Pretty simple question really. I wanted to get this poll up before we see him in game action this Sunday. I just have a feeling he's going to impress this preseason with his receiving ability in the second half of games as he goes against lesser competition. And I do think he's going to make the team. I'm a nut!
He might make it, doesn't mean he deserves to. Even if he does make the roster, will he even be active on game day?
Brandon Myers? If Egnew doesn't make the team, I think that's a big strike against whoever made the pick (I've heard it was Philbin who really liked him). We passed over three very solid WR's in Sanu (who I wanted), Chris Givens, and TY Hilton. Given the huge need at the position last year (and to a smaller extent this year), it reflects poorly on an organization who hasn't drafted a credible WR since... I don't even know.
My guess is "No". I think that in the end we'll want our third or fourth TE to contribute on STs and he doesn't. IMO you keep him if you see enough "special" from him as a receiver that it makes up for his liability as a blocker and his lack of contribution on STs. I don't (and never have) seen enough there. I think he makes the occasional spectacular catch, but on the vast majority of the pass plays is just another TE even as a receiver. The flashes are just too infrequent for me to justify stashing a non-contributing player on the roster. I'd rather keep an extra WR, RB or even a defensive player that I see as promising.
Still, it was a dumb pick if he ends up getting cut given the talent and need of WR. But anyway, I thought Egnew was having a good camp?
There is really no basis for this fear. Jeff Ireland has shown the ability to self-evaluate and cut his losses.
Agreed, but the rumor after that draft was that it was a Philbin pick. And regardless, I have faith that Philbin makes the call on who to keep or cut. I don't see Ireland's ego being a factor in those decisions.
I don't think you will see him cut THIS year just based on the fact that Ireland doesn't want to admit he drafted a buster.
Never heard that rumor. Interesting that yet another "rumor" absolves Ireland of a horrible decision. What a charmed life
I didn't say I don't think he'll cut him. But if he doesn't, I believe that would play a part in the decision.
If he gets cut, so be it. I don't know that he will though. It's not like we're hearing every day in practice about him doing horribly. He's catching balls. He's just not necessarily standing out in a good way and he's down the depth chart. But that could change in preseason pretty easily.
That rumor came out immediately after the draft, long before anybody saw him as a success or bust. So it has nothing to do with absolution.
Might have the best job in the world...the coaches and other front office execs get the blame for the bad picks, he gets credit for the few good picks, he gets to disrespect players' families and even his own team's fans, and he gets to keep his job even though his team fails to win half their games every year. He is blessed!
This is what really kills me. Jeff Ireland gets no blame for anything that happened prior to 2011 but people somehow find lots of de facto ways to credit him with things that happened during that span such as the signings of Cameron Wake, Randy Starks, Richie Incognito, Brian Hartline, etc. Then supposedly Jeff Ireland finally goes "on the clock" starting in 2011 and yet we still find ways to try and sneakily steal the bad picks out of his pile. It all looks pretty disingenuous to me and I'd just assume sit back and say he's been the GM the whole time, and if there was anything he really objected to then he could have stopped it, and so he's responsible for all of it. That's why I have to credit Disgustipate. He doesn't run away from that at all. He just believes that even if you account for all of it, he's done a good job. Maybe I disagree with that, but so be it.
Why would Ireland not wanna admit to cutting a draft bust, yet he just cut Clyd Gates a year or 2 after he was drafted?
No, he was right. And I was wrong. Brian Hartline is a credible WR. Probably the first since Chambers, now that I've thought about it. Having said that, I'm not a Brian Hartline fan. I find him to be extremely limited as a #2. He doesn't break tackles and doesn't score TD's.
Omar Kelly Michael Egnew makes a good block on Jonas Gray's touchdown run at the goal line. Yes, I said Michael Egnew!
I voted that he will...not because he's overly impressed in camp so far, he's been "OK" from how I see it, but I think he'll improve his stock in a few pre-season games...he knows his *** is on the line.
Honestly, some fans could pick apart any of the 32 teams personnel depts. Conversley, there are fans that would defended any of them to the death. All outspoken knuckleheads that are portrayed as the majority when they're not. One sides ignoring all the good work, ephasizing the mistakes, and the others vice versa. There's a happy medium, where nobody rushes to judgement, and sees the big picture moving forward. Ireland already acquired 2 tight ends since Egnews struggles last year. Keller will play his intended role. If he shows enough improvement, which it seems he could be starting to, they'll want to keep him around. We only have Dion sims signed through next year, aside from Egnew. Keller wants a big contract and well have bigger fish to fry. Can Egnew make the roster off the potential that got him drafted in the 3rd again ? Probably not, he'll have to produce, but luckily the professionals have some patience with young players, unlike fans that would come to a conclusion after a slow rookie year, or a drawing... Lol.
Keeping Keller, Sims and Clay. Guess Egnew can find another team. Sent from my Transformer TF101 using Tapatalk HD
I voted Yes based on Miami keeping 5 TEs last year, and Joe Philbin's Packers teams had a history of keeping 5 or more PLUS a FB. Even if Egnew is not that 4th TE, I still think Miami keeps a 4th TE.
Watch him have like 6 catches for 132 yards and a TD tomorrow night. Dol-fans' heads collectively explode.
That is if he is targeted 20 times....lol I think he'll be around until final cuts are made, but then, none of us really have a clue what the coaches will do. Hate to see a pick that high get cut so soon.
