    Nasty's Notes

Good evening guys. The scrimmage was fun! Great turnout and some exciting plays to entertain the crowds. Its late, so lets get right to it. I didnt take down every play by plays b/c I wanted to watch more, but still took a lot of notes, lol.

They came out and started with some individual drills. It was at this point Hartline pulled up on a route an gingerly walked up to a coach and then the bench. If I had to guess what it was, I'd say it was his left calf. I'd think maybe ankle but he did it while running straight, not cutting. After working with multiple trainers... he seemed park on the bench for the day which was disappointing. Luckily it didnt seem too serious though, as he didnt get it wrapped up and was walking around on the sideline. I think he just tweaked something and they told him not to push it and take the night off. Mike Wallace also sat out but dont know why. That kinda sucked, b/c we didnt get a chance to see Tannehill with his top 2 weapons (didnt seem to matter though).

When 11v11's started... and with Wallace/Hartline out... McNutt and Gibson were the starting WRs. Going left to right, 1st team O vs. 2nd team D. Charles Clay was lined up at the starting FB, and 81 at TE. First drive by the offense went 3 & out, including what seemed to be a miscommunication with Gibson. Punt.

The same teams out for the 2nd drive going right to left. I didnt check the OL for that first drive... but this drive had Samuda at LG, Pouncey at C, and Richie at RG (I would assume this was the line for the previous drive). They opened up with a run up the middle with Miller, who got up field for a quick 5 yards. 2nd play was play action, and the defense blitzed off the right side. Miller wisely pulled up from his play fake and picked up a blitzer, allowing Tannehill to dump it off quickly to JLane for a decent gain and 1st down. Nolan Carol had a nice PBU on a 15 yard dig route.

Then Dion Jordan trots onto the field. His first play, he got down into a 4pt stance at RDE. Off the snap, facing Jon Martin, he exploded off the line, used both hands sweeping Martin's hands inwards (this double handed rip move was literally the same move he was working on with the coaches after practice yesterday) allowing him to turn the corner and get to Tannehill. It honestly looked pretty easy. I joked in the other thread that I didnt know whether to be excited for Jordan getting a sack on his first play of the scrimmage against a starting NFL LT. Or to be terrified that our starting LT just got beat soundly by a rookie on his first snap during scrimmage (1 day after being cleared for contact). Hmmm. However, Jordan racked up 2 more sacks so at least we know Jordan was looking good regardless. I still am anxious(nervous?) to see Martin on Sunday. A lot of questions need to be answered on that front. Anyway, moving on... offense ends up punting.

2nd team offense vs. 1st team defense going left to right. Dimitri Patterson starts at the #2. IMO hes been having the stronger camp in the practices I've seen (only 2 though).

    - Gillislee breaks one to the outside for a nice run and gain of 5+. Vernon lost containment on the right side of the defense as Jeff Adams sealed him inside. A little while later Vernon made up for it though with a strip sack of Moore, getting revenge beating Jeff Adams around the edge on an outside speed rush.

    - One interesting note I thought was worth noting, a pulay or 2 after that sack... just before the snap Odrick and Vernon jumped and swapped spots... putting Vernon inside and Odrick outside at RDE. Was an interesting look, and one that could catch an offense off guard and confuse the OL doing that just before the snap. Poor timing though b/c the offense ran a screen and Gillislee gets a good gain and 1st down. The kid looked pretty quick, got going downhill in a hurry, and made a defender miss in the open field.

    - McNutt beats Carol on a quick slant from Moore to the right side of the offense. Coverage actually wasnt that bad, but it was a good catch and better throw from Moore here. McNutt continues to play well. He also had an impressive diving catch tonight. The preseason games are going to be big for him. I mean, lets face it... we've seen this movie before (Random receiver XYZ does well in camp, gets hyped, flops). So we need to see it in games. But with the WR injuries we've ad, you'd have to think at this point that hes going to make the final 53 if he continues playing like this.

    - #88 (Dont know who this is?) Made a nice catch on a out route against De'Andre Presley.

    - Lee Robinson blew up Gillislee on a run play. He was fired up screaming after the hit.

    - Jonas Gray had some nice here, and made a few more nice runs during the day. Had a nice cutback up the middle for around 10 yards and a couple of other nice runs as well, including punching it in near the goalline for a TD.

Team breaks into 1st down from the opposing 26 for red zone work.

    - Daniel Thomas gains 1 yard on a dive play, and then Tannehill hits Clay on the 2nd play with a pretty pass on a post route over the middle who dived in for a TD. That was quick.

