Context is everything. If that message was sent from an abusive husband to his estranged wife, she could be mortified.

In this case, it appears these two had an over-the-top way if communicating with each other. I don't think it's a coincidence that this all came out on the heels of a four game losing streak, a trade for a veteran LT and Martin's general poor performance.

As for the member who stated that Ireland should have been on top of this...maybe BB should have been on top of the Hernandez situation because there was no shortage of warning signs.

Don't let your Ireland hatred cloud your judgment.

I have have a hard time respecting Martin as a man when his Mom is in charge.

Two laywers... you think he grew up learning to talk back and get into a long, losing argument or to not even bother speaking up?

I'll bet it was easier just to agree and go along with them.

    Still is, apparently.

hmm I think both these guys are scum but I would like to know if cogs has more than just this text from a week ago. If he has plenty that date far back i would most likely side with both these guys just being clowns. If not and its just this 1 text a week ago it could be martin ment this and it was the point he started to snap.

The problem is a lot of this was going on between two teammates and at the Dolphins facility. Hernandez was gang banging in the offseason and outside of their facility, without any Patriots teammates involved. He didn't murder anyone on the practice field with the Patriots brass watching. (Incognito also got wasted and harassed a woman at a team charity golf event...) And the Patriots have a winning franchise... If they take a chance on a high risk guy it doesn't effect them as much if he goes off the rails and they cut him loose. If the Dolphins, who can't seem to buy a winning season, take a risk on problem players then Ireland is putting a lot more on the line. In the midst of the worst losing streak (of 4 straight years) in the franchise's history, you also have players you can't control? What would be left to defend him...He doesn't have a steller draft either to defend him with.

I love how Incognito. Are it sound like Martin physically texted that to him as opposed to sending an internet memed picture. This is our left guard? He had to have known that this would have been easily explained by Martin's lawyer, right?

And yes, context does matter in both cases. The main difference being that Martin shared a picture where the joke is clearly that the dog has a psychotic look on his face, and Rochie called his "brother," a ni**er. The two aren't even remotely close.

I guess I now know why this interview was heavily edited on FOX this morning. At least Glazer admitted ahead of time that he and Richie were friends so we knew it would be spun in Richie's light. But wow, Jay Glazer should be embarrassed for allowing this to be the big tease when he HAD the text messages in hand and could have easily snipped this part out in order to make Incognito look better. Poor planning all the way around.

At this point, I think it is safe to say that we, as a fan base are overly saturated with this story, right? I went from feeling one way, to feeling the other and am now resigned to the fact that we are a joke of a franchise, and most likely re-building again.

    Yay?

There were plenty of warning flags as it pertained to Hernandez. It was well documented that BB was aware of the types that Hernandez was running with.

If I catch the nuance of what you are saying, it's that winning covers for a lot of ills. And maybe that is what this comes down to.

I am certain that the national narrative would be different if this was a team with sustained excellence.

Yea I agree! Had incognito had a picture behind his words, it really would of made all the difference.

Get this racist off this team! He should have both his hands chopped off in public for typing such a message with no picture behind it! We have to make a statement as a society!!!

Yeah, the Patriots staff has leeway. There would be a national uproar regardless of wins/losses, I mean it was pretty hard on New England this summer. But it faded as the Patriots cooperated and then the season began and now they're 7-2 and Hernandez only briefly gets mentioned.

I just mean that nobody is on the hot seat for drafting Hernandez because the rest of the team is doing fine without him. You can't entirely fault Ireland even though they knew both had issues, because he can't monitor every little thing, but he was on the hot seat going into this season as the Dolphins are trying not to have a 5th losing season. When you add this on top of it all, I'm not sure a 9-7 (or 10-6) wild card finish would even be enough to save him.

Or from a purely football perspective, the Giants have 2 Super Bowls in 6 years. They're having an awful season (and missed the playoffs last year too), but they have some time and patience in their favor. Though next year they'll need to show improvement or some of their staff will be on the hot seat.

Well for one, it was a voicemail.

Secondarily, I'm not on either side, at this point. As stated earlier in this thread, I thought Richie did a good job of looking contrite and somewhat convincing to the public during his interview.

Granted it was heavily edited, but it did the job, in my opinion. But as this thing drags on and Martin starts to push back, I think we are going to hear more things from both sides that will be debated and ultimately debunked/confirmed and blah, blah, blah.

And at some point we will realize that we are spending this time on two guys who weren't very good at their job and had a pretty good shot of being off the team after this season, to begin with.

I think you're right in the sense that this is going to dissolve into, "Oh, well look what Martin texted me a bunch of days ago," vs. "Oh, look what Richie texted me a bunch of days ago."

The difference is, Richie is defending himself, Martin is the one that really let this whole thing unravel in front of the public.

