New 13 minute gameplay video with developer narration. Overlaps about halfway with the previous video. Assassination contracts return from AC2/B.

I like the new menus alot better than AC3s.
    Simple and minimalistic.

Not hard to do. On a reddit thread, the dev team admitted they just sort of slapped AC3's menus together at the last minute. I don't know why… AC2's menus were perfectly functional, and they got better in Brotherhood and Revelations. Not sure why they just ignored those.

I'm having fun with AC3 but there are some things that are annoying me. It's a real pain to shop and buy upgraded items. At least compared to previous games. Also, there's very little combat tutorial. As the bad guys get harder to fight, you have to figure out the different combinations to beat them on your own. I guess that makes it a little more challenging but it can also be frustrating as hell.

I agree that the crafting menu is designed crappily.
And there is a glitch that makes you lose one of your convoy's permamnently.

Oh I haven't even begun to try screwing with the whole stupid crafting/convoy thing. That system is so completely ****ed it's laughable. So is that the only place to get upgraded weapons? Great. I'm getting to the point where I just want to be done with this game so I can get ready for the next one which will hopefully resolve the problems this one has. From what you guys are saying, they've taken care of it. My assessment right now maybe halfway through is it's a moderately enjoyable game with plenty to do but also plenty of flaws.

One of the flaws I forgot to mention is it's kinda messed up that you actually use the hidden blade (as young Connor) before you actually own the hidden blade (killing wolves). Also, kinda screwy that I was able to liberate British controlled forts and turn them to Patriot control over a decade before the war even started (also as young Connor).

Nope. You can buy upgrades at general stores. But their selection is limited, and the best way to get the money to afford the upgrades is to trade via caravan and shipping.

There are so many homestead missions and expansions to be done that you'll be in the area plenty of times. Might as well go to the ledger and manage some trading.

I had the same assessment when playing the PS3 version, but I enjoyed the PC version more. I slowed down, did more side missions, took more time in general. The game is more enjoyable if a. you play it at a slower pace, and b. recognize that it's not as plot-driven as AC2/B/R. This is more of a character-driven game.

Agreed. I understand the logic for it--it's a time-compressed computer simulation of genetic memories, not an accurate chronological recreation of history--but it does come off as weird.

It's interesting that Abstergo's architecture is beginning to resemble the style of Those Who Came Before. Foreshadowing?

I would have posted those if I didn't get home so late.

The underwater element is really interesting to me. So not only is the entire Caribbean an open world, but IT HAS A SECOND LAYER. We're approaching ArmA levels of environment design.

I am guessing they simply ran out of time.
Which doesn't make a lot of sense given that they recorded it to begin with.

Exactly; if it's recorded, then they couldn't have run out of time. Besides, that's what DLC is actually for, to expand on content in the core game.

AC3 was in development for 3 years by the same core team. There's no reason why they should have had to cut stuff like this because of time constraints. It seems like a creative decision. Though why you'd intentionally leave out character development is beyond me.

With the normal preorder, you might get a DLC pack depending on where you order from. That pack will be available normally a couple weeks after release.

    With the deluxe preorder, well…

I think they just gave away the early storyline in that trailer.

Edward seems like a pretty unique assassin, at least. It's going to suck when this and BF4 come out on the same day. Not sure which I'll play first. Probably this.

I really liked the first couple installments of this series. Then, somewhere along the way, it became less about the assassinations and more about Jerry Bruckheimer-ish set pieces and dumb over-story. Even in II, there were a couple instances where all I wanted to do was be an assassin and not have to carry some dumb ***** around in between them. I loved II and Brotherhood, but I saw, with the last expansion of II (Revelations?) where it was going so much that I didn't even pick up the third one or try it at all.

I'm open-minded because the first couple left such a nice impression but Pirate-theme? Maybe not for me. I love the exploration aspect that this one seems to have (something I very much enjoyed about Far Cry 3) but ultimately it's going to be the actual assassination missions that sells it for me personally.

Let me know how they are. I won't be getting a next-gen console for awhile anyways.

3 was made by the same development team as 2. Brotherhood and Revelations were different teams, albeit with the same core directors and writers. (3 had a different writing team and I believe a different director as well.)

It's an open world game, so the pirate theme is a perfect excuse to do that. You get to sail around the entire Caribbean up to the bottom parts of Florida at will. So, yes, you can focus entirely on assassination via the assassin contracts if you want, and you can assassinate the targets however you want. There's a video earlier in the thread that shows an assassination contract where the player allows the target to get to his boat and sail to sea, then chases after, boards the boat, kills the guy, and takes his boat and supplies. Or you could just shoot him at the dock and be done with it. Up to you.

There's of course a central plot, but it should have enough action for you; it's about becoming a pirate, for crying out loud.

I know, it's more of a personal taste. I'm probably just imposing my empty feeling of not having a Tenchu reboot to Assassin's Creed, which isn't fair. I always liked the more stealthy missions that had more to do with unconfrontational infiltration then assassination as opposed to the big action lead-ups to assassinations.

I'm very fickle, but I won't write this game off until I play it by all means.
