Well, I was wishing that we would have picked up a WR in the draft to round out a solid 5, and I'm wishing more so now. After the injury to Gibson, more will obviously be required of Wallace, Hartline and Matthews. As to Wallace- good Lord. The lack of production is one thing, but what I never expected, especially coming from Pittsburgh, was Wallace looking downright timid on the field. I noticed that accutely at first in the Saints game- he got shut down and pushed around. I thought that maybe that could be due to, in part, his having to go up against his best friend, the Saints DB covering him- I forget his name. Anyway, that was bad- and alarming. Then again, I gave it somewhat of a pass, hoping that it was a one-off because of that rare dynamic going on in that game with his best friend. But- in the games since then I've played closer attention, and Wallace is getting punked out there, out physicaled and pushed around. There's not even the Hakeem Nicks "I wanna get paid next year, screw this year just don't hurt me" excuse- Wallace got paid and paid plenty. This soft play, this mind set, this lack of production, better change and change quick or we have a major problem on our hands. Draft picks in the game: 2nd rd Jamar Taylor- was he there yesterday? 3rd rd Will Davis- was he there yesterday? 3rd rd Dallas Thomas- was he there yesterday? 4th rd Jelani Jenkins- was he there yesterday? 4th rd Dion Sims- 1 catch 4 yards, but at least he showed up. On a dollar per yards basis, as least he was a steal compared to Mike Wallace. DE Devin Taylor, a decent OT, a decent OG and one of the many WRs available in the 2013 draft are looking pretty good right now. Btw Rob Ninkovich had quite a game yesterday- he's playing well, of course Welker is playing well, Vontae and Sean Smith are playing well, Mike Wallace and the rookies other than Dion Jordan are sucking wind. Note: Da'Rick Rogers is on the Colts main roster, we'll see if he picks up some of the slack after the Reggie Wayne injury. Who do we have to add to the roster to replace Gibson who's nearly as good as Rogers? Buckle up Jeff Ireland, a big storm is coming and this might prove to be your last cruise on the S.S. Miami Dolphins. If this trajectory continues, I don't see it as a stretch for Stephen Ross to clean house and replace both Ireland and Philbin, probably Mike Sherman, too.
A losing season this year guarantees Ireland is gone. The coaching staff I'm not that sure about, but I wouldn't saddle another GM with a coach unless the coach had some record of success, like Rex.
There are 32 teams in the NFL. What makes you think that if the Dolphins fire their front office and coaching staff, there will be anyone more talented willing and available to take their place. We went through this two years ago. Miami was like a pariah to talented coaches and managers. At this point, I'll take Philbin and Sherman unencumbered with the distraction and stress of moving to a new city over the hypothetical better coaches out there.
The fact that there are only 32 GM jobs out there means there'll always be someone willing to take the job.
What about signing Devon Wylie from the Steelers practice squad? Giving credit where credit is due, I never even heard of this guy from Fresno St. until CK mentioned him before the draft last year. I watched and what I watched I liked- he's a little dude like Welker, quick and much faster. Put him in the slot and Matthew can play both slot and out wide. Wylie can return kicks as well and he is significantly faster than Davone Bess- I've had enough of the Slowskys in the slot. I'm not sure why KC released him, but the Steelers are no fools and they picked him up. Bottom line- we have a need a slot receiver now and Wylie would be a good match, even though he's smaller than what the coaches want- who cares, the kid can play.
Thank you, no. Sometimes a change is necessary for the sake of change, for a new mindset to be able to emerge from the rubble, also for a change of course/change in ideology. I say that more objectively than subjectively- look at football, baseball, basketball, hockey- it happens all the time. As to the quality of coaches and GMs available- Ross can find a new GM, if not an established name GM then he can always poach and up and comer from a successful FO staff. The coaches- I have a hard time believing that there isn't a better one out there than Philbin- I don;t particularly dislike him, but there's no charisma to him no dynamic aspect to his personality- it boils down to whether or not he's a leader of men and he can inspire a team. He just doesn't have it imo- a colder and even more boring and passive version of Cam Cameron. I look at Philbin and I see an Offensive Coordinator, not a head coach. My guess, based upon my own observations of him in the news down here and on Hard Knocks, is that his cold fish personality isn;t exactly winning over the players- do you see them reaching new heights to fight for him, are they inspired by him? We can find a better coach and a better GM. As to the coach, Jon Gruden is a dilemma for me- good coach, won a Super Bowl, more "cult of personality" to him, but I don;t love him as a coach for some reason. I'd have to think about that one. But there are coaches out there, and in hindsite Jim Harbaugh would have been a nice fit. Screw Sparano's feelings, we should have gone all out for him.