    - 2nd team O vs 1st team defense. Unsuccessful... including a Jeff Fuller drop on a slant from the left (jumped unneccesarily, hate that).

    - They did flex Dion Sims out wide once to the left, but he didnt get looked at and Moore threw an incomplete pass on an attempted check down.

    - 1st team offense vs. 2nd team defense again. Lamar Miller takes a run off the right tackle for 3 yards.

    - Corner route to an open Gibson. It looked like it went through Gibson's hands, but to be fair to him, we didnt have a good angle so it could have been overthrown (has anyone else tweeted about this play?).

    - 3rd down. Keller, matched up with Jonathan Freeney, runs an out route to the right, caught the ball from Tannehill, broke the tackle, and took it down the right sideline for a TD.

    - 2nd team O vs 1st team defense. Jonas Gray up the middle for 3 yards.

    - Vernon gets the sack on Jeff Adams again. Cut and paste the last one. Same rush.

    - 3rd down... Egnew is streaking down the seam. Gets the ball thrown to him AND....... Phillip Wheeler makes a fantastic diving PBU dashing Egnew's chance at glory (or saving him from another drop, lol).

    - 1st team offense vs. 2nd team defense. First play Tannehill throws a swing pass to Daniel Thomas in the left flat who took it for a TD. That was quick.

    Goalline work notes:

    - Miller takes a stretch to the left for an easy TD.
    - Reshad Jones gets a sack on a blitz when Matt Moore tries to take a PA rollout to the left.
    - This is where Jonas Gray punched in a TD.

    2 minute drill.

Situation: 1st team offense gets the ball at their own 35 with 1:39 left in the 2nd quarter.

    - Slant to McNutt for a nice gain and first down.

    - Offense hurries up and snaps it. Dion Jordan is lined up against Jon Martin. Tannehill rolls out right. Seeing the rollout going away from him, Jordan just took the arc really deep and ran around Martin... and chased Tannehill down from behind for the sack. Kid can cover a lot of ground quickly. On a play like that, I dont really know what Martin could have done, lol.

    - Checkdown to Miller for 3 yards.

    - 3rd down. Defense blitzed both A-gaps and caused chaos. The blitzes actually got picked up, but it left Clabo to pretty much block the LDE and the LDT (didn't catch who) by himself. Needless to say it was a quick sack, lol. Punt.

2nd team offense vs. the 1's on their own 35 with 1:21 left in the 4th quarter.

    - Egnew catches an out for 10 yards from Moore.

    - Moore throws a pick 6 to Kelcie McCray.

    - Devlin comes in. Gillislee has another nice run. This time it was a cutback that he bounced out to the right for 9 yards.

    - And then Gillislee fumbles the ball. He was having a pretty damn good practice up until this point. Turnover. Not sure but I think that was his last snap of the night.
Another 2min type drill (didnt note the exact situation, but started around their own 35 again).

    - Dion Jordan lines up in a 2pt stance and rushed off the edge again, but Will Yeatman does a good job of quickly launching back to stay in front of Dion. (insert spin/inside move here and Dion will become really dangerous.)

    - Jonas Gray catches a screen pass for about a 15 yard pickup.

    - Thigpen bounces it outside and gains 4, getting out of bounds. Then he got stuffed the next play.

    - Devlin throws an incomplete pass behind the WR. Wasnt the first time he delivered passes behind the WRs. Struggled with that a bit tonight.

    - Chad Bumphis makes a big play. Either ran an out route from the right or ran a crossing route from left to right (didnt see his presnap alignment), and took it and booked over to and up the sideline into the redzone. Was hard to see the yardage from my angle, but had to be around a 25 yard gain? Kid looked fast.

    - Dion Jordan meets another defender (couldnt catch a number) at the QB for his 3rd sack of the day. This time on Will Yeatman. This time was with a little more power, almost built up a little speed and stuck Will, driving him back a bit to get his hands on the QB.

....and then Will Davis ends the practice for the 2nd straight day with an interception... this one on a pretty damn impressive lunging/diving catch in the redzone for the touchback. This kid has taken his share of beatings this camp... but then he makes plays like this.

And thats that! Its 1am and I have work in the morning... so I'm passing out. But wanted to at least get this done for you guys for the night. Quick summary: 1) Our front 7 is dominant. 2) Dion flashed the pass rushing ability we drafted him for. 3) Tannehill was sharp and efficient, even though he didnt have his top 2 WRs and had a... 4) offensive line that was shaky at times.

