I love Gholston. He is a top 10 pick right now. If he blows up the combine... there is a chance he could move up...

lol totally agree... i was watching a game early in the season and i remember thinking Whoa that DE is flagrantly on roids.... couple months later we're talking about that gholston guy, and what do you know it was the same player haha...

He sure has one heck of a motor, but he also has tons of speed and agilty and will be a beast in the NFL

I think we could trade down 4 or 5 slots and still get Gholston. The first picks are Dorsey, Long, McFadden and maybe even Ryan imo.

I can't see us taking Gholston at 1 so I think the pick will be Long...wish there was a way to get both tho

I think that's due to him playing a lot more DE in OSU's scheme than coming off the edge as a free-lancing OLB type of player. OSU only uses that in 3rd and long situations. They also have a ton of playmakers on defense (Laurinaitis and Marcus Freeman in particular) who get most of the tackles.

Of those 34 tackles, 14.5 were for loss though.

If he runs in the 4.5 range at the combine like he says he can, I think he'll vault up to the top of the draft boards. Very similar situation w/Ronnie Brown in 2005, you only heard mostly about Cadillac Williams up until Ronnie blew everyone away at the combine. He's going to rack up pretty good #'s and with Holliday, Rodrique Wright, Roth and maybe Chase Page, I really don't see a true 3-4 DE as a pressing #1 overall pick type of need. There's no true 3-4 NT available in that slot; I'm not sold on Dorsey's ability to play it coming from an UT spot in a 4-3 defense at LSU.

I think Gholston comes in somewhere betwee DeMarcus Ware and Shawn Merriman and could play either OLB spot in our 3-4, though probably better suited for the strongside as we still have Porter who thrived as the weakside OLB in Pittsburgh, and I wouldn't be surprised to see Quentin Moses get some looks on the weakside as well in due time. A lot of forecasters had projected him as a 3-4 OLB in last year's draft. With Porter/Moses and Gholston I think you see the equivalent pass-rushing ablities of Vrabel and A. Thomas in NE, and Shaun Phillips and Shawn Merriman in SD. That's what I envision at least.

Chris Long just doesn't strike me as the hybrid type that Jason Taylor currently plays for us, nor do I think he'll make that drastic of an impact in the NFL as a pure 3-4 DE. Obviously, as you say, if we could trade down 3-5 spots and still get Gholston, I'm all for that, but I still like Gholston at #1 overall if he really proves his #'s at the combine and pro day workouts.

He reminds me of Julius Peppers, if he played basketball for OSU they would be carbon copies of each other....my pick at #1, or a LT...

I agree with the comparison of Gholston and Merriman and since I was wanting us to take Merriman #2 overall in 2005, I'd be on board with us taking Gholston #1 overall. He is the type of impact player and big playmaker who is worthy of such a high pick. I like Long alot too, but in Parcells' type of 3-4, he'd be a DE and IMO that's not a position that Bill will look to fill with such a high pick.

totally agree with your post, a 3-4 DE is findable in every rounds, but a OLB who can rush as much as he can drop and stuff the run is a lot harder to find in drafts, the best of 'em were drafted very high (merriman, ware, spears, porter, suggs, etc etc) and very few were late round steals

Wow, the hype on this guy has really taken off. Still don't see him as #1 material. Guess we'll see in April.

I don't know how true it is, but I've read that despite Gholson's strength, he's not that good against the run, and that has to be our first priority next year.

Also, the story is that Parcells really wanted Marcus Spears first, not Ware, but he got over ruled, although they ended up with both. I really think he goes first with the best big body...Dorsey.
