Sorry for the later posting guys. I had to do some work on my lawn when I got home before I could hop on the computer. Anyway, on to practice!

My pen was struggling a little today, so it was hard to take as many notes as last time (waits for DJ to tell me to use the recorder on my phone :wink2:). Today was much hotter than last Sunday's practice. Last Sunday it was overcast which shaded the sun. Today there was no such thing, and with players in full pads, they had to be feeling it. I sure was, lol. The QBs came out of the bubble a little earlier than the rest of the team, along with Wallace, Gibson, Hartline, and Keller. A few minutes later, the rest of the skill players poured out (WRs, TEs and RBs).

With my pen acting shady, I didnt take as much play-by-play type notes today. So instead I wanted to watch some players in more detail now that we were in full pads. Specifically, I wanted to pay more attention to the linemen with full pads, since I watch a lot of the skill players when they were all wearing shorts and t-shirts.

The first player I'm going to talk about is Dion Jordan... b/c we finally got to see Jordan doing full contact with pads. Finally! I didnt know that was coming, so it was definitely a pleasant surprise, and had me watching him most snaps he was on the field. His first work came in 1v1s on the far field, where they were working on run blocking/setting the edge. And Dion Jordan was the first player to line up (he was first to line up for a couple of different drills today), and went against Martin. And Martin got the best of him... specifically for 1 reason that happened a number of times to him today. And that reason is that he gets too high when playing the run. Dion is the tallest player on the defensive side of the ball usually, and he needs to work a lot on getting lower when engaging on the run to anchor more and use better leverage. He gets too high and lets the blocker into his body and stand him up. Its one thing the coaches were trying to work with him on it looked like. Today's practice in general involved a lot of run play orientated drills for both the offense and the defense today, so I got a lot more look at that than his pass rushing. And he definitely needs to work on his leverage in that area, although he did have one nice engage working against Jeff Adams. That was the lowest he got all day, and he won that battle. I'm sure the coaches will put that on the film for him. As far as his presnap defensive alignments today... he lined up in the 2pt, 3pt, and 4pt stances today, all coming on the right edge of the defense. I will say there was one play where both him and Wake were lined up in 4pt stances on either side of the line was pretty bad *** looking, lol. But like I said, more work was done in the run game than the pass game. When he did get pass rush attempts, it was relatively uneventful unfortunately. He seemed like he was thinking a lot out there. His head may have been spinning a bit, but a couple times he seemed to react late to the snap not getting off very quick, not due to explosion, but literally like a delayed reaction. He did have a couple nice pass rushing plays, not getting sacks but pressures. Got in one time off the right edge after a quick chip from the TE, the RB went to pick him up and Jordan Ole'd him like a bullfighter, forcing a throw. He also got in the backfield and jumped up almost batting it down in the backfield but still affected the throw. But he didnt get a ton of pass rush attempts today so I dont have more. I'm hoping to see a lot more of that tomorrow during the scrimmage! But you can clearly the see athleticism. He was being used on the punt coverage team and the kick return team. After practice, him, 66 and 69 (I refuse to type their names, lol) stayed late and were working with a coach on their rip moves and hands.

The next player I'm going to talk about is our other rookie Dion... Dion Sims. He caught my eye the first practice, so I wanted to see what he looked like in pads and see if it was more of a fluke. We'll he doesnt look like a fluke... and based on the types of reps the coaches keep giving him (plenty of work with the 1's again today)... I'm guessing thats how they feel as well. He isnt a burner... but this guy has quicks. He just looks like a fluid athlete out there, not one thats lumbering around. He threatens the seams with good speed getting behind LBs (had a big gain beating Jonathan Freeny down the seam), and has done a nice job getting separation on in and out breaking routes. Most importantly, he looks like hes got some soft hands. Multiple times today he caught passes that were behind him spinning around 180deg and catching the ball away from his body. If he's had a drop in the 2 days I went, I've missed it (possible, a lot going on out there, lol). I will tell you right now that this kid is going to get work this season. And thats not just me saying it... the coaches actions of continually repping him with the 1's tells you all you need to know.

I didnt watch a lot of the skill players as much, but here are some notes on some of them:

Thigpen - Last practice I saw him mainly at RB. Today it seemed like he was mainly at WR. And he seemed to do well in the reps I saw of his. He had some nice catches, one over the middle for about 10 yards. Later in practice he was lined up out wide and caught a TD from Tannehill matched up I believe against Nolan Carrol (not 100% but think it was him?).

Hartline - The connection him and Tannehill is crazy. They have such perfect timing and anticipation. It seems like Hartline can get those breaking routes whenever he wants, particularly that comeback route to the sideline. He gets on top of that CB, gets him to flip his hips, and then crashes down and steals that 5-10 yards so damn easily... and Tannehill throws those passes with perfect anticipation. He caught a nice TD from Tannehill later in practice on a deep crossing route from left to right (similar to that route he ran that went for the long TD against AZ last year. Opposite direction and not near as much open field as the route took him into the endzone this time, but you get my point). Tannehill floated it over the Richard Marshall for the score.

