He asked him the standard questions, you know: "Was your mom a hooker? No? Good, we're drafting you."

This is what happens when the coaches do stuff that pisses off players and then don't win.

    It's call Schianoing....

They seem to go out of their way to make it hard for the media to do their jobs.

So when things go badly they have not earned any good will benefit of the doubt.

no. Philbin set rules and the local media doesn't like them. the local media believes they should have all access at any time and that Philbin should clue them in on every nit picky little thing. you can see these clowns constantly pushing in the PC's. Philbin will only talk about football related items and then only things that need to be expressed to the general public. **** the local media in So FLA, they have been as much a part of the problems since Saban was here.

oh, I don't know. seems to me this has been an issue SINCE Saban was here. Wanny ran such a loose ship and then Saban clamped it down. somehow the media seems to think it is privileged in some way.

I don't remember a Dolphins coach getting ripped as much as Philbin has the last two weeks, I can't even remember Cam Cameron getting piled on this badly. Only thing I can think of is that maybe Philbin is a jerkoff behind the scenes.

Not based on what I've read from people he used to work with him. The coaches and players from Green Bay spoke very highly of him.

I think we need to move forward like Martin isn't here. If he turns the corner, great, if not we have a starter in front of him.

I hope everyone who scoffs at the idea that media can add to a franchises instability reads this post. And actually remembers it.

And by the way, the media are merely feeding the public what it laps up. The fans are implicit in this if they are eager customers for such media agendas.

That was actually not Perkins. Perkins was the guy hammering Philbin over and over again on Pouncey, but after the final time Philbin gave his I'm not going to talk about it answer, someone else in the room kind of snapped in defense of Perkins. Not sure who.

Here's my one issue with the whole rush to sympathy with Martin, people acting all shocked and affronted when others crack a joke about the situation or criticize the Dolphins because of it, etc.

If some living-wage normal dude does this, he's feeling pressure in his life and with his job and it leads to his "freaking out" at work, he gets fired. And at that point he's a lazy guy who "can't keep a job" and god help him if he ends up filing for some kind of government benefit, then he's a lazy guy who can't keep a job and just wants to live off government benefits.

But if you're a public figure who made $2.5 million in the last year and a half and this happens, you "check yourself into a facility" and "spend time with your family"...the "mental illness" label gets thrown out there (pretty much based on absolutely no diagnosis) and there's this massive move to sympathy. And anyone who criticizes, at that point they're being insensitive to the issues of mental illness.

That's my one rant...and I'll not say anymore on the subject. I hope Jonathan Martin works out whatever issues he's going through. Lucky for him he's got every resource at his disposal to do so.

Are you suggesting Martin should smoke weed as treatment for his disorder? Couldn't hurt, I guess. He couldn't get much more soft and mellow than he is already.

I don't know that he gets fired but it certainly is not a "healthy" response from a mental standpoint.

Of course any judgments rendered are without all the information.

On the one hand, such a prank - silly as it may be - should be something any healthy person can laugh at. In fact, had he just sat there and laughed, it would have endeared him to his teammates. When someone is able to laugh at themselves (even their own flaws) people appreciate that.

On the other hand, much of it may depend on his relationship to his other teammates. Was it already strained? Was he an outsider? Were they already talking behind his back about him and he felt that? Then that's more on them. It would be immature. It doesn't excuse such a reaction however.

Clearly he has problems and has had problems. It's unfortunate that the Dolphins did pick up on this earlier before they drafted him. Of course, there were other things they might have picked upon.

I am praying that he will find peace and get his life turned around, ultimately. Mental illness (if this is what it is) is very difficult to deal with (I've worked with many who have them) and it would be especially taxing in a job such as his.

I think you actually hit on one reason the Dolphins have failed in drafting linemen. They look at the "tools" and "upside" of players who have not yet developed. I think they did the same thing with Dallas Thomas. Where is this guy? He was a tweener project. There were plenty of more well-established players.

Ireland keeps trying to find "gems" like he's some sort of draft guru and those fail too often. Esp. on the OL. Get players at a single position that you can work right in (be it OG or OT) and get them in their fast. There have been plenty of good O-linemen in the last two drafts who are playing well already. It's a total fail as far as OL drafting.

Whether it's regarding a celebrity or someone that you know personally, if you take pleasure in their misfortune you're pretty much acting like a douche bag. If the person going through the hard time is someone that you have a strong dislike for it's still a lousy thing to do, but at least it makes a bit more sense. But say, for example, a co-worker that you really don't know, a neighbor that you're not really familiar with, a local athlete like Jonathan Martin? What's the point? To point at him and say "Hah Hah! like Nelson on the Simpsons? That's called being a dick. Or that tool at work who snickers at something bad that happened, in the background, but visible in a passive aggressive way- why be that guy?

As to the laziness component- that seems like quite a reach. I doubt that Martin had an episode to get out of practice or any rationale equally as inane.

I think it's clear that Martin was indeed feeling pressure in his life, and that pressure got to him this time. He'll have to take a hard look at himself- maybe if a person's initial reaction is to laugh at him at his moment of weakness it's time to take a hard look at themselves as well. In some ways that reaction is a glimpse into what kind of a person they really are, and I wouldn't be particularly proud of what was revealed.

I don't think what you're saying is wrong, but I'll just add my own two cents. I could write quite a bit on this topic, but I'll try to keep it short.

