I, like many, was very much in favor of selecting Ryan Tannehill with the #8 overall pick in 2011.

This thread is to look back to 2011 and focus on the reason(s) why myself, many others, and most importantly the Miami Dolphins thought the same.

Tannehill had many questions about his pure passing abilites. His accuracy was in question, throwing dropable passes was a knock on him, and being new to the position were knocks. But the positives were apparent. He has a strong arm, he ran a pro style offense pretty well in only a short period of time and most importantly.....HE WAS AN ATHLETE.

If Tannehill was as athletic as say Drew Bledsoe or even Tom Brady, would he even be selected in the first 3 rounds? I'd say the answer to that is an easy no.

Point being, why is he being coached to basically drop back in the pocket and be Drew Bledsoe? If he's never going to maneuver in the pocket and/or tuck the ball and run, then what was the point? Why did we draft a player and take one of his biggest assets away? I mean honestly, he's got to be amongst the bottom few QBs in rushing yards and/or rush attempts.

I'm completely baffled by this. That 2nd down and goal(after the Jimmy Wilson INT) where he had the whole right side of the field in front of him and didn't run may have cost us 4 points and the game. This is a play he would've run a year ago. So it only leads me to believe he's being coached to do this.

Whether this is Sherman, Zach Taylor, Philbin, or a combination of all 3, which I have every reason to believe it's a combo, there's clearly a failure in player development here. And it's quite scary to be honest and makes me question whether these guys are right for the job.

    EDIT:
To be completely fair to Tannehill and the coaches, his accuracy has developed as has every other part of his passing game. It'd be nice if he could couple that with one of his bigger assets, his athletic ability

he absolutely scores there. I was pissed too. IMO it was the only mistake he made all game.

Tannehill is 100% our guy IMO (not that that matters). I've seen him do everything and more. We'd be nothing without him right now.

I keep on reading the problem with roll outs is that they cut the field in half. However I constantly see roll out plays be successful in the NFL. I am not saying that the Dolphins should run mostly roll outs, however they should run more than 2 or 3 a game.

It all comes back to the offensive line.

I think Tannehill is "the guy" for a decade. We need to surround him with competence.

I certainly did not intend to make this an "anti Tannehill" thread.

More of a, "why the **** is he never running and keeping defenses honest and maneuvering in the pocket" thread. I blame the coaches mostly

Yes, but after a meltdown loss to a horrible team and ten days of media bombardment, the first thing you post afterwards is a thread on Tannehill. Just seems kind of a strange time to bring this up for the 10,000th time when there are obviously much bigger problems.

Im not baffled by it at all. He understands how to make reads and progressions. He ****s up once in a while but imo these are just growing pains. Most QB's have them. The accuracy has been there for the most part.

I dont want my QB running to be honest. It has its moments but if you do it regularly all it does is lead to more injuries (see Vick, RG3 etc). Last year Aaron Rodgers got sacked 1 out of every 11 dropbacks, Tannehill is at 1 of 8 this year. All running the ball means is youre more likely to get hit almost every time. If Tannehill drops back 32x hes getting 4 sacks and numerous other hits. All youre doing is getting your QB more beat up. Gimme a pocket QB all day. QB's should only be running after all other options have been exhausted and the pocket has collapsed. If the pocket is still in tact and its integrity hasnt been compromised, you dont run imo. The ball moves faster when you throw it.

Also, Im not a Mike Sherman fan but the one thing hes done right is this.

Exactly. A mistake that may have cost us 4 precious points.

But the question is WHY???? WHY did he not run in that situation? One of his best attributes is his ability to run and move, and a major reason why he was the #8 overrall pick! Something is keeping him in the pocket moreso this year than last year. And I believe it's being coached into him, which is very very bad

Im sure the coaches tell him to gut it out in the pocket and thats the right move most of the time. Hes got to make a split second decision and take off when he sees a TD though. He has to know when to run and when not to. If he can score, hes got to go for it.

This is all way easier said as a fan seeing the replay tho, I'll admit. it's a split second decision.

I agree. Don't want him running as often as Wilson Kapernick or RGIII. But the only read on that play should've been to tuck the ball and run when he had nothing but green in front of him. It's evident he's running a lot less this year, and it's costing us, IMO.

As I said, his passing is progressing, especially the ball placemen and accuracy. I'm very happy with that for the most part

wasn't clay, it was the wallace deep ball that wallace made ZERO effort to catch in bounds. Wallace did beat revis and the ball was off, but it would not have been impossible for wallace to stay in bounds on that play. But its wallace so he doesn't even try.

    I ****ing hate that man.

I agree with this sentiment. Ryan frankly isn't good enough to just be a pocket passer IMHO. What I mean by that is that for Ryan to really be successful, he needs 4 or 5 runs per game in some manner...either designed or scrambling.