    Night!

Offensive line sounds troublesome, but it might just be our defense. Even the backups on the front seven are solid players. Fingers crossed.

    Thanks for writing this all

I'm not too worried about the O-Line quite yet. Always takes time to gel and there are a lot of guys moving in and out. I'll be worried if they're still not playing well come late August.

    Thanks as always, Nasty.

Barry Jackson reported there were nearly 23,000 in attendance last night - that's not bad at all for a scrimmage? Did it seem that full Nasty?

They weren't letting the fans spread out much, but a little more than half the lower bowl was full. I couldn't see up top to see how many were up there.

You asked the question so I will answer it for you. Most people watching and tweeting agreed it was a drop. I saw a bootleg video of it, and it appeared to be a pretty bad drop. As you say, right through the hands.

There's really nothing Martin could have done on the play. This was another one that was on the bootleg video. It's essentially a coverage/quarterback sack. Jordan earned the first one a lot more than this one, IMO.

I know I seem like a broken record but there's such a double standard about this guy. He may not be long for the roster but it doesn't change the fact that there seems to be a double standard in the reporting. We hear from just about every media source about Egnew's drop on a ball thrown well behind him in the end zone, but only half of them seem to be reporting Brandon Gibson's drop in the end zone. Meanwhile we hear when some other player has 1 catch for 10 or 11 yards but we don't hear that Egnew had a catch. Oh well. Probably will be better when he's gone.

Sounds like classic speed to power. Sometimes people pretend he's never shown this on his tape but I find it pretty frequently.

I still think he might make the roster. He's still making mistakes, dropping balls, etc, by all accounts, but then you read about him making a great catch or being wide open after a burst of speed, and you think he might still be intriguing (and frustrating) enough to the coaches/GM to keep him on to see if he can gain the consistency. The injury to Binns, and the apparent lack of interest in keeping a true FB, might leave a roster spot open to him.

I'd just add with respect to the TE position, Miami kept 4 of them on the 53 man roster most of last year, and even had 5 at the end of the season after they signed Kyle Miller. Just for the record, they were: Anthony Fasano, Charles Clay, Jeron Mastrud, Michael Egnew, and Miller.

Joe Philbin's Packers' squads always had a track record of keeping 4 or more TEs on the roster.

My one question about Jordan is they plan on using him as a situational pass rusher, what are their plans when the opponent goes to a hurry up/ no huddle offense that makes subs difficult.

Thanks! That's what I thought. Looked liked a great throw that Tannehill dropped in there, but went right through his hands.

Agreed that when Jordan is able to run such a wide arch, it's hard to expect the LT to get much of a hand on him. However, it didn't seem like Tannehill held onto the ball for a long time, Jordan just covered a lot of ground quickly. The 1st sack was much more skilled and impressive though, no doubt. But I wouldn't poo poo this play as nothing, b/c you still have to be able to haul *** to run the arc he did and still track down Tannehill who was rolling away from him. If the QB senses him in that spot and properly throws it away, it isn't a sack for Jordan, but still a valuable pressure.

I try to report everything I can, both good and bad, lol. There's obviously stuff that I'll miss with everything that's going on at the pace it's moving, but I try not to let any biases effect my reporting and try to be as objective as possible.

I do agree with some though that have mentioned that the WR injuries could make it easier for him to get a roster spot.

Yep, that's exactly what it was. Came off the edge, but instead of turning the corner to try to go around him, turned and went at him. Mixing in a power move like that will be quite effective if Tackles keep launching backwards off balance to counteract that speed edge rush.

Am I missing why there wouldn't be a double standard? One is fighting for a roster spot while the other is on the roster very cozy. So obviously people are going to be more tuned into the guy fighting for a roster spot messing up. Are you saying you would of been as interested about Hartline going in there and dropping a pass as you would McNutt? No. I am sorry to break it to you, because I know you dislike him. But Brandon Gibson is a Miami Dolphin, Sunday through the last game of the season.

I think we're kind of reaching and stretching for positives. Not really necessary. That sack wasn't going on anyone's highlight reel. Tannehill held the ball too long and gave the defense the sack, and looking at his body language you could tell he knew it.

I wasn't talking about you. I was talking about how I can read Barry Jackson's recap and it'll make no mention of Gibson also having a drop in the end zone, but he does make sure to note Egnew's end zone drop, or I could read other beat writers' recaps and they'll make note of other players having caught a ball but not Egnew. You're one of maybe two sources I've seen make reference to Egnew having caught a ball for about 10 or 11 yards.