Yes what've been overly saturated with this story. But what the hell are you talking about? This doesn't make us a joke of a franchise. I think you are ignoring the facts presented so far for a reason that I'm not sure about. Your point about the meme is way off. And please stop making it sound as if Incognito flat out called Martin the N word with cruel intent.

Was about to post something similar. Richie wasn't trying to absolve himself of all wrong doing in this interview. He was trying to describe the nature of their relationship as he, and others, understood it. He specifically mentioned that text with the meme in direct response to Glazer asking about the message where Cogs said "I'll kill you" while laughing. Cogs was using this as but one example of the what was exchanged in various forms between them. They have over 1100 messages reportedly.

The entire interview was only to try and get people to realize that their are two sides to the story and that Cogs isn't the racist bully he has been portrayed as by ESPN. As for the whole "N" word. It has been reported that Martin used it in response to others as well. It's disingenuous to use it in front of team mates, then crucify another teammate for using the same word.

I also found it interesting and odd that Cogs said that Martin texted him days ago that most of what is being reported is not coming from him (Martin).

Actually better that it was a voicemail - if for no other reason than you could hear Cogs laughing in it...

Agree on dumping them both. Martin wasn't progressing and Richie is on the downside of his career and there is yearly drama with him in some form or another every season.

Seems to me that Incognito overstepped his boundries without knowing. From the interview he gave a simple "knock it off" would've sufficed.

I'm still pissed that it got to this point. Hopefully, the Dolphins take this negative energy to beat the piss out of Tampa. A loss would just give the media more fire

Incognito and the sexual assault are what should keep him out of the NFL forever. But everyone seems to want to focus on the Martin part of the story.

Both of these dudes need to go...how were they showing on PFF before all this?

I think it's completely possible that Cogs will land on another team, but I can't help but think Martin's through (even if he wanted to keep playing, which I doubt).

We really need to figure out how to obtain quality OL talent...

And be mindful that the police report likely only consisted of the lady's account. If this was the case, the report would be tantamount to her just telling her story. One would tend to think that if this occurred at such an event that there would have been witnesses.

that's not exactly what was said. Martin and Incognito exchanged texts on the day after the Bengals game. likely the last time they "talked."

This is what Martin texted him:

This is before Martin's camp released the infamous voicemail thru ESPN with the N word. It's very clear to me that the previous day (Saturday) the plan was concocted by Martin's camp (parents/agent). Martin has $ to lose (his contract plus future career earnings playing football), his attorney parents and agent are going to make sure that doesn't happen. How much Martin actually was involved in that really doesn't matter anymore.

The bigger problem here, as Incognito is deflecting blame, is that someone or something has to go down for this. It's likely going to be the Dolphins' organization. It sure as hell isn't going to be Martin. The culture is apparently to blame and the NFL is going to do everything in their power to clean it up in one fell swoop. The locker room was left unmonitored and one of the leadership council is at the head of the problem. The Dolphins will be made example of. The worst is yet to come.

What I don't get about all of this, considering it's damaging to the entire league, is why ESPN is so hell-bent on pushing and magnifying the issue to all end when the NFL is one of its bell cows.

Still think a lot of it has to do with Cogs calling them out and twittering Shefter to "#Bringit"...

ESPN's "informers", like Schefter, have evolved into Ambulance chasers. It's not about reporting, and certainly not about responsible reporting. It's about ratings and directing the narrative to draw more ratings. They could care less about Incognito or Martin or what the truth is. They only want ratings and racism, sex, or Tim Tebow drives that. There was an article at one time where they discussed how they were directed to report on Tim Tebow simply for the ratings.

And the bias is nothing new... they swept the Rothliesburger stuff under the rug and tried to do the same with their employee, Hugh Douglas, and were called out for both. http://nypost.com/2013/08/11/espn-shows-double-standard-in-coverage-of-cooper-douglas-slurs/

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Criticism_of_ESPN#Ben_Roethlisberger_sexual_assault_case

In the meantime, they crucified both Riley and Cogs.

For f**** sake, the NYPost has been more fair that ESPN... http://nypost.com/2013/11/10/richie-incognito-i-use-racist-language-but-im-not-a-bully/

Big dumb dummies. Both of them. And shame on the Dolphins as an organization right now. Ross is a billionaire. He has to have a great team of lawyers. They need to squash Martin and his family quick. And that's not guessing who's right and who's wrong. No way he doesn't have a legal team that could lay the smack down on Martin's parents, lawyers or not.

No way, 1142 texts between the two in a year's time is a clear sign of a bullying relationship. :shifty: I'm chillin' outside of practice, away from the team, where I'm free from harassment and free to do what I want, so I'm gonna text my bully 500+ times. Yeah that doesn't add up.