Binns - Looked good early but then looks like he hurt his left knee. Trainers were working on it and later he had it wrapped up (with ice? Couldnt tell if iced or not). Sat out the rest of practice.

Marvin McNutt - Seems to be continuing what I saw last week from him. He did have one drop in 1v1s. Ran a very nice post route beating the defender and Tannehill threw a perfectly placed pass to him and he dropped it. But he made up for it with some big plays. He had a 1 handed catch on Will Davis on a ball that was thrown a little too far in front of him, and later caught a bomb from Tannehill, out jumping the defender in the endzone for a TD in a 2 minute drill situation in 11 v 11's. With Binns hurt, and I read that Matthews is hurt as well? That could open a door for McNutt if he keeps on playing like this. IMO, he makes the team if I had to settle rosters today.

Chad Bumphis - I think CK was interested in him? I didnt see him a lot today, but he was in my notes for a nice post route in 1v1s against Reshad Jones, beating him for a nice gain over the middle. He also had a nice catch on a poorly thrown ball low and away.

Michael Egnew - With the TEs we have on this roster... unfortunately I just cant see him making the team. If he does, it would be as the 4th TE, and I dont think they will keep that many, especially with the possible need to keep 6 WRs. I was a huge fan of drafting him, but I dont see a roster spot for him. He had a horrible drop from a georgous throw, perfectly threaded past a defender, from Pat Devlin in 11v11s... but Egnew dropped it. If he didnt put his hands up, it probably would have got stuck in his facemask. Keller, Sims, Clay. Dont see where Egnew lands unfortunately.

Brandon Gibson - Had another nice practice... definitely solidified as the #3. Seemed to work well out of the slot today, beating Will Davis bad on a very nice route (jerk route starting in then popping out). He also caught a 20 yard TD on Richard Marshall on a pretty pass from Moore.

Mike Wallace - He had 1 drop, but had a good practice the rest of what I saw. Caught a pretty pass on a deep crossing route from Tannehill against Grimes... and caught a TD from Devlin.

Offensive Line - OK, so today was a little hard to follow regarding the line. I'm pretty sure the first line to come out was Martin, Dallas Thomas, Pouncey, Incognito, and Clabo. However, those interior 3 were juggled around all over the place. Pouncey played Center and RG. Samuda played C and LG, Incognito played LG and RG. And there was no pattern to it. I'll tell you what... I'm not the biggest fan of Pouncey at RG. He doesnt look comfortable (not shocking), and missed a couple of blocks while lined up there. On a positive, Lance Louis got some full contact reps during 1v1s (maybe team drills too? but I didnt see). Hopefully he can come back and help solidify that guard spot that has the rest of our OL in flux.

    Defensive players:
Olivier Vernon - Had another good practice. Being a more run orientated practice, I felt like today was more his wheel house, lol. Did well taking on a couple of double teams in the run game, disengaging and splitting the blockers. He got Sims/Clay good in one drill... and he did it again against the double team of Clabo and Evan Rodriguez. In regards to pass rushing... he did have a pretty inside spin move on JMartin. I'm hoping to see more stuff like that from him.

Kheeston Randall - Had a nice play driving back Pouncey in 1v1s.

Jared Odrick - He honestly looks great. Hes going to be the reason why Starks isnt going to get a new contract from us. Finally being used correctly as a penetrating interior DLman... hes shining in the role he was meant for (CK slaps his head as to why it took this long, lol). As I'm sure you've heard by now, he got in a big fight with Samuda right in front of me. Samuda didnt like something and went and got in Odricks face, and Odrick went nuts, ripping off his own helmet and trying to fight through multiple teammates to get to Samuda. Was pretty entertaining. Ah... training camp with pads...

CBs - Richard Marshall was the starting CB opposite Grimes today initially in practice, but Dimitri Patterson got plenty of reps with the 1s as well. Those 2 appear locked in a battle for that spot. Marshall stuck Kyle Miller on a crossing route, but Miller held onto the ball. Later with 11v11s broke out again, Patterson was the starting CB. IMO, just based off the limited practicing that I've seen... Patterson is in the lead. Marshall seems to get beat as I have "31" written down a lot on the receiving end of passes. Nolan Carol appears to be the 4th CB, consistently getting reps with the 2nd string. After that is Will Davis. Will Davis had an up and down day, getting beat on his first play on the field during 11v11s against Gibson in the right slot who ran a jerk route to the outside. Grimes had a GREAT diving PBU for a pass intended for Wallace over the middle. Grimes flew in out of no where.... as it looked to be an easy completion.

Defensive scheme in general - If you're expecting us to have 4 guys with their hands on the ground the majority of the time... you'll be disappointed. We are using multiple defensive fronts... sometimes 2 guys with their hands on the ground, sometimes 3, sometimes 4. The defense is very multiple... so expect to see lots of different looks and formations. This aint Wanny's defense boys, I'll tell you that. Should be entertaining to watch...

