I'm glad we did not draft Weeden, and then Richardson, and then trade Richardson. Could be a whole lot worse.

    We got some good players.

Martin would probably be our right tackle and McKinnie would likely stick around as depth or possibly be cut.

And I really wanted Jordan Reed.

To me he was the TE version of Percy Harvin.

    Absolutely.

Actually, I think our best personnel would be Hartline-Gibson-Matthews at WR, Clay at TE, Miller in the backfield. Then run read option about 30% of the snaps.

Wallace is no our best best until we have good enough blocking to give him time to get downfield... AND he develops chemistry with Tannehill. I don't think that happens this season. I have heard of other WRs working with Tannehill after practice, but I don;t hear about Wallace doing so. That's why those receivers have chemsitry with Tannehill and Wallace doesn't. When Wallace decide to act like a pro and show more commitment to his craft and team, then he'll be worthy of putting on the field and produce more for us.

Obviously you DO want Wallace out there, since his speed keeps the defense stretched vertically, but I think the % of snaps he sees should be reduced commensurate with his productivity, and Matthews' snaps increased.

But that won't happen because the organization will be criticized for making a $60million mistake. *I* don;t think signing Wallace was a mistake... because by next year, with better OL protection, more time to throw, and a nother year to develop that chemistry I think he WILL pay dividends for us... but right now we are playing him more than he deserves simply because of his price tag.

you don't believe these ireland cultists are really going to give you direct answers do you? It's all about deflection with them when it comes to jeffy's accountability.

If you're referring to the thread starter his join date says 2010 of jan. That's your definition of new?

soooo it's common practice for coaches NOT to play their best players? All this time I thought coaches wanted to win.

And so it begins. You're "not even an ireland fan" or not an ireland fan now? b/c based on past posts you're securely in the pro ireland column and it is quite a list. You guys took a stand, man up & stick with it.

I have a follow up to thread starter ET7's question. Was the fanbase's enthusiasm going into the draft rewarded? 5 picks in the first 3 rounds, 5 PICKS in the first 3 ROUNDS, 5 PICKS! IN THE FIRST 3 ROUNDS!! 'member that?

Now, I believe Jordan will be a playmaker, but he's 1 player. How does one squander an opportunity like that and remain employed? Will we ever be in the same position again? Highly unlikely.

What exactly is there to deflect? At a certain point if the team continues to under performs and there is strong public pressure, he will be fired.

That doesn't in any meaningful way address how well he's done the job, how his guys have performed, etc. and so on. To do that accurately you have to have some idea what "normal" is, and compare the GM to that. It's not all roses, but when you do that you absolutely cannot come to the conclusion that Jeff Ireland is a bad GM.

His hit % isn't below average, and pretty much every year he's been here the Dolphins have gotten multiple players whom have performed at elite levels. What exactly are you imagining a good GM looks like?

I find it kind of ridiculous to complain about draft picks being brought along slowly and blaming it on the GM. That is a coaching decision. If you want to blame the GM for the injury to Taylor since there were known health issues, that's at least logical. But the decision on whether to play Jordan or Sims is completely up to the coach's discretion. That's not being an apologist. That's basic understanding of the roles that people have in the organization and placing responsibility on the appropriate parties.

No. I haven't been "pro-Ireland" in quite a long time. I've been neutral on him for the past few seasons and I've said that quite a few times over the past year. I have said pro-Ireland things in the past when good things needed to be said. When he brings in a player like Brent Grimes, for instance, I'm going to defend him and give him kudos for it. And when he screws up, like the offensive line, for instance, I'm going to ridicule him. When it comes to Ireland, I call it like I see it. He's been underwhelming for sure, but he has done some good things. Now, if we don't have a successful season, he should be fired. Which is another thing I've been saying all off-season.

It probably looks like I'm pro-Ireland a lot because the constant talk and ridicule of him can get annoying and I like to bring another side to the discussion, but I'm not.

And as I've said before, people who consistently rip Ireland like to label people as "Ireland supporters" just because we don't share the same hatred for him. Just because I don't make every other post an Ireland bash fest doesn't mean I'm a supporter. And it gets ridiculous to keep assuming otherwise.

What is the definition of elite? We have a ton of good players on this team. They may not be "elite" but they're players you can win with.

You guys take waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too much offense to being labeled Ireland supporters. If you don't want him fired, you support him as an employee of the Miami Dolphins; hence, Ireland supporter.

There's nothing wrong with it. It's your opinion and you're all entitled to it. I can't for the life of me understand why posters like yourself will spend so many keystrokes defending the man and then get so angry when someone calls you a supporter. Homer, fanboy, apologist, etc I can see where you might take offense. Supporter does not suggest any of those things, IMHO.

Those are the only 2 I would put in that category right now. We have some guys in Jordan, Tannehill and maybe Wallace that could be elite but aren't there yet. Its not good looking right now.

In terms of what I was talking about?

    '08- Jake Long, Randy Starks
    '09- Cameron Wake
'10- Reshad Jones(potentially Jared Odrick if he continues at this level)
    '11- Mike Pouncey

If we're going to define it as Pro Bowlers or guys whom have played at a high level here, I'd add:

    '08- Chad Pennington
    '09- Jake Grove
    '10- Brandon Marshall, Richie Incognito
    '11- Reggie Bush
    '13- Brent Grimes

At a certain point the semantics of being labeled "Ireland supporter" may actually be the most compelling thing for someone operating under that label to contend with, given all the rigor put into this.

Based on the way Reshad Jones has played this season, he doesn't belong on that first list. You could make an argument he belongs on the second list, though.