Hope he does more than just mix it in. Some of the most effective pass rushers, this is pretty much their top tool in the tool kit. Take the tackle back and then cross his face to get to the quarterback.

Cornelius Washington showed a vicious speed to power move at the Senior Bowl that he wasn't allowed to show very often at Georgia.

Easily. No, in fact, more interested. Brian Hartline dropping touchdown passes is a hell of a lot more relevant to the Dolphins' season than Marvin McNutt dropping touchdown passes.

The fact that Brandon Gibson is going to play more on Sundays makes him dropping wide open touchdowns MORE relevant. Not less.

We will differ on the opinion on this then. I agree it isn’t going on any type of highlight reel… and I stated that. That was a play that didn’t take a lot of skill… just speed/athleticism. However, again I don’t think that should just be brushed aside. Tannehill shouldn’t have taken the sack. He should have thrown that away once Jordan closed in on him. But Tannehill still didn’t sit on that ball forever. The snap was at 15:42 and Jordan pulls up at 15:45. That’s 3 seconds, right around the time the pass should be coming out. That’s a good pressure IMO. I don’t feel that is stretching for a positive, but you value that play differently than I do apparently. The Martin sack >>> this one… no doubt about it. But applying pressure in 3 seconds while running the wide arc he did and chasing down the QB across the field is no small task IMO. That’s pure speed/athleticism… which is one of the reasons we valued him at #3.

I think Egnew actually had 2 catches around that length, one on an out and one in the seam. I didnt really touch on him too much in the report b/c it was after 1am and I was trying to get that damn report done... waking up at 6:30 for work, lol. But from what I can remember he had a couple catches that displayed the speed we drafted him with... and had that drop on the pass that was behind him.

Well, between that speed-to-power move… and just a plain inside swim or spin move… it will be there for the taking for him. If he gets them down, they’ll be there at will for him. Just off practice, you can see the LTs jumping backwards to try to beat Jordan to that spot on the arc. I assume once some hard film comes out on him… that’s all LTs are going to be doing until Jordan dictates otherwise.

He ran completely unabated to the quarterback because of Tannehill's pocket management. That 3 seconds is enough time for most players to cover about 25 yards of distance or more, unabated. If you want to be impressed by that sack then go right ahead. It was not a play to go on Dion Jordan's highlights, lowlights, anylights. It was a play that goes on Tannehill's lowlights.

I think I saw him on clips have another catch during skeleton drills (not actual scrimmage). Could that be what you're thinking of?

The one thing that makes me nervous about Jordan is we're talking about things we would have talked about with him two years ago. Jordan's been making tackles jump way back to guard his speed rush for a long time and we always keep waiting for him to learn to take advantage of that. His senior year he didn't do that near enough. He did use some speed to power but not enough. He didn't really use inside moves, spins, or much else to great effect. The frustration is there and I think that's what his coordinator was alluding to when he said that he thinks Jordan is near his ceiling as a pass rusher. Doesn't mean he's right, though.

I would say the fact that it was a sack would chalk it up to a lowlight for Tannehill, but had Tannehill properly thrown it away I woudnt consider that a lowlight. Are you saying you feel it was a poor roll out? Or are you just saying he should have thrown it away? I've said multiple times that it wasnt a super impressive play that involved much skill from Jordan, just speed/athleticism. And that I agree that you wouldnt put what should have been a non-technique based pressure on a highlight film. But I also dont think that just any DE can get there that quickly running the wide arc that he did to force the pressure in 3 seconds.

Thats where you and I will just have to agree to disagree my man... :wink2:

It may have been in a 7v7 vs. an actual scrimmage. By "skeleton drill", do you mean a walk thru or a full speed 7v7? The play I'm thinking of happened at full speed, but it may not have been in the actual scrimmage but instead in a 7v7. Getting hard to remember, lol.

Well that is absolutely going to be thing thing that will seperate him as far as a pass rusher, and determine what type of "teir" he gets to as a pass rusher. To get into that elite tier (where we are hoping he'll get to when drafting him #3), he'll need to get that. All the tools are there though. We'll have to see how hard he works on his craft, and how hard he works on improving.

