Lol...why can't we draft ONE offensive lineman worth a damn outside of the 1st round? Is it really that hard?
I'm guessing that answer is "yes" considering the majority of left tackles in the NFL are 1st rounders IIRC. What do you think is supposed to happen when you put mid and late round tackles against 1st & 2nd round pass rushers?
Armon Binns being out for the season was also National news. In today's NFL....doesn't take much to go National in the offseason. Take a poll of NFL fans in a sports bar and see who actually even knows who Johnathan Martin is.
They don't write articles everyday about struggling players, I wish I could pretend he is being picked on or just another story...but all signs point to him being a very weak link on our football team this year.
Eh, he settled in during the last practice, so perhaps his arrow is pointing upwards now. I'm concerned about JMart, but don't think the season hinges on him per se. Will say if he continues to struggle can we surgically implant tacky gloves on Matt Moore's hands? He may wind up starting some games for us.
They basically just cited Mando. No need to write it when our own writers do a good job of pointing it out themselves. Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 4 Beta
He didn't say left tackles. He said offensive linemen. And he has a point about this OL. Though we're all generally overrating the LT position, which is a little strange considering how we just saw 5 years of good to great LT play and went 7-9 a bunch of times.
I will tell you why we cant draft a oline man and his Name is Jeff Ireland with help from the scouting department. I think our troubles are going to continue as long as Jeff Ireland is gm plus our scouting department has been the biggest weakness for 20 years. if teams that draft after Miami drafts have success then Miami needs to pick better players .
Not sure how its gonna work out but I'm on lets wait and see bangwagon. I DO BELIEVE, this is a nfl network trying to create a story for tonights game
You guys crack me up. After taking Jake and Mike in the first round we hear about how we better not take any lineman in the first round. Now it's "what do you expect when we are using mid round lineman". There really is no pleasing you all. Sent from my DROID RAZR HD using Tapatalk 2
Still not worried. I think JM will be fine in the long run. These guys have 5 games and a months worth of time to find their groove and settle in.
I think martin has the preseason to prove he can be the LT. Otherwise i would go to plan B, whether that means trading for albert or using someone else.
Since when is left tackle not an offensive lineman? Obviously it was implied that he's referring to left tackle/Jon Martin considering the thread is about Jon Martin/left tackle and considering Ireland's regime has only drafted TWO linemen- Pouncey & Martin. Then you add in how much time LB spends questioning Martin's ability and Ireland as a GM for drafting him.
You're doing that thing where you take a few people's opinion and act as if everyone on the forum shares it. Then try to call everyone out on it.
Heck, the Packers made the playoffs with Marshall F**cking Newhouse at LT and Tannehill is as mobile as Rodgers.
Not I, "franchise LT" is bull****, it's a Parcellian era construct left over from LT terrorizing Qb's in the mid 80's. I'd take Dion Jordan 10 times out of 10 over Lane Johnson.
No I'm calling out the people who act like that. If that isn't you, then you don't have to worry about it. I figured it was more polite than calling out specific posters. But on a side note, a large part of this board [warning generalization] is pretty bi-polar. Sent from my DROID RAZR HD using Tapatalk 2
wow aquafin, I never knew you hated Ireland, is this new? here's an idea, how many teams can you name that don't have a weakness at least one of their 5 offensive lineman positions? IMO, when they gel together, we will have 4 good offensive lineman and one very average (at best) LT. It's a hole, yes, but one that we can compensate for if it's a weakness. We had a choice, pick Dion Jordan or one of the stud 3 LTs. Personally, I'll take the great pass rusher (hopefully) anytime over the stud LT.
I think JM can improve over his last year's performance, but he hasn't really shown that yet. Is there still time? Of course. Wouldn't hurt my feelings if I saw an article saying, "Dolphins Left Tackle Martin Spends Time with Legendary Dolphin Richmond Webb" for a little bit of guts training.
Armando seems to be the one banging the gong the most on Martin. And if you guys remember he was one of the principal writers on the Albert story before the draft. He wants to show the Dolphins he .told them so. I think it has been said already. He has the preseason to show. And if he struggles let us see what Philbin has in order. I am hoping Vernon and Jordan are that good.
It's just the usual. One of our local beat writers creates drama and it gets picked up by some national writer. It doesn't matter that Martin looked better the following day. Then the "any excuse to bash Ireland" crowd joyfully jumps in.
It may not depend on just Martin, but it just might depend on the overall play of the offensive line. Clabo's strength is in run blocking, not in pass protection. The RG position is still a huge question mark and we already know that Martin is a huge question mark at LT. So that leaves Pouncey and Incognito as the most reliable starters on the offensive line. This unit may develop and become a decent offensive line over time, but until they do, the running game is likely to suffer and Tannehill might spend a great deal of time picking himself up off the ground after being sacked.
Dual edged sword, so JMart is struggling b/c Jordan and Vernon are toasting him, Clabo can't pass block and Wake is having a quite camp going up against him? We "know" Kraken has "BMF" on his pass rushing portfolio, Clabo is handling him.
Panthers have 2 PBs on the line. 1st and 2nd rounder at LT and C respectively. We have a UDFA at RT (albeit average but getting better), an unknown at RG and a 2nd rd project at LG. Guess where is strong? Where we invested was where we got dividends, and where we didn't was where we have had issues. Otah was different, no one saw his injury issues. From what I saw however, Martin looked bad. really bad.
He referred to the entire unit, thus all five positions. You are the only one who sees "offensive line" and reads "left tackle".
Me too. Tanny may not have the pocket awareness yet that Rodgers has, but Tanny is at least as good if not a better pure athlete. The pocket awareness should be better this year, and continue to improve down the road
In his first season as a starter in 2011, Newhouse was the worst OT in the league. He improved to middle of the pack among OTs in 2012, his 2nd season. Martin will improve in his 2nd season too. Newhouse was a worse all around OT in 2011 than Martin was in 2012.
Entire offense looked bad. Very bad start. If Miami gets off to a slow start in the regular season - it will be a long season. The worst was Dallas Thomas. That was awful. While it's true it's only the first game - and there is a month to improve - there are plenty of rookies who flash right away. You know things are really scary when there is a lot of concern should J.Martin go down.