What I find most interesting about Disgustipate's list is that if you were to pare it down to just the post-Parcells era which so many of Jeff Ireland's staunchest proponents continue to claim should be the sole source of evaluation, all you have is one elite player...Mike Pouncey. Then you've got Reggie Bush who was kind of good here but voluntarily ditched after two years, and Brent Grimes who is here on a one-year deal.

Personally, my list does look a lot like Disgustipate's, except without Jake Grove on it and with Reshad Jones in the second group rather than the first. I've been consistent in my belief that Jeff Ireland needs to be evaluated for his total time in Miami. But those that have argued against me over the years, I wonder what legs they stand on in saying that Ireland has picked up elite talent for us. Not many.

IMO there'd be more players on that list if Sparano had been able to develop players and make sound player evaluation decisions on the OLine. DThomas, EMathis, Satale, etc... have done quite nicely elsewhere after being jettisoned by Sparano and Degugs. Sparano keeping Jake Long playing late in meaningless preseason games is also where Long's injuries started...

Would you agree that there is a definite faction on this board who believe Ireland has done a poor job as Dolphins GM?

If so would you also agree that there is a definite faction who disagree with the faction that believe Ireland is doing a poor job as Dolphins GM?

If yes to both, can you please tell me what one may refer to the latter mentioned faction, those who disagree with the faction who believe Ireland is doing a poor job as GM, without offending anyone?

IMO humble opinion biggest disappointment for me in this draft was Dallas Thomas. They tried him at LG , briefly in practice and that failed. They tried him at RG and he could not even beat out John Jerry. To be the top of the third round pick and even be active on gameday, especially how poor our backups are, is horrible. McKinnie is going to be an improvement over Jon Martin and Jon Martin is going to be an improvement over Clabo so that's a positive right there. I do not expect miracles in the NE game but should look better in 2-3 games with this set up which will make the entire Oline look better. We still need an impact RB. Our guys are decent but impact players ? IMO no. we have nobody that can push the pile when needed RB wise. As far as Tannehill/Wallace chemistry etc, I have no clue of whats going on there. Have to admit he is not getting the ball a lot but when we do get it to him, he drops it a lot of times on what appear to be easy catches. They are certainly going to keep Martin at RT next year which means we need a LT and RG and this should be a better then decent Oline. John Jerry will be history IMO. along with Clabo, McKinnie possibly Garner, the kid from Philly, forget his name and if Dallas Thomas comes into OTAs next year like he is now ? either cut or traded.

I know Ireland takes a lot of heat but I want to know who is running our scouting dept for offensive lineman the last few years. Whoever they are they have no business being in the NFL as scouts. Ireland only takes what is given to him, he does not do the scouting with excpetion of going to one of the Sr. Bowls and such. On the other hand never was a Mike Sherman person. Lets face it, when a team hires the OC son in law as QB coach, who in himself has little to no experience ? Not good. Some people may think Sherman is a great play caller and know what? sometimes he is but when good plays are needed this guy seems to outsmart himself. His play calling was a big question mark at A & M or lets say his decision making. At GB it was easy with a guy named Farve under center. Heck, he would make most of us regular people look like great coaches LOL

Ireland has, on numerous occasions, espoused his belief in building for the long term. 5 of those guys on this list aren't even here anymore, and of those left, only Wake and Pouncey could probably be deemed to be truly elite players.

IMO, I think this whole Ireland argument tends to jump off center quite a bit. I don't believe the question is one of Ireland being a truly bad GM. I think that's borne out of frustration and hyperbole. But unless things change fairly soon I'm not sure he rises above a C-. And if you want to build a team that's truly competitive for 5-10 years, "Doesn't suck" doesn't really cut it, either.

Wanting him to lose his job doesn't mean you hate the guy.

Had he been fired at the end of last season, do you think there would've been one talking head, columnist, or beat writer, local or national, that would've came to his defense or argued that we made the wrong decision? No, everyone would have agreed that it was the right decision and many would have said his dismissal was long overdue, because we all know the case for him to be fired is much stronger than the case that he's done enough to keep his job, which is why the vast majority of the fanbase either wants him gone or are neutral on him like you. The only reason he still has his job now is because our owner is a fool who will soon regret the decision to keep him (if he hasn't already).

I don't think that matters. The decision to initially acquire a player, and then to retain them are two entirely separate decisions. Letting a player walk doesn't mean acquiring that player was a bad decision, especially when unforeseen circumstances arise.

Acquiring Jake Long was a good decision. Allowing him to walk was also a good decision, because the reasons behind his decline weren't something you could reasonably expect to predict.

That's different from Justin Smiley, for example, because while he did play well, he was someone you can reasonably have expected to have had to let go because of injury. Which is what happened.

I'd argue that there are lots of people whom believe Jeff Ireland is a truly bad GM, and I think Jeff Ireland is pretty easily a solid "B" as a GM. An average GM has a lower % of successes, and less high-quality players.

Personally I don't think Pouncey's play has dropped off. I think he's had fewer chances to stand out, which is more of a position-impact thing. Though I was wrong about Pouncey not being worth the 15th overall pick, that was one of my arguments against it. I thought yes he's an awesome center, better than his brother, kind of rare actually, but that the opportunity for impact at his position is small and too dependent on others.

He's suffering from that right now, in my opinion. But overall I think he's been playing pretty stellar football.

Really? Ireland supporter is a degrading term? Then please, same honest question I posed to Disgustipate - How should one refer to someone who believes Ireland is doing an adequate job as Miami Dolphins GM that would not be offensive?

It's funny to me that one side of this debate can be so bent out of shape from being called a "supporter" while using words like "basher / hater / fanatic, etc." Not accusing you personally of that but we all know it's a label thrown at myself and others.