I do think there is an overabundance of pearl clutching that goes on when something like this happens. Joking about these things is a healthy response to any situation, you have to be able to laugh at yourself and bad situations to make them better. With that said, I'm glad that there are a group of people able to sympathize with the potential that Martin may be dealing with some inherent problems.

As you laid out, there's a certain stigma when it happens to the average joe. Maybe people call him lazy, maybe people think panic attacks are only for the weird dude without friends, maybe he's "pathetic" (as one poster so eloquently put it). Short of experiencing it themselves or with someone close to them, most people will only see these issues through the lens of an athlete or someone in the spot light. In those cases, the best way to break down that stigma is to educate people, promote acceptance, and be relatively sensitive about it (there's a difference between cruel and funny jokes, some in this thread toe the line).

It's rather comforting to me to see so many people defend him. It makes me hope that down the line people, including myself, won't have to hide their struggles with these issues. In the interim all we can do is hope Martin gets better and try not to throw too many lunch trays in frustration when the Dolphins play.

Everything about this season is ?-marks. Just bizzaro world from all angles I can't explain it. More often I walk away on Sunday's just confused....

Now this? Funny thing is when they were getting on him in Hard Knocks about Big Weirdo I was saying to myself "he doesnt like that" you can tell it was irking him. NOT THAT was the reason he snapped obviously but it was telling about the overall make-up of him....it definitely bothered him...

Yeah, I wrote in two of the recent threads I started that I thought the franchise was moving toward a boiling point. Then the Jeff Darlington report happened. Then the news about Jonathan Martin came out. I'd say it took two pretty big steps in that direction. I mean I would honestly find the Dolphins winning tonight to be more bizarre than them getting thumped, just based the way this season has been going.

It's a little weird as well that after the Bengals game their next opponent is Tampa Bay. I don't think any team has had as weird a season as them. Schiano leaking stories about Josh Freeman, rumors of them sabotaging team captain votes, dissension in the locker room, MRSA, etc.

I don't know if employment rules are completely different in the US, but over here if someone did what Martin supposedly did in the cafeteria they would be highly unlikely to be fired. Most employers would offer them help/counselling. People snap in work life every day, and unless there's violence involved, they'd be offered support and not unemployment.

I know someone who "freaked out" in a remarkably similar way to Martin last year in my work, they were signed off work sick for a few weeks and then came back when ready. They were asked if they wanted a move to a different department/job (the reason for the breakdown was his personal life, but the stressful job had contributed) and accepted.

Even though there were a few jokes about it between people talking (who doesn't, it's often a way of dealing with even the worst things that happen in life), the vast majority of people had sympathy. Most people nowadays realise that anyone is susceptible to mental health issues, and it could be just around the corner for any of us.

That's got nothing to do with sycophancy for the rich and famous and everything to do with people having dumb opinions and about mental health issues and a bad support system for it in this country. It's bizarre and baffling you would conflate the two.

When someone has mental or emotional issues that adversely affect their employment, it's a pretty big ****ing deal regardless if they're a football player or a 7-11 cashier.

Over here, almost any employer of any size has Employee Assistance Programs for just this type of thing. I have worked at everything from 'small' (as in under $1MM gross revenue) business in the 1970's to a large international church now - and the EAPs have been around for a long time for just this type of thing. Now, if someone blows up, starts a physical fight or screams and hollers at the supervisory staff and/or threatens bodily harm.. that usually will lead to an immediate (sometimes constabulary escorted) invitation to leave the premises on a permanent basis. I have seen enough of both. So, even non-athletes at more 'average' salary/wage levels have, in many cases, resources for what this incident would appear to be.

Just off the top of my my head, this young man could be dealing with the fear of failure to perform up to expectations for what could be the first time in his life - and at the highest level he could wish to attain. That kind of internal pressure can either make, or break, an individual - and in most of the cases of a similar (in style, not substance) nature with which I have dealt (admittedly a small sample, now!) the individual weathers the incident acceptably. In this case, the level of performance required for success (both internally in his thought process and externally as far as achievement) is so high that it may be beyond his capacity. In 28 years of lay and ordained ministry, I have dealt extensively with young (13-25 year old) young people. Fear of failure (in my opinion only, due to over-thinking the situation) is one of the great maladies of the day among this age group (particularly if expectations are heaped upon them) and can freeze someone right in their tracks, so to speak. On a football field, this is obviously disastrous.

But, this is nowhere near as disastrous as those little non-thinking, asinine cretins who bully classmates into such despair as to cause suicide.

These hacks are circling like vultures trying to take a dump on this regime. Somebody pissed in their cheerios, and they have made their mind up.

Now..does this come from players talking to media..or is the media pushing an independent agenda?

I am getting fed stories left and right, and I am not sure any of them are true.

So am I crazy for thinking all of this **** is just the media trying to get revenge for Philbin not giving them answers? I feel all of this locker room stuff is pure BS.

  39. PhinsRock

to me this is is one more step in confirming my suspicions Philbin, Coyle and Sherman have lost the locker room. When a defensive player flips the coaches the bird in a game after getting a sack, and Philbin just seems oblivious to four losses, claps after the worst play of the game, and now this. I believe Philbin has lost control of this team.

If this season continues to go the way it has the last 4 games, we see a complete housecleaning, Ireland, Philbin and staff all gone IMVHO. And frankly as it should be.

Yeah, how dare Philbin try to encourage his team by clapping them on. Not like every other coach in sports history does that.
