Mike Mayock, who works Dolphins-Bengals on NFL Network, made some interesting comments in a chat with WQAM’s Joe Rose Wednesday: “The Dolphins’ passing game inside is efficient. Their pass game outside is inefficient. Teams are doing a good job with [Mike Wallace] at the line of scrimmage, jamming him. The Brandon Gibson loss is a huge loss.” He said Ryan Tannehill’s numbers are “eerily” similar to last season, including his 6.8 average yards per attempt, and “you would like to see those numbers improve in year 2.” He suggests pass protection is impeding Tannehill’s growth because “if you get hit enough, your eyes start to come down and you’re not as good as you should be.” Mayock questioned the Dolphins’ play selection in the second half of the New England game. “Up 14-3, 17-3, you’ve got to keep running the ball,” Mayock said. “You made it too easy for them.” Read more here: http://miamiherald.typepad.com/sports-buzz/#storylink=cpy
I think in some ways the fact that his numbers haven't gotten worse due to the protection, is evidence that he has improved at least a little bit. Rookie Tannehill behind this line would be much worse.
I agree. I've been very hesitant to come to the conclusion that Tannehill has become "the guy" at QB, but between that OL and Wallace playing so poorly, he deserves some consideration as to those factors. Now Martin is gone and Gibson is done for the year- yikes.
Add the Keller loss to that as well. I think that was a big hit even before regular season kicked off.
if we had any half-decent offensive coordinator, he would find a way to utilize Wallace at wideout and slot. when you have a stud wideout, you move him around and find mismatches. heck, i've seen andre johnson, megatron, jordy nelson, and dez bryant lineup inside from time to time. sherman has been beyond terrible in his adjustments.
It's funny, because Philbin is big on having WRs who can play all three positions, and endorsed the Wallace acquisition, yet they don't move Wallace around.
Perhaps you haven't noticed the number of interceptions he has thrown and the number of times he has fumbled this season. I really don't know how things could be much worse. While the OL has been terrible, Tannehill has contributed to some of the sacks because he just has zero pocket awareness. His ability or should I say, inability to connect on deep passes also continues to be a major concern going forward. I haven't given up on him, but he needs to show a lot more over the remainder of the season then he has so far this season. He seemed to have hit a plateau in the last four games and the improvement we saw earlier in the season just hasn't been evident in recent weeks. He needs to be consistent throughout the entire game and not fall apart in the second half as he has done recently.
I want to agree with this, but he's also had much better receiving options. I know that Wallace hasn't lived up to expectations, but he and Gibson were huge upgrades over Bess/Moore/Whoever. Charles Clay has also improved. Sent from my SPH-L720 using Tapatalk
Still so many questions and too few answers , how many years does it take before this has changed or there is a change where it matters?
I think Mayock was being kind to Mike Wallace when he said the Dolphins are inefficient on the outside. If you include both sides, the Dolphins are 79 of 133 for 889 yards with 8 touchdowns and 3 interceptions on the perimeter. They're 76 of 112 for 880 yards with 3 touchdowns and 6 interceptions over the middle. However, specifically with Mike Wallace the Dolphins are 30 of 63 for 398 yards with 1 touchdown and 4 interceptions. The problem isn't inside-vs-outside. It's Wallace-vs-everyone else.
That would be a positive if that either results in a win and more wins than losses going forward or the appropriate response to being 3 - 5 at the halfway point of yet another non playoff/losing season imo.
This makes me think you just don't know qb position very well. not saying I am an expert I am not, but while he has to hold the ball better many of the fumbled have been blindside hits within 3 seconds of the snap. How many ings are later in game when behind? RT definitely has improved but is not a finished product. The finished product will be determined by how he is protected and supported and coached.
But Wallace hasn't been an upgrade. I guess you can make the argument that he has helped stretch the field for Miami but when the ball has been thrown to him, he has been bad. A catch rate under 50% is terrible. He may be more talented but he has not been more productive. He has been a bad wide receiver for Miami so far.
