Read option.. Did anyone catch that clay Matthews interview where he talked about he's gonna have to change his game when facing Kaepernik, he says, paraphrasing here, " I'm the guy that likes to come after the Qb, just get after them and hunt, but I can't do that with guys like this, I have to play paddy cake with the tackle, hesitate and read what's going on and adjust"..." I think our coaches have a gameplan that will help us" It was a a riveting interview to see this great pass rusher humbled and admit that it takes away what he does best...now I'm not dillusional to think that Tannehill can replicate what Kaepernik can do, but just the formation itself and some simple execution by the Qb, who does have some athletic ability, and did run it in college, and did post a 10 yard average last year doing it, might go along way to help out our tackles, and might help him get a rhythm in the beginning of the game.. This is how we can come out of the gates fast, this is how we can beat teams with our coaches intellect and our qbs skillset, I hope to see a good amount of it come regular season against teams, after all, we have a Qb that can run and pass, and who doesn't want to make a defense hesitate and think before they play.? Gotta good feeling that we gonna run this stuff..
Or you can line up and run the ball on people. Hard to rush the passer when it's 2nd and 5/3rd and 2 all game long.
Doesn't work unless your QB can make the defense pay with either run or pass which is why CKaep demolished Green Bay's highly overrated defense. Now that's my hope that Tannehill develops into that threat, but I also don't want him running as much as CK. Going into a game with the strategy of doing tons of read option against an aggressive defense with Tannehill is going to get him broken after a few games.
I see no reason to believe that RT can't do what CKap does. The big advantage CKap has is that he'd been running a read-option for about 6 years (HS and college) before going to SF. And in those offenses it wasn't something you did a few times per game. It was something you ran 90% of the time. For him it's almost like breathing at this point. But in general, yes, that's one way to beat great pass rushers. Basically anything that makes them hesitate before pass rushing works. That could be a great running game (especially running at the end), a great screen team, or a read-option.
That interview had me thinking the same things..... Special note: the best edge rushers Martin should have to face all year are Harrison(bengals),williams(bills x2), Suggs(ravens), & Woodley(steelers).
Philbin stated in his interview on Sirius yesterday that they do have some read option stuff in the offence, but only a "little bit of it"
I have never heard anyone call Green Bay's defense anything better than mediocre. Sent from my GT-P3110 using Tapatalk 2
I wouldn'r mind seeing it for a few plays per game but not exclusively. I don't want to see Tanny get hit a lot and I'm sure the coaches feel the same way. Kap, RG3 and Wilson seem to be a different story in their 1st years at the helm. Imo, the Niners and Seattle ran it more often to hide some flaws in their QB. RG3 being the exception. I think he was built for that style of play. With that being said, all of those teams will have to start getting away from that read option play more due to other teams preparing for it now. Two examples being, the Packers playoff game last year (Mathews interview) and our WC from a few years ago.
Good point. All three of those QBs had issues with reading or attacking from the pocket. RT is the reverse. He's better at reading and/or attacking from the pocket than he is at the read-option.
he'll also face Sheard & Mingo (Browns), Umenyiora (Falcons), Chandler Jones twice, and Charles Johnson (Panthers)
I disagree. The pistol is a more versatile attack or formation rather than just a play with a few variations. It's basically a variation of the shotgun. The shotgun has limitations and advantages. It's success depends on how well it's run and it has nearly endless variations. It's not a single play type that gets figured out.
Right...but my point is everybody will put the book together on it and it will be less successful the more it's used.
I do think we'll see a drop off in the read option this year. Teams weren't coached to stop it and you'll see that change this year. It's really a simple matter of the defense sticking to their disciplines. The OLBs will be taught not to go after gore at all and to pop ckap every chance they get. Will that give gore an advantage? Yes. But pop ckap enough and sf will stop running it. That Green Bay defense looked like they didn't even know ckap was allowed to run. It was like they'd seen no film on him and they're DC coached his focus on gore like he is Adrian Peterson.
Discipline and near perfect read/execution by the QB. You think defenses won't have some confusion/deception built-in this year? Easy to bait I'd think.
I think it should be more than a little bit but that's just me...hey if your killing out of your base formations, then screw it, if your struggling a bit, then bust it out.
And therein lies the rub, IMO. I agree with GM. Run the ball well to keep the pass rush at bay. The read option should only be used sparingly and judiciously. Too much and you run a substantial risk of having your QB either go down with injury or get banged up enough to limit his effectiveness.
You'd probably be taken out of the game b/c the running back is running through your hole every time you do that. If it's a fast back like Miller, how many first downs and TDs did you give up b/c you can't handle your responsibility?
The Green Bay defense may be considered mediocre, but their offense certainly isn't mediocre. I have actually heard many individuals call Green Bay's offense one of the best in the entire NFL. If the Packers offense is mediocre to you, exactly what does that make the Dolphins offense?
The problem for Tannehill is that the OL has a problem giving him a pocket to be able to sit back and make his reads. He seems to constantly be forced from the pocket within a few seconds because of breakdowns along the offensive line. Until the weak spots in the offensive line is fixed, Tannehill is going to have trouble being a pocket passer. Personally I think the OL will end up be the downfall of the Dolphins this season. They have very little depth along the line and the RG and LT position remain huge question marks. Even Clabo at RT is known more for his run blocking than his ability as a pass blocker.
The inability to protect is why we need to have this formation as a real part of this offense, we have an example of an elite pass rusher showing frustration and admitting that it takes him completely out of his game, if Tannehill can execute it with some efficiency than his stock goes up and it increases his chances of becoming a good Qb.
Won't matter because there won't be a QB left to play in the game. How many times do you think a coach is going to let his QB get hit cleanly?
Most QBs are big guys now a days. Unless you're hitting him illegally you're not going to knock him out of the game. He doesn't have to wait until you're about to hit him to hand the ball off. This isn't the old a read. All he needs is for the DE to shade over to favor the QB and he's out of position on the back. You do that and you'll be out of the game or losing long before you're knocking any QB out of the game.
Right, could be a lot worse, like playing in the nfc north or east. That list of rushers he faces this year is about as weak as can be. Lucky. We also have the easiest schedule as far as run defenses are concerned. (Avg based off last years #s)
yea it could be worse, doesn't mean the pass rushers he'll face this year are weak. honestly as bad as Martin's been he could make all these guys look like All Pros. Charles Johnson will actually be matched up with Clabo, my mistake, but Chandler Jones has a chance to be a stud this year, and a guy like Kruger can and has lined up on both sides, and I don't think Martin can block him, or Sheard, Suggs, Williams, and Woodley for that matter...maybe Harrison and Umenyiora cuz they're old.
Its not that I'm underestimating these guys, I know I sound that way.... They're just not at the elite level, though some have potential to be very good. Would love to have any of them on this team obviously. Martin was bad last year, I'll give you that, but if he holds up well in Houston that's 3 solid performances in a row. No need to refer to last year, or camp reports.