With Gibson down I think more is/should be asked of the RBs in the receiving game. Their presence has been almost non-existent. We need to get them involved in check-downs and screens more to help Tanny with blitz recognition/reaction as he seems to struggle with it overall. And Wallace is due, waaaay overdue, to win us a game. Let's hope he gives us some quick-strike scores against Cincy as I really think a big game from him is our only shot at beating them. That said, we really missed Gibson yesterday when the going got tough. He's just been so good for us in key moments, very hard to replace his consistency and tough mentality. Such a shame for him.
Mike Wallace was terrible yesterday. There were multiple plays where he didn't come back to the ball or fight for the ball. On the interception he never came back to it. Just kept running as if there weren't defenders who might jump the pass. And the drops are killing me. PS. He only has 41 more receiving yards than Ted Ginn and one fewer touchdown. How sad is that?
Well, we should have done that last year with Reggie Bush. As to Wallace, I could live with a break-in period as per getting on the same page with Tannehill, what I can't live with is him playing like a passive, extremely well paid weenie. Speed is a great thing to have, but Ireland traded a physical presence and production machine in Brandon Marshall and got Wallace for megabucks- not looking so hot so far. Playing devil's advocate, with the OL sucking wind there's less time available for Tannehill and Wallace to get the longer routes working efficiently. That certainly would help, but nonetheless I'm tired of seeing Wallace getting pushed around on the field.
He was pretty covered. If they're going to take Wallace away, where the heck was Hartline? What type of coverage did they have on Hartline? Does NE have the secondary talent to double Wallace and play man on Hartline? Hartline and Tannehill were not on the same page yesterday.
Looks like there was a reason that Wallace was used on such a limited route tree in Pittsburgh. Despite all our hopes in preseason when he was looking more well-rounded, my guess is that Pittsburgh saw what we've been seeing: Wallace doesn't fight for the ball. You look at the types of WRs in Green Bay, that's what we need. bigger WRs that help their QB out of tough situations. having said that, it doesn't mean we can't use Wallace effectively. but as long as our Oline fails to protect against any form of blitzing, Wallace will continue to see coverage w/safety help over the top, pretty much neutralizing him.
And they were without Aquib Talib. Wilfork goes down, Vollmer goes down, Talib goes down, Mayo goes down- that's a starting OT and a lynchpin NT on a 3-4 defense plus their shutdown corner and their All-Pro MLB- they just keep trucking along. Acquiring quality players on the cheap like Rob Ninkovich certainly helps them stay competetive...
Mike Wallace is always blanketed. The guy can't separate worth a damn even with his speed. And he never comes back for the ball or fight for it, he always does some sort of fadeaway.
At this point Wallace looks better suited for flag football than NFL football, where he could actually get a quick release and not get outmuscled and outhustled for the football. I wasn;t expecting great things from Wallace in this regard, but I wasn't expecting him to be this lousy at separating and fighting for the football, either. At least we have a physical and talented Rishard Matthews to replace Gibson- I like Matthews, but the downside is that at this point he's no Gibson, he has a ways to go yet.
Thats not his game though, thats Brandon Marshall's game. Wallace runs, he got paid 60 million because he can catch and run a 4.5, problem is our QB is innaccurate as **** with the deepball. Is he overpaid, sure he is, I wouldnt pay a guy top dollar because he can run fast but it is what it is, put wallace on the Packers and Rodgers has a field day with him so would Manning Cutler or Luck. These guys all have a sweet deepball and can catch Wallace in stride, Tannehill launches ducks and wallace has to come back and fight for the ball which is not what he does, its not his game.
well then you must be set for making more excusses . nobody wants to chance coaches but my gosh man how many more excuses are we going to make. Mike Sherman must go he flat out sucks . we seem to be witnessing our players that move on get better while players that come to Miami seem to get worse. that isn't our fault that is on coaching and the gm. there is no law that says we have to have the right coach after having to replace a coach . sometimes a team has to move on if things don't work out and to accept the fact that we have been through 5 or 6 coaches doesn't mean we have to keep a coach who just isn't getting it done.
