn't watch him specifically... but he was in the backfield plenty.

As far as the nickle... I think it was Carroll?

    THANKS FINASTY! Made my day.

    Great notes.

    Some thoughts...

Lamar looking good (with no pads)
Coaches want end arounds as constraint play this year, esp. w/ Wallace on field
    Moore outplaying Tannehill thus far.
    Carrol not impressing.
Dion Sims (my favoite pick this year) is going to sneak up on a lot of people. May steal snaps from Keller.
Hartline still making a living on comebacks.
Not thrilled with Tannehill's reports from any of the camps this year.
Tanehill constantly completing playaction. Man, you gotta be a threat on normal passing downs too.
Lots of Miller cut backs, are they designed, or is blocking not there?
    Loving our rookie DBs.

Really curious how Martin looked. If you kept seeing Vernon in the backfield, it's likely Martin didn;t have a great day.

Consensus seems to be that Martin had an uneventful day, which is good for a LT. OV probably got his sacks against the second/third string. Jeff Adams, I believe his name was.

As for Vernon making plays vs. the LT....... It was as soon as they brought in the 2nd team 0-line.... Forget his name ( Samuda? ) got man handled, not Martin. Got that from Mando's blog.

The much anticipated training camp debut of Jonathan Martin at left tackle was uneventful. He was not beaten on any pass-rushes by Olivier Vernon, who worked with the starting defense at right end.
The same cannot be said of first-year left tackle Jeff Adams. Although quarterbacks aren't being hit (or touched, really) it was clear Adams gave up at least two sacks had this been game action. He had a tough day.
The beneficiary of Adams' struggle was Vernon. He collected both sacks.
Second-team center Josh Samuda also was inconsistent today, with the most obvious sign of that coming when he short-hopped a shotgun snap to quarterback Matt Moore.

So excited I forgot to officially thank FinNasty!

What I'm taking from 1st day reports:
They ran the option ! Having Matt Moore as your backup is Huge for many reasons. Big weirdo passed the 1st eye test. The depth at WR is nuts. McNutts. Good thing there's 5 games for them to battle it out. Wallace in the slot sounds juicy. I'm sure we'll see everyone from him to Clay inside there..Thigpen too maybe ? Speaking of Clay, seems he was the top FB out there. Sure they want to upgrade the position.... but it seems he's carved a role for himself in the offense. He scored that big TD late Vs the Seahawks out of the FB spot last year. They did however try Keller in a similar role, and no surprise that Dion Sims looks ready to make an impact. Keller's going to wish he signed the multi-year deal.

Not much to interpret from the defense yet. The only guy's name you really want to be hearing is Vernon's ... until Jordan is ready and the pads come on. Good start for the defense I guess.

Flashbacks to Harltline alone down field last year and waiting for the floaters or being overthrown. Tannehill needs work on his down field accuracy.

This is something I am concerned with as well. Everyone claimed last year that Hartline was inadequate and that an actual down-field threat with speed would run under the overthrown balls that we had last year. Early reports are saying that Tannehill was overthrowing Wallace....that's one of the fastest guys in the league. Very interested to see how Tanne does in these next few days with down-field throws.

Early reports were that Tannehill overthrew Wallace once...on the first play no less. WADR, you're both overreacting.

I think Pre Season is going to be a good indication of if the first team offense has skill to get chunk yards. There's nothing wrong with taking what the D gives you but you seldom see Brady or Rothlesberger missing on intermediate or long opportunities.

    That was some nasty notes!

W00t football! Thanks Nasty great job I really enjoyed those.

Sounds as if Tannehill is a bit rusty.

Par for the course this time of year. So many folks are so excited about the opening of camp.
