Because you can't just "leave" the military. Ergo the military must do everything it can to stop people from wanting to.

Exactly, in the military when the horn sounds, you charge up the hill (so to speak), there is no alternative, and the months or yrs away from home and family etc.

Have to mentally tough to volunteer to do it

Football on the other hand, is a sport, no one dies, you can walk away at any time.

I absolutely do not put them on pedestals, not at all, I do appreciate the ones who just bust their *** daily to just make it into the league, these are not the #1 pick guys, they are Joe Schmoe from Podunk U who no one knows who they are at all

A job is a job is a job. A workplace is a workplace. They all look different but you can't have a standard for 99.9% of workplaces and then have a completely different standard for one. It's not even logical. This is easy to see but nobody wants to apparently.

I'm sure coach Shula was all in favor of his players' macho posturing getting in the way of team unity. Funny how there are potentially as many coach Shulas as there are fans.

If the facts come out and Martin was constantly harassed, changes must be made. If these guys want to act like high school football players, they don't belong on a professional football team. A little hazing is one thing (if it serves to bring the rookies together), but players need to be professionals. Maybe this team never gets better because the players think they get paid to play rather than work.

While I'd actually be surprised if it's not worse than what has been rumored, I will wait for the facts to come out.

Miami is going to do all the right things now, and say all the right things in public, but reality - ball busting happens on every team, and this guy is just soft. We need two new tackles next year, this guy is done in Miami. Won't take another snap...

I'm arguing a viewpoint. I have no idea what led you to "making a big deal" out of anything. I don't think NFL vets should be allowed to make rookies buy them crap and this is why. If you want to argue to the contrary jump right in.

For all the talk about him, it should be pointed out that Shula didn't allow water breaks at practice because you were soft to need water.

Times changed and so did he. He was not an idiot or a monster. All Philbin had to do was tell the guys to knock off Martin after it was brought to his attention. Either he did nothing or he said something but was completely ignored by his team. Either way, not good

There is most definitely a failure to lead aspect to all this. Yes it's damning of Philbin. But it's also damning of the players themselves. Veterans are supposed to handle their own to some extent when it comes to issues like this. What Beasley has been reporting on with various players grousing about making the rookies pay for everything, that's a failure to lead. It's the leaders on the team that are supposed to make sure either that the rookies understand why they're being asked to do this, or to offer them some relief if the veterans are taking it too far.

Martin is done in Miami agreed. Besides him being too soft/ sensitive, what else is going on that will be leaking soon? Once again forever building an O-line and a team with the proper coaching.

This team is a ****ing mess

  21. So you have never went out after work as a group and told the new guy that first round was on him? Same difference from what I have heard so far and its really not that big of a deal. You are making it sound like its an act against humanity.

Its about the new guys who are the ones needing the vets help to assimilate into the NFL being tested by the Vets. Rookies need veteran help and the vets take payment for that help and the vets want to know that they are not wasting their time and energy on some rookie who is not going to make it. It is much more complicated than how you are framing this.

You'll be waiting a while. I have come to your side: this team is humming right along, getting better every week, getting better every year. They know exactly what they're doing, organization-wise. No need to change a thing.

P.S. A close friend of my family is currently an NFL DC. I'll have to call him out for b.s.-ing me about the way things work. They are just paid to goof off, after all.

Does the first round cost thousands of dollars? No I have never made a person think they have to buy me things to get my help at work or show they're serious. The vets are paid by the Miami Dolphins to help rookies, whether they end up making the team or not. If we were talking about dollar amounts in the hundreds this probably wouldn't even come up. The numbers being thrown out are significant.

  27. If this is a case of veteran misconduct I tend to agree that this is a pretty big failure on the part of the leadership council for not intervening and on Philbin and his staff.

(Sep. 7) RT @J_Martin71 I'm done playing credit card roulette SMDH

    Credit card roulette is:

A game of chance to decide which person pays for a restaurant meal. Every party contributes a credit/debit card into a hat and the waiter/waitress removes one card at time. The last card removed pays the entire bill.

  31. 7 or more rookies splitting a 30k tab is less than 5k each and that's chump change for those guys even at the minimum salary. Its not a lot of money to them. Secondly you are confusing the coaches responsibilities with the players. Vets are not paid to help rookies get better and possibly take their jobs away from them. Vets are paid to play their position the best they can. Its the coaches job to turn rookies into pro caliber players.

There were rumors of similar conduct back in Shula's heyday too. Supposedly Csonka, on his 2nd stint with the team, used to tease Delvin Williams regularly about his being gay. Teasing/joking/bullying/harassment...it is all the same depending on the perception of the recipient.

IMO, rookie hazing is one of the stupidest customs allowed by some NFL teams. I've read that not all head coaches tolerate it. Kudos to the ones who don't. If I were a head coach, that would be one law I'd lay down from the get go. No rookie hazing. No stupid haircuts. No tying them to goalposts. No forced dunks into an ice bath, carrying pads, or whatever. Does it foster team chemistry or team unity? I think not.

  38. IMO it can be healthy if done correctly. It can serve as a stress test for new players to see if they crack under the pressure. Sort of like what the military does to new recruits during basic training.

That is your opinion. Your assessment is "the guy is just soft" . You know this based on what? Your opinion. And because he is "soft" that completely justifies all this. But of course we don't know what "all this" is. I bought in to everything you said until you got to the part "this guy is just soft". A guy that has played football up to this level is just soft? you lost me there.
