Got this fancy Motorola surfboard dual band modem/router. 2.4 ghz g b n. and 5 ghz a n. For some reason one of my laptops and the wireless printer are not picking up the 5ghz ssid. And the laptop I know is 802.11n. I put in n only mode, a/n mode. Won't pick it up. Won't find it. Not to mention, the speed is very good on this thing, but the range is weak sauce. Claims to reach 450 feet. I can't move away 50 feet without it dropping from 100 mbs to 1 mbs. Any idea, thoughts?
Environment. Cinder walls factor in. Do you have microwave ovens running at all times? TVs? Does the card on the laptop handle the n signal at 5ghz? Sent from my phone using Fapatalk 2
The higher the frequency of a wireless signal, the shorter its range. Personally, I disable the 5ghz radio on my router and just use 2.4. 2.4ghz is also better at going thru walls.
Most likely your laptop doesn't handle 5Ghz wifi. Interference likely counts for the signal drop off. Cordless phones are an obvious culprit. Walls and microwaves too.
-try moving the router -look up DIY router antenna signal boosters -try uninstalling and reinstalling your wifi card and see if it picks up the signal then Drink beer while so doing above nerdery