A positive to note is that Martin sack came on the rip move the coaches were working on him with after practice the day before. I’m not familiar enough with Jordan’s pass rushing moves that he used in college (I’ll lean on you for that :wink2:), and whether that move on Martin was a regular move for him in college. But if that double handed rip wasn’t something that he did all the time in college, that would be a good sign of him translating what the coaches are teaching him and working with him on, into results in live action. Obviously a spin move is a little more intricate than a double handed outside rip, but even an inside swim move would do the trick in those situations where the LT is launching back… and I feel like that is something the coaches could work with him on and something he could add (at least easier than adding a spin). And I’m assuming the coaches will work with him on something like that. So, if can keep translating coaching into results in live action… we having something quite promising on our hands.

What I mean is, I would continue to discuss that play from Dion Jordan's standpoint, except it's not worth the time it would take me to type a single thing after the period at the end of this sentence

    .

    7 on 7 is a skeleton drill. I wouldn't ever call it a scrimmage.

Ya, just didnt know if you meant "walk through" when you said skeleton drill (I dont give plays during walk thrus any credit/merit obviously). I would guess the other catch I was thinking of was probably during 7v7s...

Its at 15:42. Both of us agree that the play isnt highlight worthy, or something to make much of a fuss about. Where we disagree is that I still feel it is a play worth noting...

Thanks man... watching on youtube and slowing the speed down to 0.25x, JMartin definitely got his hands on Djordan, but wasn't able to keep him engaged and Jordan simply used his speed to move around him.

Also, Misi (#55) was making a showing as well on the near side...

Dunno... I find it a little more impressive that Jordan was engaged briefly by Martin, brushed Martin's hands off, and was still fast enoung to fly around Martin to get to Tannehill. That is better than a completely free pass at the QB IMO...

Misi best the crap out of Clabo with a little dipidity dip, Jordan would of been in position to strip sack the Qb..

From the still shot it looks like there is room to step up, but in real time, unless your Russell Wilson or Andrew luck, I don't think the Qb had much of a chance.

Thanks for that bro! In live speed from my angle I couldn’t even tell that Martin was able to get out to get a hand on him. Looked like Jordan just ran a really wide arc around him. That definitely does make the play more impressive. Still definitely not his best play of the day (that 1st sack on Martin was awesome)... but thats still a solid play from him.

No problem... there was A LOT happening at 15:43... in that 1 second Martin engaged, was shed by DJordan, then Dion was off and around, leaving Martin to clutch at him and lunge for him for behind.

Clabo also had his hands full with Misi and shoved him in the back away from Tannehill as Jordan was closing in.

The other thing I liked seeing was that Samuda had Starks engaged down field and had shut Randy completely out of the play while Martin and Clabo were chasing and grabbing at Jordan and Misi...

Really appreciate those. After looking at all of them, Tannehill definitely should have stepped up in that pocket instead of dashing to the right. Live, I thought it was more of a designed roll out. Clearly not though...

Not sure Tannehill could have. The ball was in the air to Tannehill at 15:42 and was snapped high and slightly to his right. Tannehill caught it and with his momentum going backwards, continued on until he could set up. By 15:43 Misi had Clabo back into the passing lane and Jordan was coming around Martin. As Clabo was now turned around and pushing Misi from behind, Tannehill had to bring it down and run right.

Click the "gear" symbol on the youtube link and select the 0.25 speed and watch it from 15:42 to 15:44. There was a hellova lot happening. Misi was fast as hell in that play...

Bottom line, both our tackles got schooled..lol..Misi looks like he may be a bad boy this year, he continually works on his physique during the offseason, we know he's relentless, we might have an ascending player here..

Problem is #95, Jordan will play LB sooner or later, or Vernon will shift, and Misi is a FA this year when we have a host of FA's.

that kinda sucks, lets say Misi improves this year, there's no scenario where we can do it?

Have to agree Tannehill was sacked, more importantly Dion did a great job and showed some serious speed coming all that distance in such a short time. As I posted in the other thread about the scrimmage our OL worry's me but our DL looks to my untrained eye like they could be serious contenders for top 1-2 DL in the league this year. Dion is going to have a learning curve, but if he gets 7 sacks in his rookie year like Olivier Vernon did last year in his rookie season, and Vernon improves, those two should take pressure off Cam Wake or at least occasionally free up Wake to be even more dangerous this season. I am very psyched about our D this season.

And BTW thanks again Nasty for another great write up, really enjoy reading them and appreciate your effort in posting them. I was at the scrimmage as you know but couldn't even touch the details you provide. (I'm blaming a lot of it on my bad right eye  )