It could be Ryan holding Ryan back for all I know

Ya that was fairly disappointing to see him not tuck and run on that play...disheartening.

I'm fully of the belief the main problem here is Sherman. With the exception of that 2nd TD pass to Matthews, dull, predictable, sometimes senseless play-calls in my opinion.

If the goal for this season was to cement RT in the pocket, they've certainly achieved it. I like his progress to this point and still have trust that he'll be our guy at QB for several years...but I also think the QB coach and OC need to bounce.

Yep. Any further in and Revis has a shot at it, and we all know how good Wallace is at fighting for it.

Also notice how Wallace is also bent on catching that one with his body, even as he goes out of bounds for it.

Eh he could have run on THAT play but the pass he made was on target. The receiver didnt make the play. If the receiver makes the play we arent having the discussion that way either. Overall though its helping us long term in Tannehills development. I want him learning to hold that ball and how to throw under pressure. Eli, Peyton, Kurt Warner, Brees, brady....theyre all great QBs and Im not sure Tannehill will ever meet THOSE lofty standards but one thing he can do is learn to hold the ball like those guys and wait for the play to develop. Those guys take or took hits like crazy all in the name of waiting just a hair longer for the play to develop. On the play in question what Tannehill needed was better pocket awareness to know that once he stepped up the pass rush was 3-5 yards behind him. He could have even waited another second for a guy to appear open.

I agree. But who really is? Tom Brady. Peyton Manning. Drew Brees.

That's about all I can think of. Those are the only 3 guys that can live and survive inside the pocket solely. Maybe even Rogers if he had to.

That's kinda where my point is. I'm going to check on this, but I'm willing to bet a guy like Joe Flacco has more rushes and/or attempts than Tannehill (EDIT. Flacco 13 att. Tannehill 23. I was wrong here)

Ryan is not the issue. I can see how he may have looked like the issue in week 4 but by now...anyone with real knowledge of the game knows he's good, and is being held back by a completely inept O-line and idiotic playcalling.

It's a fair criticism IMO, and while I think the coaches are partly to blame I don't think RT should get a free pass. Ultimately he's the QB, he's not in danger of being benched so he basically can go out there, make plays when the feeling hits him and the coaches couldn't do a damn thing about it. It's like the coaches telling Wake to use more spin moves, if he wants to he will, if not, what are they gonna do, sit him?

My best guess is they want him to focus down field and let the protections take care of themselves, Pouncey does most of the protection calls from what I can tell. As he gets more experience I'm sure they'll begin to put more on his plate.

28 posts in and no one has bashed Tannehill or even blamed him for our teams issues. We're simply having a discussion on his pocket presence, lack of rushing attempts, and whether or not he's being coached to do so and if so, is it detrimental to him and our team.

True, but Tannehill is also the guy with the best chance of improving the team via individual improvement.

Just run/scramble a few times, it doesn't have to highlight reel material, just enough to make the defense take note of it. That would make a big difference IMO.

    This!

Him not running those few times he has a chance in the first 56 minutes of a game, can very much effect the way the opposing defense defends in those last 4 minutes.

Russel Wilson is not the passer Tannehill is, IMO. But he's been much more effective at leading his offense to score points because of how he forces defense to play.

I think those 2-4 tuck and runs or scrambles per game will really help out overall with the offense

I absolutely agree RT needs to err towards caution and pick his spots carefully, but his legs are a major asset and on a night like tonight when we had no running game whatsoever maybe a couple read options should have been called.

Scramble a few times and all of a sudden the pass rushers have to be more disciplined in their rush, the LB's can't drop quite as deep as they may otherwise, coordinators may choose to play more zone or be forced to use a spy when they play man.

I think we're past the point where we can pick and choose which weapons we use and which ammo we leave in the chamber. We need to make use of EVERY advantage we have.

I don't think Tannehill would have scored had he ran that. He would have gotten stopped a couple of yards short of the 1st down marker and had 3rd and two from about the 5 yrd line? Tannehill's accuracy is adequate though inconsistent. There have been many occasions where he had an open field and chose not to take the free yards, rather throw the ball and gotten more yards that way than had he ran. He trusts his arm but he had a drop by Clay followed by a even worse drop by Hartline in the endzone.

3 things really irked me about the coaching tonight

    1. Tannehill's apparently being coached to stand tough in the pocket and do as much as possible to avoid scrambling. (at least that's how I'm interpreting it)
    2. Another long week (12 damn days!!!) and we come out extremely flat as we did with Buffalo after the bye. AND we again look worse conditioned than the opposing team ON A LONG WEEK
    3. Taking Rishard Matthews off the field in lieu of Mike Wallace on 2 WR sets INSIDE THE 30! Can anyone explain this one to me?