Thats all I got! I'm excited about the scrimmage tomorrow. Heres hoping for good weather!

    Thanks Nasty...

If we can get some production from Jordan this year, next year, with a full offseason he should really shine, meanwhile VO and Odrick seem to be doing very, very well.

Really confused with what they are attempting to do with OL... It's just too hard to tell if they are just looking for the best 5 or simply moving some guys around so that they have some flexibility in case of injury?? Moving OL around is very unsettling to the fanbase, that's for sure...

Sims seems to be making a name for himself now. He is apparently quicker than most have thought, me included... Egnew may have wasted his time last year as it looks more and more like he's moving on... Too bad, I had better hopes for him...

I'm not too worried about the WRs. I think we see a guy or two that doesn't make our team but does make someones...At this point, I'd have to say that Binns and Matthews are neck and neck and McNutt is just a tad behind them, but in the running. Having them nicked a bit may be just what he needs to slip in there... Are any of the three eligible for the PS??

    Again, nice report..thanks...

Thanks for the great write up. Continuing my theme from the Seabass thread, it's so much better than the beat writer's tweets. They always seem to have their own agenda. Your report is refreshingly objective.

Thanks bro for puttin in the time..

Teach Dion the outside linebacker position..not just Dend..the more 3/4 multiple defense we play, the better for him.

I think you be hard pressed to find many folks who wanted Odrick at def end when he came out as an all American def tackle..

Well, Odrick definitely looks good at DT. Did he lose weight this offseason to play DE? Of so, maybe that weight loss helped him even for DT.

I echo this Nasty, good to get input from someone on here rather than a reporter with an agenda. I don't mind the reporter tweets when there's nothing else to go on, but a Phins.com eye is much more welcome. Looking forward now to see how scrimmage tomorrow goes.

    Great notes.

I believe Odrick put a bit of weight back on to move inside more, actually. He was playing without enough ballast last year, imo, to be the square peg in the round hole for them.

Re: Dion Jordan, I'm hoping for great things from him in 2014. This year, I'll be thrilled if he gets 7 sacks, more hurries and a few tipped passes and Olivier Vernon gets 7 sacks of his own. Need that DE spot/rush OLB spot to give us at least what Wake does on the other side.

    Re Dion Sims: Yup.

Re Will Davis: Mental side of his game is up and down, but the measurables are there. If he gets good coaching and develops he will be like a Tracy porter type CB who can jump short routes and house them for 6. (See Saints v Colts Superbowl)

I think it's too early to be worried about the OL shuffling, we have 5 preseason games don't we? If they are still doing it going into the 3rd preseason game, then I'll be worried that it's because no one on the interior line is floating to the surface - wrt excelling. This is different than the Sparano years. This actually feels like we have some good choices to select from and it's a tougher decision, whereas, with TS, we were desperate to find a good combination.

Not just better for him but also better for the defense. If Dion learns OLB, offenses might as well pack it up.

Thanks Nasty, as always you write well and really inform, just the kind of intel we all hunger for. I do hope I get to meet you at the scrimmage tomorrow night, that would be awesome. And nobody you could be hanging with wouldn't be somebody I wouldn't hit it off with I'm sure. (Did that come out right?) And the wife is not the judgmental type at all. Now I wish I would have bought a ThePhins.com hat, assuming we have them available to buy, I really don't know. I'll likely have on a white Dolphins polo shirt and Dolphins hat, stretch cotton tan shorts. I'm short, only 5'6" and a definite bit of a beer belly, mostly gray hair.

I don't know what to write up if anything, your reports are so good. Also I know very few of the players numbers, do you have all those memorized? Because you don't miss anybody that I can tell.

So excited about tomorrow night, gonna be great!

In short, we do not have a good backup at RG outside of Incognito. Now putting Incognito at RG is not a bad thing but putting Thomas at LG is a bad thing. Thomas cannot play RG, Pouncey, has not played guard for a long time and it would take time to get it down, Samuda cannot play RG and Jerry as usual, gained weight from OTAs until camp and now is hurt. They are trying everything in the book to get a good lineup and even the coaches are scratching their heads. Incognito at RG is great but Dallas Thomas at LG is a liability and throw in Martin alongside of him ? Tannehill is going to get creamed. Move Incognito back to LG which would be a good thing then who plays RG on this team ? I don't know and neither do the coaches or any of us. Louis is not ready to play. Its a cluster phuk for right now due to John Jerry not being in shape and getting hurt. Garner at RG ? ER , NO, Nate is not as good as the majority of the people here think. Jerry and Louis were our RGs for the season, both cannot play right now. Always loved Cogs and the kid can play LG RG and even Center effectively so that's what they are trying to do. Everyone expecting Lance Louis or Dallas Thomas to step right in were seriously not thinking right. Long term ? maybe but for right now fat boy John Jerry has screwed up all the works by being out of shape and getting his knee whacked, which I admit is not his fault, still, Jerry should not be on this football team.