Sometimes I wonder if some even watch the game, because this continued criticism of Tannehill's ability to throw the deep ball as an attempt to absolve Mike Wallace's limited impact on this team makes me think that some do not watch the games. Fact is, Ryan went into this game with the 8th or 9th highest accuracy rate on passes thrown farther than 20 yards.....but he's inaccurate on the deep ball. Yeah.
Yeah, he led Clay perfectly on a deep pass, and the announcer even commented that if Clay had kept his arms in and run up under the ball it would have been a TD.
Ok i know i saw that one and it was nice, now flip the coin and look at the INT where Mike Wallace had the CB beat and the Safety was coming in at a bad angle, Tannehill lands that and its a TD. Tannehill under throws and wallace has to slow down but its too late, one Patriot tips it for the other CB to intercept it. in case you dont rememebr the play: http://www.nfl.com/videos/new-england-patriots/0ap2000000271202/Patriots-defense-INT
We ran a wide open screen to Miller yesterday and he runs out of bounds. Hit it inside and use the speed. I don't think he is smart enough to do that.
I won't take Sherman if he continues to ignore the running game. I watched the 1st half....yes we are running the ball. Great, Sherman is obviously learning. Guess what...running game disappeared 2nd half..AGAIN! Sherman is beginning to p**s me off
I was at the game. That direction was with the wind, although the wind came and went yesterday and was swirling often.
Maybe it can be found here by someone who's joined PFF: https://www.profootballfocus.com/about/pff-signature-stats/#DeepPassing
And we didn't challenge. Another indictment against this coaching staff. CBS only having one angle was a bit suspicious but, it is CBS, the WORST network at covering football.

I was under the impression that foot did not touch the ground, and was merely over it as it swung out of bounds.
That wasn't on the coaches. There is a guy in the booth who is responsible for watching the replays from several angles and notifying Philbin. That dude blew it... But yes, CBS was too busy switching to commercial every few minutes. Was annoying as Hell. And they rarely showed complete replays.
I was as well. Had a buddy email me this a few mins ago. This was the first time I have seen a screen shot of the play as CBS sucked at replaying it and it happened so fast.
CBS just sucks. Injury? Commercial. Replay review? Commercial. My favourite is their World famous, Point after a touchdown, commercial, kick off, commercial series they do after almost every touchdown. Oh, and they have inferior sound and picture. And commentators. When I watch games on FOX I get jealous of fans of NFC teams. I swear, they have 25% less commercials. Someone must have done a statistical analysis of that somewhere.
The Commercials are by contract. The contracts state how many and at what times to run them. Sometimes they go long on a broadcast and they "owe" spots. Then they "pay them off". Our game seemed to be a victim of that. Either that, or you give back money. CBS evidently did not want to return any money. All this shows is that FOX is much better at broadcasting games, and their producers are just better. Also helps if you have a good director.
Wallace is a p ussy plain and simple. He will not fight for balls or go all out to make a play. He sees a pass isnt right where he wants it and gives up. I think his effort is terrible and I can see exactly why Pittsburgh never even considered giving him big money. He will be off of this team in 2 years and laughing all the way to the bank. The sad reality is the exact player Tannehill needs right now is Marshall.....ironic.
but Pittsburgh saw enough in Wallace to reportedly offer him $50 million for 5 years, which Wallace rejected. He has some shortcomings but Sherman still has to do a better job of getting his ability involved. Yesterday's screen was what, his second of the year, each one going for 20+ yards? He's gotten just 2 handoffs, one for 8 yards and the other for 12. So why aren't we peppering these in a little more considering their effectiveness? How many times have we rolled Tannehill out to buy extra time and unload a bomb to Wallace? How many shallow crossing routes or drags across the field are we running with Wallace [like we saw yesterday with Hartline] to let him use his speed to separate from defenders and leave him with plenty of grass to work with rather than all these out routes and hitches/comebacks that spare little room for YAC? Seriously, we'll design it up for Hartline but not Wallace? That's unacceptable. Reminds me of the sh** we saw with Henning where he repeatedly outthought himself by calling all the fades to Hartline instead of Brandon Marshall.
It doesn't differentiate between 20 and 30. For the record, RTH is 15th in the NFL at passing beyond 20 yards. I don't know if it factors in passes were the WR is wide open but the ball is under thrown and still complete. The ball is still complete which is great but a well thrown ball may result in a TD.
