It might, but they're not going to try stuff like that when we're 5-5 and in the hunt for the playoffs. The time to try that is pre-season and training camp, and if I recall they did try Pouncey at RG when Jerry was injured, with little success. Yes, he seems well suited to RG, but you don't move one of the best centers in the game to a new position when you have 6 games left and a chance at the playoffs.
If the Dolphins end up moving to a more man-oriented scheme in the future(like with a new coaching staff), I think moving Pouncey to Guard would be a pretty reasonable thing for them to do. He could be the best pulling guard in the league, and I don't think you can really get him involved like that at Center. There are a lot of problems that come with regularly having centers pull like that.
Garner was better at Center than being at Guard, yeah Pouncey is a beast at Center but if Garner can hold his own at Center then lets move our best olineman in a position we need to patch up.
I don't know that Garner is inherently a better Center, but I think it's possible that Pouncey is a really good Guard in another scheme.
Pouncey's shotgun snaps suck too. Garner had a couple bad snaps yesterday, but overall they're much better than Pouncey's. He's had this problem since college and nothings changed. He throws fastballs to Tannehill back there putting unnecessary pressure and focus of receiving a snap rather than reading the field I'd welcome this change
Keep in mind that Philbin/Turner gave Pouncey some time at guard during camp "just in case". I doubt it happens; but it's not completely impossible considering the departure of so many linemen.
So...take one of the best centers in the league and put him at a position he isn't as good at, because another guy plays center than how he plays guard, yet not as good as Pouncey does...? Seems like we would be catering to the wrong guy in this scenario.
What? Mike Pouncey played Guard for the Gators, by the way, Pouncey is good at guard, so there isn't a problem, if it means we can balance out our o line to be better then why not?
Why are we assuming Pouncey isn't as good at Guard? I think it's very much arguable he's a better or more impactful player in another scheme.
I've maintained since we drafted Pouncey that we overpaid for a Center centers are cheap and easily acquired, elite level LG's are far far harder to find
I don't think that's true, I think it depends on the blocking schemes. A center is more valuable in a zone scheme, a pulling guard more valuable in man.
Thing is, I'm not sure Zone works any more, suspect defenses have it figured out. So for me, LG matters more, having an Elite C is great, just think that today LG means more, or T's who can get outside matter more than a C who can
I like the notion actually. If Pouncey is better at guard than he is center and Garner is better at center than he is guard, how can the OL overall not be better? IIRC Pouncey did some work at guard in the preseason/training camp... or maybe that was Samuda... If he didn't, then yeah I don't think you make that move during the season. But next season maybe.
I think people may need to brace for Dallas Thomas at LG. He was pretty adept at short pulls while at UT. If Miami does shift to more of a man blocking scheme, I think that will work in his favor. I know that seems like an absolute long-shot given that Sam Brenner played, but I think that's a likely scenario for 2014.
Eh, I think he can handle it. We also may have to keep in mind there very well could be regime change this offseason, hopefully, like running the 4-3, Coach realizes there are things you would like to do, and then there are things your roster can do
I think its a legit question so...not sure why anyone is being dismissive about it. I know Im not well versed on what a change like that may do....but its a logical question. If Gardner holds his own at Center...and Pouncey can maul at guard...maybe it does help us. Id rather hear some football reasons why you cant do that...rather then...are you serious...or...ughh as a response.
I think Pouncey is the best centre in the league at pulling, but I don't think he's close to the best. He doesn't have elite strength at the point and cannot get movement against DTs. Also, there have been a lot of blocking assignment breakdowns on this line and as much as that is Turner's fault, you have to wonder how much of it is because Pouncey is not making the right calls. He is the one on the line that is expected to dictate assignments to some extent. Plus, by all accounts, he's a massive *******. So… I wouldn't cry if they moved him to LG or to another team.
It's not really a good fit for the Dolphins so much right now, but I'm not sure what's to figure out. It's a basic element of football.
Tyson Clabo has quietly been playing at least solidly since he was benched, I'm not sure moving Garner out would make sense at this point.
Since his return from being benched PFF has him graded out positively on all 3 games, whereby beforehand he only measured in the black once, and barely at that (+0.2).
Where did I say he was bad at guard? I said he was a better center than guard. There is a difference. Garner is a worse center than Pouncey (in my opinion), so vacating Pouncey from center to guard (a position he isn't as strong at) to please Garner, who is a better center than guard (but not as good as Pouncey), seems counterproductive to me. Garner has been solid for us. He is a utility linemen. Those are important. But I don't see any reason to pull Pouncey from what he does best over one decent start against a Chargers defensive line that, quite frankly, isn't terribly good. Seems a bit...over the top.
My original response of “Ugh…” was b/c I thought he was saying to keep Gardner as our Center and to TRADE Pouncey.
I'd like to see how Garner performs against a better defensive front before drawing any conclusions on his ability as a center.
I disagree. It would fix a problem, but you still have bigger question marks for the future at LT, RT and LG, all arguably more important positions on the line.
